      Agreed - Sarah was brilliant in this role and in delivering this amazing speech. Joss said in the commentary that the speech was actually much longer when they taped it but they had to trim some of it out of the aired episode as the show was running long, yet despite the considerable length of the speech Sarah did it absolutely perfectly in one single take. Afterwards the entire cast & crew gave her a well-deserved ovation.

      It was and continues to be an amazing show imo (I rewatch episodes pretty often). I hope the reboot keeps up the relationship building between the main characters as a main aspect of the entire show - the way the original did it was perfect imo!

    When all the potentials became slayers, that awakening is the most intense, the most beautiful scene of the show. It is truly beautiful. I choose to believe that this speech is for all of us, we all have power, we all can stand up for ourselves, we are all our own heroes, this is why BTVS will always be a masterpiece to my generation, it was the very first show (if not the only one back in the day) that taught us girls that we can be whatever the hell we want to be

    • @sandiego2380
      @sandiego2380 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      'that taught us girls we can be the hell we want' o p fricken lease!
      watch 1:55 and wait until you realize this 'girl' is not competing against sexist boys or men or defending herself. She is competing against other girls who are less fortunate than her because she for reasons got blessed with super powers and they didn't. So much for empowering girls, all I see is giving one girl an unfair advantage and crushing other girls' dreams, so in other words you are only a special 'girl' if you are lucky to get the power. Like Anya stated, Buffy isn't better than the rest, (girls), she is just lucky
      why do you have to specifically limit Buffy's speech to 'girls'? Just because the slayer happens to be female? there are also boys in this scene, and Buffy is also talking to them, not just girls. And the show is also loved and watched by boys who can just as much be inspired to be whoever they want.
      That said, women always whine that boys always get to shine and be encouraged to do whatever they want, name one show that specifically says boys can be whatever they want because they're boys. There are no shows!
      I'm a boy and I have never had any show that specifically taught me I can become whatever I want because I was born a boy. Stop acting like we still live in the stone ages.
      That said, you have had plenty of shows, movies by that point that already showed strong girl characters and teaching girls they can become what ever they want. En0ugh with pitying girls already!

      @StoicWomenEmpowered 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sandiego2380Your manner of thinking is truly inspiring. You're correct that the message is inspiring for both women and men. I don't know your age, and I wouldn't want you to take this as belittling, but just 20 years ago, women didn't have the same rights as men. That period was actually a turning point for women worldwide, awakening them after years of being belittled and humiliated by the male gender, with exceptions, of course. Did you know that in the 1950s, it was nearly impossible for a woman to attend college, and even if they did, they couldn't get a job afterward? A hundred years ago, it was unthinkable for a woman to even go to school. Thanks to remarkable women like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, women's rights began to change from the 1980s onwards. Thanks to her, today over 30% of women hold high positions as managers, CEOs, or entrepreneurs. I won't delve too deeply into history, but for us young women of that time, that speech was truly inspiring because it gave us the strength to see ourselves as significant, not just under the foot of a man. I didn't suffer in the same way as many women before me, but I grew up learning history, and all those women before me made it possible for me to breathe and be free. Perhaps you're right that we shouldn't pity ourselves, but it will take quite some time before we truly achieve equality because generations that remember what it was like before and those currently alive still hold opposing views. You truly are inspiring. It's so heartening to see a man inspired by the words of a woman and advocating for equality. Thank you for that.❤❤❤❤

      I dislike this speech for the reason that they had to make it into a making girls victims men sexist with the crap of 'a bunch of sexist men decided to make a girl the slayer'.
      No one asked for this, why make the men the devils and the poor girls who were chosen, the victims?
      I dislike ' 1:55 and wait until you realize this 'girl' is not competing against sexist boys or men or defending herself. I dislike that this is not empowering women and teaching girls they can be whatever they want but that it actually teaches girls you are only special if you happen to be lucky like Buffy. All these girls that we see are all winning with an unfair advantage. What good of a message is that? Why not make these girls become successful by their own strength not by strength that s blessed to them?
      So much for empowering girls, when all i see is quite the opposite.

    As a kid watching this, I loved this speech and this ending. As an adult…not so much. Its still very well written and very well acted. But I’m old enough now and experienced enough now to recognize that this decision, while necessary to win the war, was not an entirely good or fair thing. It had unforeseen consequences, as many of these type of radical changes do. Not everyone with potential reaches it. Not everyone capable of power is capable of controlling it or using it for unselfish purposes. Not everyone who can fight wants or is willing to. Buffy changed these girls lives forever and even though she called it a choice, it wasn’t really. Once the scythe was used, those girls no longer had a choice in whether or not they had that power. Only if and how they would use it. And there was no guarantee those girls would become the chosen one or that they would become the right kind of person for that position of power and responsibility.

      That's why in Angel season 5 (the season runner after the end of Buffy) a Psycho Slayer was tracked down by Missionary Slayers Troupe trained by Buffy. Cause yes, she knew that she awakened a thing for some who may not be ready BUT the BIG CHANGE it's to not being the only one and it's like being a witch and having a coven. And actually the purpose isn't selfish: it's to win the war for the end of the world. If she didn't propose this choice they might be dead and again ... It's a Fantastic Tv show we shouldn't think to much for that and dony compare with real life. What's fictional should rest fictional from my POV 🤗

      this speech also sends a horrible message that nobody seems to realize. first of all the whole 'let's make the men the evil sexist jerks and pity the poor girls' once again making women create a victim mentality, no one asked for this, why once again condenm the men? Second, look at all those girls who felt the sudden slayer strength within them. This is teaching girls that they can only succeed IF they are lucky to be blessed with super strength. Look at the girl at 1:55, she is competing most likely against other girls and go9ing tocrush them because she was blessed with an unfair advantage and they weren't.
      So much for empowering women when all i see is this teaching girls you can't succeed unless you are blessed with outside forces that gain you an advantage.

    I'm glad the camera focused on Kennedy and Rona when Buffy mentioned the people who didn't want her to be the slayer. The two were rude to Buffy and always questioned her authority. None of them deserve that power and their very presence made the show unwatchable. The worst part, in the end Amanda dies and these two haters survive.

    Stranger Things is so Buffy related: with the opening of the upside down, like the Hellmouth, we have to wait for 11 training new potential telepath kids for the battle? Stranger Things 5 could be like Buffy Season 7 with over power budget. But the screen play of Buffy is pure GOLD.

      NekuTheBOOKlocke Actually Sarah Michelle Gellar didnt want to play Buffy anymore. They left the end of season seven the way it is, to keep their chance on a possible next season, which came in the form of whedons comics.
      So yes, the DID take it off the air, but in agreement with the actors and joss whedon.
      so much for "lol".
      ;)

    • @BooksfromaBiGuy
      @BooksfromaBiGuy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Except it is still an lol, since there was never a chance for another season. I know Sarah wanted to leave, I read the interview where she discussed it in a magazine back in the day. Because of this, everyone decided to end it. Joss had ideas for other stories that yes, did get turned into comics, but those were never plans for a real season 8 on TV once they decided to end the show. Your original post was about it being taken off the air, which it wasn't, everyone ended it because they were ready to end it. So my point still stands. You may be thinking of Angel, which they ended the way they did just in case it was canceled but HOPED it would get another season.

    • @koppsr
      @koppsr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @fianle
      @fianle 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      If Sarah didn't want to play as Buffy anymore that's closer to them ending on their own terms rather than them being taken off the air. Taken off the air generally implies that the network is forcing them to end their show rather than an actor saying they don't want to play as the lead character anymore.
      Those other "lamer" shows run for as long as they do because they bring in enough viewers and the actors are fine with continuing to portray their characters.

    I have to agree with comments about how frustrating and maddening this final season was. After everything Buffy did for these ungrateful terds they turn on her and kick her out of her own house?! Faith especially pissed me off getting on her high horse after all of the misery and pain she caused. Oh...and don't get me started with Giles, Willow, and Xander who were her closest friends. Honestly I didn't care much at all for any of those new characters because they were pretty much a bunch of whiny, selfish, inconsiderate brats. Ironically though I did come to like Spike especially since he was the only one on Buffy's side which is something I thought would never happen.

    • @cmm5542
      @cmm5542 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why does everyone overlook everything Buffy's friends did for HER? Willow, Giles, and Dawn work thankless research jobs day and night so Buffy doesn't have to do that grind. Xander repairs everything for free; saved Buffy's life at least twice; and the world twice single handed (The Zeppo and Dark Willow). Buffy shows them no appreciation or consideration, and won't even delegate responsibilities to them that they are clearly well equipped to share with her and she can't handle alone. She needed to be called out and reminded just how much she needed those friends she had completely disregarded and disrespected in order to win the war.
      It was frankly pretty big of them to still take her back as leader when she didn't even apologize. 'Oh, I didn't stand aside and let you get killed.' 'You deserve to be the leader again!' Thankfully, that's not how the REAL military works. You have to earn your stripes, not claim them as a right. And promotion is given to those who do desk jobs as well as front line, because they are equally necessary and they deserve the same respect.

    • @xyPERSON
      @xyPERSON ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cmm5542 First of all it was never their decision to make whether or not she should lead. Obviously, she was the only one equipped to lead because you see where following Faith got them. Sure her friends did things for her but to blame her for their misfortunes was wrong in every way. Dawn even had the nerve to say it was her house too. Really? Did she pay the bills and mortgage? Keep a roof over their heads? She did not even have to pay rent which is something Buffy should have made her do.

    • @cmm5542
      @cmm5542 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xyPERSON It made no SENSE for Faith's plan to fail and Buffy's to work. In the real world, leaders have to go on evidence and strategy and chain of command and delegation - all of which Faith did RIGHT, and then the writers pull a deus ex machina (which is VERY poor writing) to make sure she fails and Buffy's unsubstantiated gut instinct wins. That is NOT how you run an army or win wars: Buffy's foolhardiness had absolutely NO RIGHT to work except that the Buffyverse can bend logic and reality to make sure she wins every single time. It got old pretty fast.
      Clearly you don't understand inheritance law if you think Dawn should pay rent to live in a house that is half hers. Joyce left it to them both. Even if Dawn is a minor, Buffy has no right to take that away from her. Dawn was brilliant to remind Buffy that no, not everything in the world is hers just because she's the Slayer. Other people own things and have rights to be considered and are not just Buffy's minions to do and die whenever she tells them to. If she wants to lead, she is obligated to consider her followers' welfare. It's military obligation.
      And they are still living in a democracy. Was Joss Whedon trying to tell us that his idea of 'goodness' is dictatorship and not democratic values? True leaders do NOT decide for themselves that they get power. Whoever's decision it is to make, it is certainly not Buffy's. 'If you thought you were ready for the power, that would prove you had no right to it'. Leaders are voted for or appointed or otherwise chosen by their followers. People who grab power for themselves, regardless of their motives, are tyrants. It's a fact of history. I did not like Buffy in Seasons 6-7 at all.

    • @Talisguy
      @Talisguy 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@cmm5542 We've seen season 6. Frankly, they're not done paying off their karma for their complete failure to help Buffy through her suicidal depression or crippling debt.
      Willow wasn't doing a whole lot of grinding to support her during that particular crisis, while still staying at Buffy's house, eating her food and nearly getting her sister killed. ...Season 6 and 7 are not favourites of mine, because they have two major problems: one, everyone is an asshole (except Tara), and two, character actions feel motivated by the need to create drama or set up story beats, not by what makes sense for that character in the situation in which they find themselves.
      Buffy wasn't proving to be a good commander, I agree - but they jump straight to mutiny without ever bringing up their concerns to her first, that I can remember, and their choice of Faith felt incredibly contrived. Xander has military training and has been a capable commander in the past, Willow usually steps up to lead whenever Buffy is out of commission, Giles is the most experienced person in the room and has the most knowledge of the supernatural and of how to train Slayers, and even Kennedy has basically been working as Buffy's drill sergeant, she knows the Potentials and she'd basically been training for this job for half the season. They all make more sense than Faith from the perspective of the Scoobies, whose character arc was largely out of their sight and who, before going to jail, was a murderer with severe rage and impulse control issues and a total unwillingness to think anything through before she did it. We know from her development on Angel that she's not necessarily a bad choice, and, frankly, I'd pick her over Kennedy, but it's not like *they* really know that yet. She's picked for drama, not because it actually makes sense for these characters to choose her at this point in the story.
