KAWS talks about his journey to becoming one of the art world's biggest names, the lessons he learned along the way, and how to disrupt conventional thinking.
KAWS knows how to become people's favorite artist, and in this KAWS documentary we break down the biggest lessons you can take from Brian Donnelly, a.k.a., KAWS.
    -
Artist and designer Brian Donnelly, who goes by the moniker Kaws, has become a household name in the art world. Some of the figurative characters and motifs in his work date back to the early years of his career in the 1990s, when he was still painting in 2D before moving on to 3D. He's done collaborations with brands such as DIOR, Nike, Supreme, COMME des GARÇONS, A BATHING APE®, MTV and more. He's also tapped into the world of pop culture and music with his incredible collaborations with icons such as Pharrell and Kid Cudi.

Sometimes we can put unwanted barriers on ourselves, why limit yourself to making small figurines, when making a large one is the same exact thing but it’s just a different perspective or using a different material, or using that broken piece of furniture to create something. The word creativity is being able to find a link between things, and to be considered smart is to find a way to make others perceive it

Man this dudes whole style comes from graffiti art. Not sure I like him saying he never considered himself a graffiti artist. Give the genre credit because you wouldn’t have a style without it. He used bomb trucks, trains, and buildings. Yes, he was/is a graffiti artist.

Somehow I think most artists are like this guy. What I've noticed from him though is that his art is branded with a combination of any of the features found in his models. Especially the eyes xx. He's differentiated himself, and has good connections.

Maybe but the audience often dictates what the artist makes, they expect a certain style and when an artist strays from that it's often poorly received so sticking to the same tried and true thing is usually the way to success.

I am not hating guys but rappers made him famous, connections and the fact that he was living in New York. But as a pure artist, he didn't bring anything innovative to the table, meaning copying forms and images that have been already established decades before by Disney or other artists, I mean come on...putting "XX" on their eyes and boom, what a great piece of art. :/

While I appreciate the idea of never limiting yourself to a single label and being multidisciplinary, Kaws is a pretty goofy example. His whole thing is making extremely shallow "art" without even an attempt at any sort of deeper meaning. His art is commericialized, meaningless, imo pretty ugly, and exists purely to provide rich people another way to flex their wealth. And my god that sponser, no self respecting art youtube channel would accept a sponsership from Masterworks. My god "blue chip art", that's the worst thing I've ever heard. I guess I can't really hate though, everyone's gotta eat ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
