This is serious alpine terrain, with inherent hazards, including possible crevasses, rockfall, and icy conditions. Add weather that deteriorates in moments, altitude and dicey routefinding through the Labyrinth when foggy, and a guide is an excellent idea. I've been on Orizaba, and was very happy to have an expert on hand to tell me I was experiencing the first symptoms of AMS. We turned back from the summit and I made it home alive- some people don't.
