Party anthem? Uh, no. I was in high school when it came out. It's a great song. We all knew that. But it's not a party anthem. It's about numbing the pain of disappointed dreams that probably never could have come true anyway. He can see it, and he knows he's in the same boat with the rest of them. The other piano players shown in the first chorus are smiling, but not him. It's a depressing song, or at least a sobering one. It reminds me of the bar in Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh.
Captain Jack, Innocent Man, You may be right, Billy the Kid....he has a bunch of them. Please don't base your opinion off his tunes when he was married to Christie Brinkley....they were fluff and very disappointing to me.
