The 612GW films a little better in the day but in the dark, it's pretty bad. In addition, I noticed a Jello effect when stopped, engine running, it's quite problematic (mounting with suction cup) because the camera is quite heavy. Nevertheless, the menu is intuitive.

I'm surprised that recording cameras are not standard or even an option on new cars. I know they can be a doubled edge sword but I think overall they would/do improve road safety.

I have the Nextbase 512GW so it was interesting to see the new generation from Nextbase. I wouldn't be without a dashcam, not that I have ever needed the video (touch wood). The fact that the video can be used against you is a *good reminder to drive legally, considerately and well at all times* . It's like having your own *witness and conscience* always travel with you. All the best from Switzerland, Rob PS. Swiss law is different and is actually not very Dashcam-friendly.

Is the 512gw, the last gen to this model.
Is it considerable better in going for this 522gw over the 512gw. Thank you.

@@tunosimon1981 Hi - The user interface is visually a lot nicer on the 522GW than the 512GW and also seems to be more user-friendly (easier to use). It also has a lot more features. The price is quite similar to the original price of the 512GW. *The biggest improvement is in the way it attaches to the windscreen* The 512GW wobbles more than I would expect the 522GW to. I am not happy with the 512GW method of attaching to the windscreen. I think the 522GW looks much better in this respect. The video quality is hard to judge on TH-cam because TH-cam resamples the video. I would say it is the same quality. I hope this was helpful.

@@RobWhittlestone Thank you. I recently bought the 512gw for around 125. But din't use it yet. Wondering whether to go for the 522gw one, as there is an offer going on for slightly more, but including the rear window dashcam as well.

Echoing the glowing reviews already coming in for this latest content branch, tip top tastic. Jam packed with info (even went into the legal side) and all within an approx 5 minute video. Nothing worse when looking through reviews than seeing a search result of dozens of 20 minute reviews. More please.

If you find the sample footage presented looks like crap - check your TH-cam resolution setting. Mine defaulted at 480P - after setting it to 1080P a lot of details appeared.

I know this is a year old. But just got one on reviews I’ve watched. I like the way it mounts magnetically, easily removed. Issues- using live view- either have to turn phone to Aeroplane Mode or mobile data off. Problem with this is cannot make calls or use Alexa. Then when downloading videos to phone unable. I am returning today.

Hi Bob nice review thanks. I have to differ though on your comment not bothering with Parking mode. My car was hit recently in a car park and the person did not stop and leave any details, no surprises there. I have a Nextbase 512GW the predecessor to this one. It did not capture anything leaving me to pay my £250 excess. Having spoken to Nextbase to get advice on future better protecting my car they advised using a hardwire kit (around £30) and setting the dashcam in parking mode. The hardwire kit powers the cam from the vehicle battery so its "G" sensor remains active to protect the car. There is battery (car) protection built in so you dont get a flat battery on your vehicle either.

These are a decent dash cam, I have the older model 422gw the 412gw which is the best I've seen yet, I did have a 612gw but the extra money went into the touch screen and it actually had worse image quality in the dark than the 412gw so I returned it and repurchased the 412gw, the 422 is not as good as the 412, my girlfriend has this model for the last two years, things to look at when buying a dash cam, viewing angle in degrees like 140°,180° etc, also 1080p is no good anymore, you want at least 1440p to be able to read reg plates.

Driving home from work on a dark winter night when I unexpectedly got hit by a stolen VW Golf, which resulted in my car being written off. It was a very easy process for both my insurers and the Police as I had the make, model, number plate and even a description of the occupants from the dash cam.
The stolen car was later found in a back lane with its number plates ripped off. This was pointless as the VIN/Chassis number linked the car to the number plates anyway 🤔😂

I had the previous 512GW and before it was a year old it went back. It kept saving protecting recording on start up, randomly stopped recording etc. Drove me mad.
Now got to find a replacement and I'm still leaning towards this new 522GW for the fact that Nextbase make the best cameras.

I've just ordered a collection for my brand new 422 dashcam. The battery won't charge from the mains and it keeps turning itself on and off. I googled it and it's a very common issue with this brand. Maybe it's a great dash cam when it works but there's a ton of faulty ones out there. Be warned.

Hi i have curious questions, the usb lead, is that long enough to go from window to a cigarette adapter thing, for example i have multiple things that plug in, so can this work just plugging into usb in car? And cable long enough? Also do you need an sd card? What is card for? No way i can just sync this to mobile and it records footage and sends to phone with no need for card.

    • @BobFlavinVideo
      @BobFlavinVideo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

There’s no way to sync directly to a phone that I’m aware of but you can get the footage from the device using the app.
The camera won’t record without the SD inserted

I’ve just brought one but am yet to be impressed. When watching playback it doesn’t capture number plates unless your tailgating which obviously you don’t want to do. I will try different 1440to 1080p etc to see if it makes any difference. But if you can’t capture number plates it seems to defeat the object of having one.

1st time I've come across your video , not a bad review tbh. Can I just add that the Achilles heel on nextbase dashcameras is the use of the internal battery that same as a mobile phone battery , it has limited lifespan and after a year or maybe 2 it will be in need of replacement. It's better to buy a capacitor dashcamera , the capacitor cameras last much much longer but work exactly the same way but also work much better in hotter climates as they don't get hot like batteries do. Another point is the parking mode needs a permanent power supply to work not the internal battery on the camera. The internal battery is only there really to shut down the camera properly in the event of a serious crash that cuts all.power and saves the last video file safely. Let's face it you don't want to lose that last file or it get corrupted with faulty internal battery. Personally I use the viofo A129 DUO currently . Thanks for the video , it was a good watch 👍

Very interesting Bob, great have the information regarding the law or at least guidelines on these too as the law can struggle to keep up with the latest trends in technology. My own anecdotal experience with dash cam users is that the those who take tend to take risks on the road in terms of changing lanes without notice etc tend to have a dash cam, but that is not to say that all dash cam users tend to take same said risks.

I see that there is no mention in your review of the non-existent battery life when one of the add-on cameras is plugged in. This makes the parking mode un-useable as you only get two 30 second clips before the battery low indicator comes on and the dashcam turns off.

Would you recommend the Nextgen 522GW or the Blackview DR750s? (Will be buying both front and rear window units in either case)
I’ve seen positive reviews on both, and as you mentioned, all the additional features (like alexa) isn’t going to sell me on it.
    Most concerned with:
    1. Ease of Use (quickly begin recording so I can get on my way)
    2. Accessibility via smart phone (live streaming/cloud storage)
    3. Overall build quality (something that will last a few years)
    4. App UI (device management)
Lastly, the cost is not a concern for me.
Just as long as it checks all the above boxes.

Can you read the number plate oo the cars being filmed? And if so, how low can the light go down to before you cannot read it? Is it good at night?

    Hello Bob,
Thank you for the review. This is yet another review that really seems to be in favour of this dash cam.
I'm having really bad luck with my new car, so need to get a dash cam (or the car will sadly have to go.) My biggest, and honestly, only requirement, is recording when I'm away from the car if/when some b*****d knocks my car. I don't want to rip my new car to pieces, hardwiring one of these things, therefore battery life is hugely important to me.
Which leads to my question: Can you please let me know how good the battery life is on this model, with regards to it starting to record when it detects a knock (from another vehicle) when the engine is off and you are away from the car? More specifically, how long (in days?) would the battery last if you were away from the vehicle? Also, how accurate is the knock detection? Eg when someone parallel parks too close to you, and hits your car?
I have a convertible, so can't have a separate camera on my rear "window," therefore do you think the rear view camera add on would be good enough for protecting the rear of my car? Again, I'm referring to recording knocks when the engine is off and I am away from the car. Or do you think the optional cabin view plug in camera would do a better job of this?
Thanks again for your review, and I'd really, really appreciate your feedback re my queries.
    All the best!

I had mine installed but forgot to ask if I can pop it off when I am parked. It’s really hot where I am especially in the summer. I’m afraid to damage it if I force it.

Is it a battery or a capacitor? What size microssd card does it take. Can it go up to 128 size micro ssd ?

Can i ask how you got the back window to view so clear ? , Was it the placement or just the weather. I see the inside on mine clear but not always clear on back.

Hi Bob, good idea to do reviews of dash cams etc. I've had a few dash cams over the years, starting with very cheap Chinese stuff, I did buy a Ring RBGDC50 dash cam for about €120, the footage quality was shockingly bad & I found the software wasn't very robust & tends to crash on it & the same with the cheap Chinese stuff, which I then needed to re do the setup again, as they usually stop recording as the card would fill up, so re-do loop record, date, time etc. I don't review the footage, only if something happened in front of me, I don't post footage up online either, but I have been asked by Gardai for footage - in relating to a murder case.
