One of the comments at first said “He is weird” I mean, if him being unique and standing out is weird, so be it. Those hate comments came from envious minds tbh. One of the best compliments I have gotten in my life as a fashion stylist is “your style is weird and different”. I love that.
Not necessarily from envious mind in my opinion. “Weird” can just mean different, not necessarily a bad thing. The irony is people can actually be attracted to weirdness.

Thank you for this video, I will say as a black artist in the industry it was really concerning seeing a minstrel looking painting sell for so much, especially as an artist descending from chattel slavery, and I definitely casted quite a few judgements on his work. This video definitely cleared up some misconceptions. Im happy he acknowledges his privilege and access. As a artist who doesn’t have that privilege it’s very different for us, and the world is advertising his sale as a big achievement for black artists, when the more I read and see of him it feels more like a win for him as a individual. I respect this video for sure. His scale of work is definitely impressive. I will be honest and say that his work definitely encourage me to work harder, to widen the perception of black people in art, with contradicting imagery. I hope as his art evolves his perception of his own blackness in relativity to the world, does as well.
Being creatively free and confident to just make is a quality that children have that adults have lost. I had it and lost it, and now I’m trying desperately to get to it back. That process becomes cluttered with training that progresses you technically but also limits you in that it puts constraints on you. It gives you an objective ‘this is right’ and ‘this is wrong’ or at least it does within it’s own definition of what is correct, it’s up to the person to decide if that definition is applicable to them; and I think too many people (myself included) accept those limiting beliefs as fact way too easily.
