To watch her struggle just to keep food on the table and the bills paid was ridiculous. At the very least her home, food and related bills should have been covered. This is a great speech, which I've watched many, many times, so perhaps its surprising the following has only just occurred to me - If Giles gets a salary (now to be paid retroactively etc etc) for being a watcher, then why can't the Watchers' council also pay the slayer, once she comes of age - it makes more sense of Anya's suggestion in Season 6 that Buffy should charge for slaying... but charge the council!!

That's a huge point that have already (not directly) been addressed throughout the show. The Council doesn't consider the Slayer as a human being, but as a tool. Buffy needs a salary in season 6 so that she can maintain her family and friends, but according to the Council, she is not supposed to have either since she is NOT a human being. They pay a watcher enough so that they can live and maintain a slayer, but not a slayer's family. Paying Buffy would contradict all their philosophy, so they don't.

That may have been Giles and Buffy’s dynamic but that’s part of the reason she lasted so long. She had someone who cared about her on her side. However in season 3, after Buffy finishes the challenge after she turns 18, The watchers council removes Giles as her watcher bc they claimed “his relationship with her was no use to the cause”
And I’m using the term “power” in a mystical sense not a theoretical one. Buffy has the slayer powers, the watchers do not. That was my point.

This is basically the relationship between the Dragonborn and the Blades in Skyrim as well. The Blades exist to serve the Dragonborn, not the order way around. Frankly they are more obstacle in the game and yet they think they order him around. He can honestly kill them all and still do what he is destiny to do.
The difference is that the Dragonborn created the Blades, while the Watcher Councils are the follow up to the mages that created the Slayer lineage, so the Watchers feel they are entitled to the control.

RIP to the whole Watcher’s Council and Anya ❤️. This moment in the show truly shows Buffy’s coming of age and power. When we first met the Council, she was so afraid of them (unlike Faith). She went through so many of their archaic, animalistic tests, and even allowed them to replace Giles with Wesley. The moment she “graduated” from the council showed true maturity from her at 18. Then, a couple of years later, watching her be mature enough to work side by side with them and put aside their past high school drama, just shows why Buffy will always be the best slayer.

Actually I had a situation like that in my group of friends. My ex was part of it. I felt bad when we broke up and tried to include him. He started making me chase after him for including him. Well.. I realized that group of people is in fact loyal to me personally. And I watched this scene realizing... Me chasing him is stupid. I am with the people around me. He is on his own. Now months later he is trying to sneak back in and knows the way is through me and another friend... Loyalty is power as well. And I have power. It happened to the point that his and my common friend came to me asking whether it was okay to let him back in... Crazy how the tables turned just by me realizing that he was the one who was responsible. And it is crazy how Buffy helped me to realize that.

The eerie thing about this speech is that The First Evil reflects it in Season 7 when it says "It's about power." It's no coincidence either. Whenever The First gets to that part of it speech when talking to Spike at the end of 7x01, it takes the appearance of Buffy, and this exact same appearance too, minus the coat. The same hairstyle and the all-black clothes. It takes this entire speech and turns it on its head for its own purposes.

Quentin is very hard to read since he is portrayed as the stereotypical old school british Gentleman who'd never lose countenance and always keep up that stoic expression. The fact that he DOES show some emotion in his body language is a sign that Buffy deeply impressed him. I think two interpretations are possible. Either he realizes he is beaten and he has to accept her terms or the watcher's council would simply be out of the game or he was indeed the one among the watcher's council who was very aware of all the facts that Buffy voiced and he secretly tested her by waiting if she would see through this and play her card in a sensible way, like she did or if she wouldn't realize her position of power and submit to them.

    • @chrisrudolf9839
      @chrisrudolf9839 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I think Quentin might have anticipated that she would recognize her position of power and deal with it like this, in which case she actually passed his test by declining to be tested (although they certainly still would have used her if she had submitted to them). But it's quite clear from the reactions of some of the others that they weren't all in on this.

All that bravery, the epic of this scene and the confidence she displays got ruined in the end by one sentence:
    *"She is a god"*

I think we are all agree this is a turning point for Buffy in terms of being completely in charge in her position as slayer, leader and woman ( the council always used her)
    I absolutely love season 5.

ditch the woman part. This is not about her being 'woman' This is about her being 'leader'.

Major Buffy fan here. I'm sorry to say that season 5 was when I started to lose interest. Buffy being so irritated all the time with Dawn bugged me even though it was totally realistic. I watched it again about 5 years back and liked it much better the second (or third - not sure) time. This episode, however, was one of those that is so true and authentic. This is the kind of stuff that made Buffy such a fantastic show. I wasn't a big fan of season 6 except for the dark Willow part, and even season 7 seemed to be a bit one noted at times, but the finale was so well done, just epic. It's been 17 years since Buffy concluded, and it is still my favorite show. Perfect? no, but still easily my favorite.
Favorite recurring event? Every time they realize what is happening, and it's totally off the wall, something no one would ever imagine - and Giles exclaims, "of course!!!" like he should have known all along.
oh - and almost everything Anya said. ("Willow's a demon!?")
Charisma Carptenter was so great, and I was sad when she went to Angel, but then Emma Caulfield was a total riot!
All the comments about Sarah and Emmys - I totally agree, but not just her. They were all great. Together they were bottled lightning.

Moments like this are what make a show worth watching, yes the action scenes are cool but when the characters can be human is where they shine the best.

UGH I freakin LOVE HER!!!!!! Buffy is flawed and she knows it but she also knows her worth and this right here was such a great example of that. Like someone said, in this #MeToo era where women are speaking up about abuse and mistreatment, here Buffy was almost 20 years ago knowing her worth and standing up for herself because The Watchers Council is nothing without her just like this world would be nothing without women. Any and every industry that includes women would be nothing without them in whatever role they play in it and they should be treated fairly.

I love the irony of this scene.
"I have power... they don't..." etc., as though that implies that 'they' are being petty, or fearful, or manipulative, trying to confine her from embracing that power. They covet and fear her power, right? They fear it because they can't understand it, can't control it other than through such manipulation and undermining of her belief in herself and her own ability to wield such power wisely. But they have no right to, etc., because after all, she was born with this power; it's part of who she is...
Sounds... kinda like how feminists talk about men, and all the power that men have. What if... men turned around and said these exacts words and their sentiments to feminists? What if men pointed out that women (or at least the f-words) fear and covet the power of men, which of course they are born with, and seek to try and take it away. They fear men because they can't control men without such manipulation and undermining of their self-belief; instead they teach men to relinquish their power, and instead hand it over to women for safekeeping. But, they have no right to, because men were born being bigger and stronger, and more powerful...
      Yeah. That's right.
So if Buffy can tell these guys to fuck off, so too can men tell feminists to fuck off.
      Thanks Whedon. :)

Oh, and btw? Men managed to build the world quite fine by themselves before they started sharing that role with women. It's more that the world would be nothing without men. You should start respecting them.

Lets not argue. Real feminism is about men and women working together. Current gender wars are not real feminism. And this speech... doesn't have to be about ''feminism'', it's about personal empowerement. I think it is a more of a win in a fight between an individual and authority institution.
You Americans twist everything around and fret over nothing. Chill

@@Lodatzor How about mutual respect? Radical feminism has nothing to do with real feminism, which is fight for equal rights. I agree women should respect men but men also should respect women and not feel threatened by them. You have a point but you also seem.... angry little boy. I understand American culture is different but where I live men and women can work together and respect each other, no gender wars here.
