    If you want to skip most of the install stuff and just get an overview, jump to 38:23.
    Note: Whilst it says "Includes Paid Promotion" at the start of the video - I haven't been paid - the screen was sent to me for free though.

      Sigh, YT rules that don't apply to UK peeps getting enforced I guess. YT should have to put "This video was heavily funded to appear on the suggested videos" on their stuff too C***s.

      I have just installed the same mod and I keep getting problems with mine turning on the first time. I've been using quality batteries but I have to turn my gameboy on and off like three times before it stays on. It's a weird issue as this only happens when it has been turned off for an extended period of time. I wonder if anyone else has been having this same issue?

    would be worth doing if they made the screen larger so it fits properly . . . . . . .

    It'd be nice to cover the LCD silver frame with black tape. Black kapton tape would be good. Or a front bezel with a fitted black border. Otherwise awesome!

      Or a different bezel

    I have a McWill LCD for one of my Atari Lynx that will be added this summer. Regarding these McWill modifications? Simply incredible. The research, engineering and work involved vs. the little to any revenue McWill earns? Let me just formally thank McWill for his talent, passion and support to these extinct vintage handhelds.

  • @WaltonPete

    Looks like a lovely LCD with great colour saturation but I'd definitely put a strip of black tape down either side of the silver bezel to disguise it.

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, yes, I did think about that but since its totally straight it doesn't bother me. If anything it makes it easy to notice it has a different screen.

    Top video Chris, the LCD screen looks great. I'm sure McWill could have new bezels made to go with the screen to hide the fact it's slightly smaller in size, I don't own a game boy colour but I may have to pick one up now.

    What a difference! I'm still holding out for a screen replacement for my PSP1003. I think I've mentioned before how I hate the ghosting on the original PSP screen.

  • @DaveDoc1984
    @DaveDoc1984 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The only additional thing I would do (because seeing the silver bezel of the screen would get to me) is use some black insulation tape to cover the silver bezel pieces that you can see. That way it will blend into the rest of the screen and wont look obvious that the screen is slightly smaller than the original.

    I like BennVenn's version more. For roughly the same price, you can buy a kit that doesn't require any soldering whatsoever, thus making it stupidly easier (or at the very least more convenient) for the average person that doesn't do this for a job or a hobby and as such doesn't need to buy a soldering iron that may be used once and never again. Oh, and he's also testing a variant that fits in a GBP aswell as possibly a DMG GB.

    Awesome! If there's a revised version that is the correct size, where the casing isn't showing through, and where the picture is the same size as the original screen, then this is definitely something i'll jump on!
    Unfortunately, like it is now, i don't think i would want it though, the fact that the image is smaller, and that the casing is showing through, just rubs me the wrong way, it doesn't look quite right. I'm hoping for a revised version soon!

    Samsung makes a very slick mini-vga port for their old laptops, but idk where to even begin finding the ports/components for installing one myself.
    What'd be really slick is a way of routing one of the pins to the switch, so that when you plug it in, it auto-switches.

    Now this is right up my street.i have a clear GBC that I would love to do. I'll press play now and watch away. Also, could you not take vcc from the led leg to save trying to solder to the tiny cap? Could you not also neatly put black tape on the left/right side of the screen to hide the chrome screen surround. Another question, lol. What is the crystal used for, does it need it?

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would need to check that the LED is fed with 5v - it probably goes through a resistor to drop it, so I wouldn't take 5v from there. You could put tape down the sides of the screen there - I considered that but was happy as it is tbh. The crystal provides a clock to the CPLD / FPGA, so it is required!

  • @SkyCharger001

    A. Why not replace the IR-port with a VGA-connector?
    B. How about using a closed-circuit-detector as switch? (just plug in the cable to switch to VGA)

  • @loganjorgensen
    @loganjorgensen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Tricky to find one that fits the size, I think a little black Sharpie on the silver would obscure the trim some. Always bugged me how it's 160x144, why not just do 160x160? ^_^

  • @coderkind
    @coderkind 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Maybe a Mini-VGA connector to replace the infrared module at the top? I’m not sure what games might use that, though.
    There’s been rapid progress by numerous folk in a short period with GBC backlight solutions; I’m still hoping someone finds a larger display however, as the GBC’s screen is already smaller than its cousins anyway (DMG, GBP).

    I personally dont like the mcphill. Lots of backflips just to make it work. And as for the freckle shack there's no telling when the hell they will be shipping. I bought a midwest embedded and it's really easy and straightforward

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen how the midwest embedded screen is fitted and it's not easier at all imo. You have to cut the plastic again and trim bits down, then attach wires, and if you chose to add the brightness control via the buttons you have wires there too. It also uses exactly the same LCD display with the same metal bits showing (unless you replace the front bezel), and in the videos I've seen the screen is not centralised, ie. the few videos I've seen you see more of the silver left hand side than the right hand side. Might be a bit easier for some to install, but I am not convinced on that one!

      @GadgetUK164  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This can happen! The same thing happens with the GameGear, but often its only when used in conjuction with an Everdrive. I believe it's due to inrush current and the fact the capacitor on the main power input not having enough charge. A quick switch off and back on should resolve it. I will test my Gameboy Colour out with the everdrive more later to see if I can re-create the same behaviour.

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, try finding a screen that is precisely the size of the original one - they don't exist! You either have to go larger or smaller. Personally I think the only things that could make this perfect is to somehow mount the crystal on the PCB, alter the PCB layout so no cuts of the plastic are required. That said, it has been reported (by other reviewers) that it is brighter and clearer than the AGS-101 screen mod you can do to these. Furthermore, the screen from Benn Venn apparently is exactly the same! The only difference is a custom bezel to hide the silver bits. So what is the better option then?
