Her questions are so thoughtful and thought-provoking. Really appreciated that. Looked up this interviewer and saw she is a historian and author. Ahhh...that explains it. Well done, Annette.
...what an absolute delight to listen to the reality of ‘how to do it’, ‘how it happens’, how brilliance can make or break guidance of talent to excell, and come up with the unexpected - that ‘freedom’ which a great actor always dreams of...BRILLIANT!
Wow, I saw this film and can't believe it's been 8 years since then. What a delight to see this panel interview. Many years ago someone sent me a link to the YTs of Florence Foster Jenkins singing, and of course I was on the floor laughing although I didn't know the story behind her, um, performances, and of her life. This really was wonderful. THANKS!
I enjoyed hearing Meryl Streep's description of the film in the context of "love story": it's not about foppish silliness and vanity so much. I am sold on going to see it. Loved the 92nd St. Y's online interview!
Sadly, it’s also about syphilis she got from her husband. In advanced stages it gives the feeling of grandiosity. She was a prodigy pianist who couldn’t play after an accident.
Ellen, yes! he is an excellent comedian, here overshadowed by other two actors. I just love his voice. About Oscar I'm not sure, it's so political and overrated. Jim Carrey doesn't have one.
rah62tucsonaz you must get annoyed by most of the comments on TH-cam then. I hadn't actually got that far into the recording but I fast- forwarded it to hear the comment.
The moderator was excellent, what are people talking about? Articulate and eloquent and delivers her questions well. She talks a lot but she also puts the panelist at ease.
I was happy when Meryl mentioned she is lucky to have the chance because a lot of actors don't even get the chance because it's so true. It's not just talent that gets you the part, it's also connections or luck or just looking the part the best more than anybody else. And if you're not an American or white it's even harder.
@@brainsareus same. She interviewed meryl before and just says straight to her face “lets talk about She Devil. not a great movie of yours…” and it was so clear meryl was like WTF
This interviewer talks too much. She has 3 eloquent actors who undoubtedly could speak for hours minimally prompted, but it seems she is much too conscious about appearing informed & intelligent. Ironically, she speaks about the director getting out of the way of the performers. She could have taken a hint from that technique.
I felt exactly the same way. I kept wanting her to stop talking so I could hear what they had to say. She appears to be enamored with her own voice. I have zero patience with this.
Yes, and she slobbers all over them like most interviewers. "Remarkable." "Consummate." Sure, Streep is a great actress but the ass kissing is unnecessary and barfworthy.
I see actors actively exhibiting signs of nervousness, constant pulling of clothes, twitches, rubs etc etc etc. These people just really want off this stage.
So nice to see comments which are critical (justifiably, in my view) of the interviewer yet don't descent in to abuse. Hopefully she will have read them and amended her style subsequently.
I don't think that Annette Insdorf is a very good interviewer. She doesn't stop at asking the question: she follows the question with a series of anticipated / suggested answers.
Key to understanding Florence is syphilis she contracted from her husband at very young age. In advanced stages it gives a feeling of grandiosity (can be confused with Narcissistic Personality Disorder according to Sam Vaknin). That's why she hasn’t seen anything wrong with her singing. Also, she was a prodigy piano player, have had sound education in music. Singing and music was more part of life then today. This movie showed nicely atmosphere of appreciation for music, art in her social circles, popularity of amateur theater groups. I was introduced to Florence's singing 20 years ago by music teacher as something laughable for classical music lovers (not like P.D.Q. Bach). 'Love story' was a very good angle here. People around her were polite but also knew her long enough to love and support her. I love scene in the lift when Simon Helberg's character finally laughs. His joy of getting well paid job, and even more relief after witnessing surreal situation. He is an excellent comedian. Because singing, music is so often gone from early stages of our life (first thousand days from conception are crucial) we have so many poor American Idol auditions and people brainwashed into following really bad music. Also, we have an epidemic of narcissistic behaviors. Among Millennials NPD is three times more prevalent. And line between class act and kitsch can be very thin (or blurred by mediocre 'artists'). When music is present at home you may have children like son of composer Rick Beato, boy with perfect pitch or Jackie Evancho, Amira Willhagen, Angelina Jordan. BTW Andrzej Wajda used the same 'technique' with his actors. He has had access to the best one because of his communist connections, allegiance. And they were doing his job, like setting the scenes. He took away stage, limelight, resources, Oscar (see: allegiance) from much more talented people.
An Intelligent delightful interview that I enjoyed very much. Particularly honest about the director and their own reaction to not being over directed and the vulnerability of the actor: waiting for the crushing that is not what I'm after type direction, never coming from the director but still being insecure enough to expect it. To me it shows the real lack of arrogance in this talented trio. A truly delightful film full of warmth and understanding. I am also glad the court scene was taken out. I feel it would have set an unfair premise on Hugh Grants character. Was he wasn't he a gold digger? I might change my mind about that several times but at the end of the day we will never know and I do not personally think worth the distraction from a very well done and extremely enjoyable film. Do not politisise everything. It was wrong to politisise the ending
I get a feeling of Lada GAGA when we talk about FFJ because GAGA is about the outfits and the extraness besides the voice. So Florence was very GAGA. Or GAGA is very Florence what ever.
First of all... Why is the interviewer the only one who has to rise her hand to see? .... And on another subject... Meryl Streep seems to be a very accomplished and modest person. I like her
Okay, further comment: I can’t take any more of this interviewer. These three guests are potentially very interesting but the interviewer is murdering the show. How on earth does she get air time? I’m 60% through and quitting.
Ms Insdorf needs to learn the art of interviewing. Ask your question, then shut up and let the guests answer. She should remember that humans have two ears and only one mouth, they should be used in that order. That lady is far too interested in her own voice. Compare this interview with one hosted by Graham Norton about the same subject and with both Hugh and Meryl.
Ugh, I can't stand Insdorf, she's so full of herself. I hate the way she pretends to ask a question and then either answers it, or pontificates, or lets the guest start to answer the question and *then* goes off on it. Imagine analyzing a movie -- complete with cultural references -- to the three actors who actually starred in it. Cringe-inducing.
I wondered that a woman of such stature (body size) could have such a squeaky voice. A person that has enjoyed such pleasure (food) undoubtedly has the vocal cords relaxing also.
The interviewer could let the actors talk more, she is intelligent and competent, but he ended of knowing more of her views, than the three other persons and I would have wished the opposite. Also too long questions, so sometimes one looses the point.
Does Annette Insdorf cut her own hair? And her dress sense with that puff-sleeve??? What is wrong with the people letting her on stage like that? Isn't there a stylist? Or even a child with common sense to dress her and do something with that footballer-haystack on her head??? Mind you, the greatest Meryl Streep has also not been taken care of very well hair-wise...

Meryl immerse her acting into the persona of the character she was portraying to the extent that one who sees her in that situation cannot identify the real person and the actor!
I agree with the people who say that the interviewer should just shut up and let the guests speak. She also surprised me enormously with a couple of her pronunciations: she has obviously gone to a great deal of trouble to make her speech sound educated, to the verge of preciousness, and yet she says “singer” with a hard “g”; and as, I assume a film critic, she really ought to know that “Laundrette” has only two syllables.
The interviewer was born in France to Polish Holocaust survivors. Think of being raised by Eastern European Jews in New York and reconsider your comment. And, BWI, this interviewer is a professor of film at Columbia. She IS intelligent and educated.
MrMaxxRo -> That's probably true today because the nurturing of art is done in places like NYC and LA/SF which are also centers of Leftism. From the 20s through the 60s there were many conservative artists in LA. Many would say that the Left is destroying the arts. The art center in LA has a huge sculpture of a dog peeing on the art building which says a lot about the art within. Many artists that don't conform to the Leftist orthodoxy are ostracized. This will change because the Left ultimately "eats its own" - they battle each other for dominance and they end up giving awards to each other for crap. It's the history of the Left.
Lovely discussion, except for the last moments when politics put a bad taste in my mouth. I wish that these incredible actors could realize that Hillary Clinton is the Florence Foster Jenkins of our lifetimes.
Streep says you can hear it in her voice the passion???? Jenkins was a joke and she should have never received the attention given to her. Her dad had a lot of money and that’s the only reason she is known today.
How is Hugh Grant not a comedian yet? He's one liner is so perfectly timed and made the audience laugh all the times!!
