  • Was so excited to return to the awesome new band "The Smile" which consists of two of the Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood' with their good friend Tom Skinner. Having checked out their debut "A light for attracting attention" earlier this year I knew it was only a matter of time before I go to their sophomore project "Wall of Eyes" Join me this week as I dive back into the wonderful sound of "The Smile"
My name is Jack and I love music, in particular Hip Hop, I decided to make this channel as a way to engage with other music lovers and because there doesn't seem to be a lot of reaction channels on TH-cam...My goal has always been to be open to all types of music regardless of my love of Hip Hop, on this channel you can expect a rich array of genres. Bending Hectic is such an amazing track. It's about keeping on going with life despite your troubles. The song paints a scene of driving through a treacherous mountainside road, and coming up to a bend that faces a sheer drop. Then he thinks of letting go of the wheel and he can already imagine what comes next.
"The ground is coming for me now", even saying goodbyes "If you got something to say, say it now". And he seems so sure about it, "No ones gonna bring me down, no way no how". But then he wakes up
"Despite these slings, despite these arrows, I'll force myself to turn", referencing Shakespeare's "To be, or not to be" soliloquy which revolves around the question of ending one's life.
Thom's answer is to be. Force yourself to turn the driving wheel, instead of letting it go and letting death take you. It's a great message of staying alive because it's the only thing you can control. Your own car. Your own life.
And the instrumentation is just 10/10. Peak Thom and Jonny, and Tom Skinner with the rhythms. When Thom refrains "Tuuurrrrrrnnnnnnnnn", the guitar bends a note that feels like it's made of railroad tracks. It's so heavy and thick but it bends to the right note in the end. I see it as the song telling us it's not just a benign message of "Just be alive", it acknowledges that life is hard and it's heavy by making that note bend so slowly and so heavily, but you'll make it in the end.
God what a song. Definitely a 10/10 in a long line of 10/10s in Thom and Jonny's discography.

Hence forth, I don't think a Radiohead or Smile project doesn't feel complete until we've had your reaction (no pressure bro). This album seemed like a significant evolution, but if this is a RH adjacent project that shouldn't be any surprise. New producer, Nigel Godrich who is RH's producer and did do all of Thom's side projects in the past and the first Smile album, took off this one for a new guy with a limited track record, but it definitely worked. Thom and Jonny are on a song writing blitz - their musical minds are on fire, as they keep releasing new songs during the current Smile tour. Of course we hope they are also pocketing some of the best for Radiohead LP10, which I still believe in. Jonny is one of Hollywood's most sought after movie composers, his work on "There Will Be Blood" alone - legendary is an understatement. And now Thom did his 2nd score for a film - so they're musical prowess just grows and grows. These songs to me are more cerebral and visceral and require multiple listens - more experimental, but this is a fantastic follow-up, new sound palette and song structures, clearly more comfortable in going to new places together. Always great to hang with you for an album listen, I'm glad this brought you some soothing and peace, and your sharing it does the same for your fans. Peace as always/

I really want to see someone react to Moon Pix by Cat power. it's right up there with the most beautiful and sad music I have ever heard, like Sea Change and A moon shaped pool or kid A, it's so incredibly good and underrated. It's weird how Moon Pix has a lot of critical acclaim but there are no reactions on TH-cam that I have seen.

Another great album by The Smile. Really think Thom and Jonny are composing some of the best stuff they’ve written. Really enjoy the approach to how they’re crafting songs in this period of their career. From the snippets I’ve heard of the new songs they’re playing on tour the next Smile album will just be as great.

Thanks for your reaction, Jack. This was my 2nd listen to this cd, and I'm appreciative of your input. I've been a Radiohead fan since Pablo Honey, and really enjoy/appreciate all of your reactions. I can't express in words how happy The Smile's music makes me at this point in time. Thom Yorke's voice is like a snuggly, comfy blanket that I snuggle in whenever possible, and Radiohead has been the soundtrack to my life so far. I miss them in their original lineup glory, but The Smile is an excellent placebo. Love Thom's vocals, and have even listened to his solo stuff, occasionally.

Thanks for another great reaction! This is the most prog-rock/psychedelic thing they’ve done I think, with the multiple movements, genre hopping and arrangements in a single song. Not really a reaction suggestion, but I recommend you listen to Jonny’s collaboration with Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur and the Indian ensemble Rajasthan Express. Check out the title track Junun first (play it loud) to get a feel for the music. I think you’ll appreciate it a lot.

Was waiting for this since the album came out! I preordered it and instantly loved it. It’s been a pleasure finding your channel in the past year and a half, hope everything’s been doing fine man. Anticipating Animals by Pink Floyd, maybe also Meddle. Also consider trying out Godspeed You! Black Emperor, got into them recently and they’ve completely blown me away. Start with lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven, then do f#a#inf, slow riot, and yanqui, all of their stuff is great. Also found Soundgarden and have loved them too, I highly recommend Superunknown. Anyways, I appreciate the videos, have a great rest of your day Jack :)

You should still consider Sigur Ros. A band that contains many of the elements you enjoy most from Radiohead/The Smile. So inspired by each other, Radiohead had Sigur Ros open 10 shows during their famous (and insane!) Kid A tour.
The album to start with: Ágætis Byrjun. Let their music wash over you.
