In this episode of _IN PROCESS, we’ve ripped off KAWS.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve been faking that Brian Donnelly reached out to us for a collaboration. We made a graphic t-shirt that resembled his aesthetic. We wanted to look like we were coming up hard in the art/streetwear world. We put it in the UNIQLO store to make it seem real. We even made a fake HYPEBEAST article and promoted it on Instagram. Why did we do this?
Because KAWS already did this in his own way. Ripping off the works of Disney, placing his work in existing advertisements, you name it. KAWS didn’t wait for permission to put his name out there… he just went for it.
And now it’s our turn. We HAD to go for it, because we didn’t have a choice. The Push Product channel was slowly dying. We saw a major decline in audience engagement. It was a painful turning point in our journey- it was time to take a risk.
And now we want you, our audience, to take a risk. Just like KAWS did to start off his career. For the past few weeks, we’ve been living like KAWS, and we’ve seen a boost in activity. We’ve made sales off the merchandise we put out, and an increase in followers. We have no idea what’s around the next corner… but we’re willing to make the leap. Wherever we go from here, we will get there through creativity.
That’s what it means to Push Product.

he didnt sell it. He was commissioned by NIGO (creator of BAPE) in 2002 to make a painting. KAWS did it, and NIGO put the item with some other paintings/vinyls for auction.

You should do a deeper analysis into the mans history and his extensive body of work to understand why he is who he is.

Your video explains KAWS concept of Original Fake pretty accurately... but your delivery of KAWS concept onto your Push Products completely missed the mark/concept. KAWS rehashed old pop cultural icons to into new with his trademark illustrations, Push didn't rehash KAWS illustrations into your own PUSH style, you added a logo and that's like copying someone else's signature to make it look like yours.

there's a fundamental difference between what you guys have done and kaws' "design philosophy". APPROPRIATION =/= PLAGIARISM.
True kaws changed the billboards and ads with his own art but it was still his original unique style. They ripped off kaws style and added to their own logo. But kaws was pretty much plagiarising those toys he made, the Snoopy one was literally just Snoopy with x glasses

...you're comparing two different processes. risk? kaws builds his signature onto famous iconic images and he puts at least some creativity by working his style onto modern day icons and works that play and send messages about society. appropriation in art has been used in post modern work for a long time in order to be provocative and set statements. you've literally taken his signature and just put it onto your logo. not the same thing. people will see 'your' shirt and associate it with KAWS. so really, you guys are the only ones ripping off here. in the end, the message you're trying to convey is that people will apparently buy it anyway since you've copied his iconic imagery and instead the $$ goes into your pockets. no creativity.

Kaws has legit permission from all these other companies to use their imagery in his art and everyone profits from the sales, he worked as an illustrator for a number of famous cartoons. He has developed clout. All you did was take his art and slapped it around your brand...so who’s getting ripped off 🤔🤔🤔🤔

@@insanedb 🤣 crossed eyes and crossbones have been branded in many different brands for ages. Each one unique in style which is what Kaws did. He created his own version of a crossbone skull but this is straight up ripping off Kaws by putting his crossbones on products to make it look like he collaborated. Another example of another artist making his own version of something is takashi murakami, anyone notice his flowers look like the baby first flower on tv? Just changed the eyes and mouth and he made his own version of it.

I think this is actually a really good practical example of some historical art interpretations such as marcel duchamps original urinal then the copying of it afterwards, I think art theory tells us that taking a risk in art and breaking boundaries is artistic process and this example was a great modernisation of that. I want a shirt now, even knowing it's fake, after watching this as it could be a little piece of history! When they talk about Kaws there might be huge discussions about the interpretation of his work and artists who did. I also appreciate that this was done in a time were property outweighs artistic growth and profit is the primary interest.
the reason why profit is the primary interest over "artistic growth" is because of content like this. this isn't an interpretation of his work. what has been interpreted? both his illustration AND style has been simply taken and put with their logo - there is no personality from them. there is a conceptual and fundamental difference between what marcel duchamp did and what this video aims to do. marcel duchamp was challenging social ideas and took risks because he wanted to make fun of traditionalist art - he made that his defining signature. kaws did his own when he played with advertisements. push product is poor, needed money and decided to take advantage of kaws' work to get more subscribers. they do not have any creativity.
