Forbidden Starts is a warhammer 40K IP game that takes the Space 4X style and tries to implement just a dash of dice. The core of combat is actually card play and deckbuilding. while the core of the game is action programming .
You're my favorite tabletop channel. Mainly because we have similar wants in games, so I get a fairly accurate guess on if I will like something. Suggestions: Deep Future (Seriously my favorite of these suggestions, the rest in no particular order.) Agent Decker Solo Engine (turns any game solo. Basically AI in card form.) Utopia Engine Herald D-6 Deep Space Tiny Epic Galaxies Adaman Pocket Civ Epic Notebook Solitaire Adventures Jacynth
Thanks Nick, I was massively looking forward to this list and you didn't disappoint. I've got 3 new games to add to the shopping list that i'd never considered. I would love to hear your 10 - 15, or even better 10 - 20, some time.
For me, Mice & Mystics and Mansions of Madness would be in my top 10. I prefer Legendary: Encounters over the Marvel one in both theme and mechanics (the scanning adds to it). I hear X-Com is good too.
Other games I liked for solo are Mistfall, Warhammer Quest Adventure Card Game, and Airborne Commander (WWII solo-only deckbuilder). I really wanted to like Pathfinder Adventure Card Game but the original game felt too random and didn't really feel like a co-op game from what I played. I keep wanting to revisit the newer games since I hear they are better.
Hey Nick, I don't own Pathfinder but I've watched reviews and it looks like you play with fewer locations based on the number of players. To me it seems like you would "cheapening" the experience and not getting the full experience by never using some of those other locations. Can you play solo and still use more locations or would it be too difficult? Or am I wrong in my assumption of the game being a lesser experience by playing with fewer locations?
Hi Nick. Question about Ghost stories. Wat do you think about the first expansion : white moon? is it essential for ghost stories lovers (we usually play it with two players). regards
+Brandon Ledward I think that it is just hard to play casually cause it has so many rules. That is the reason why I wont buy it either. It looks like such an awesome game though.
Mage Knight looks awesome but I know it's a really heavy game. I'm still really new to board games and it sounds really intimidating to dive into that one. I've been trying to use the difficulty ratings on BGG to build to more complex games but I'm not ready to dive into that one yet.
As a new gamer myself, I would love to know, what are some games that you have enjoyed? I'm going very slowly, so, so far the only game I have on this list is Onirim, which I am thoroughly enjoying.
Jumped into modern games with my wife so she's my primary partner but we have crazy schedules and that had me leaning toward games that I can solo. Most co-ops can be played solo. Ghost Stories was a lot of fun and I also enjoyed Apocalypse Chaos both are similar but easy to pick up and both great solo. Pandemic is a great starter game, in order to play solo you need to control multiple characters but is a fun game. Elder Sign is a dice game, really easy and quick to play and a good solo game. Dead Men Tell no Tales I also really liked along with Level 7 Escape. If you have a partner, Mr. Jack is a blast my wife and I both love that one. Forbidding Island is a good one too, easy to learn and cheap. If you try Pandemic and like the mechanics, Defenders of the Realm is a slightly more complicated fantasy version of Pandemic. There are so many great games out there. I've been really enjoying my journey so far. I'm gradually getting into more complicated games. I played Betrayal at the House on the Hill at a friend's house and loved it. Had an amazing time. My wife always wanted board game nights but I got bored with the standard Hasbro/Parker Bros. affairs so it seldom happened. Then I found some of these. I never knew most of these existed and the rabbit hole is deep. It's an easy hobby to get sucked into. Some nights even a solo-board game replaced video games. I've found it so relaxing and exciting to learn something new to try new strategies and play styles. Definitely suggest signing up on the Board Game Geek forums if you haven't yet. Everyone there has been amazing with making great recommendations and even answering questions I've had on the rules for games I've picked up.
Awesome, thanks, cloud2018! I definitely want to try Pandemic. Supposedly, if you buy the In the Lab expansion, it allows you to play solo more easily. I will check some of the others out. Thanks for taking the time to write out such a detailed response. :)
Great list, thanks for posting. Here's what I would have said: 10 - Tiny Epic Defenders 9 - Nations 8 - Samurai Spirit 7 - Space Hulk: Death Angel 6 - Say Bye to the Villains 5 - Carnival Zombie 4 - Race for the Galaxy w/ Gathering Storm 3 - Legendary (Marvel/Alien/Predator) 2 - Shadowrun: Crossfire 1 - Sentinels of the Multiverse
+Joseph Pilarski I started off playing Legendary solo, but I got bored with that and the extra rules. I found that playing two players was more enjoyable as long as you can remember who's turn it is.
How can you watch a movie and play a game at the same time? I've tried it and it doesn't work. Either you end up ruining the movie because you can't follow it, or you end up ruining the game because you lose track of your train of thought. Just put on some music, or simply pause the movie. Multitasking makes you stupid. At least that's what I've read. People who try to do a lot of multitasking tend to end up doing both tasks poorly. My personal experiences have confirmed that. I used to have multiple tasks at work, and would have to frequently switch gears. Two tasks that might take an hour each to accomplish, will take 2 and a half to 3 hours total, if you keep trying to switch between them. It's because it takes time to readjust your mind to each of them. If you are going to watch a movie, just watch the movie. Learn to focus.
+Board Game Brawl you are right. I was listening while working on something else and looking at video between time to time to see the games pictures. I was unlucky to never catch the flash.
5th edition D&D is quite good. If you liked the 3.5 version of it. They basically took the best from all the d&d systems and put them together and removed all the terrible complicated rules. Highly recommended!
+Albert L. Tielebein IV Level 7 escape is AWESOME, or if you're into super troopers I really like Zenoshyft: Onslaught. Prepare to get your butt kicked at Zenoshyft though, its hard.
yep.. kingdom death: monster good choice. with my group we can't even make it past year 3 in a single night. at times i wonder what it would be like to hit the final lantern year..
It's funny, your collection behind you is almost the same as mine. Your taste in solos obviously, very similar as well. In addition, BoardGameBliss is one of the few choices I have for games up here in my neck of the woods as well. I do prefer WoodForSheep.ca, but that's me. Anyway, the only thing I would change on this list is Pathfinder Card Game. I find Warhammer Adventure Card Game has completely replaced it for me. It's like LOTR Card game but without the deck building. You feel much more involved and engaged and less like it's all just flipping cards and dice rolls. However, I can't picture playing it any other way than solo.
Lots and lots of solo games. A pity you ignored the better ones. No Butterfield designs ? It is like speaking about the 100 meter sprint and mentioning Bolt ...
Hi Nick; interesting list. Curious if you've tried any of the solo designs from Victory Point Games. In my view, Cruel Necessity, Hero of Weehawken, Nemo's War, Darkest Night, and Astra Titanus are all standouts of the genre. Challenging, fascinating, and idiosyncratic historical/thematic content. Also: glad to see Mage Knight make the list. Thought you'd come around, eventually. : )
+KX5Kat Do you play with a group as well or do you play exclusively solo? It's a game I've been looking at and researching lately and wonder how much it would feel different playing solo vs with my group.
+dennislutyens Ultimately, it's a solo game IMHO. I played with a bud and though we loved it, it just felt too rushed. you want to take your time, make decisions, plan your societies future etc. (so downtime) A single campaign is played over weeks or months, literally. it'll be hard to find someone who'd be up for that. Think of it as playing something like Final Fantasy co-op, it just wouldn't work.
+Straddllw Robinson Crusoe is an amazing game, however, I find that it does lack when it comes to replayability. The other scenarios are pretty much the same, after working out a solid strategy for the first scenario, I don't feel motivated to try the rest.
Sigh.... thanks..... came here looking for some ideas of a solo board game to get..... ended up thinking "wow, thats an awesome thumbnail on the video...." then hit google and now have an anime to watch instead :)
Weird list, Pathfinder? LOTLCG is million times better, and Warhammer Quest is a million times better than both of them. So many games out there that are great for Solo, Elder Sign, even Pandemic, D&D Boardgames, the list is now pretty big but again a weird list. BTW i now think more players are playing Solo than in a group these days.
I agree, LoTRLCG is an amazing solo game. In fact, I've tried with two players and just found it "okay" at best. Pathfinder sucked. It's so obviously an attempt to cash in on the successful RPG. Haven't tried Warhammer Quest but I've been eyeing it pretty hard...
+Tennethums1 lol. I often say pathfinder card game is nothing more than the creators just throwing in dice and rpg items and then trying to make a game out of it

Thanks for the video. I had to make a top 10 solo board game video myself because no one had done a recent one for a while
Glad you didn't change...keep your intro's and keep being yourself. I appreciate it. One can only learn the unknown if it time is taken to tell them.

Hey Nick Just wondering have your ever played Hoplomachus. Great solo game aswell.
Nice list
GREAT GAME ...
Hi Nick. Question about Ghost stories. Wat do you think about the first expansion : white moon? is it essential for ghost stories lovers (we usually play it with two players).

What storage shelves are you using ?
Hey that was a cheap shot against the mage knight miniatures game. I loved that game.
lol, sorry, I've never even played it. It's just never talked about anymore, compared to its younger sibling.
+Brandon Ledward Yeah, MK Dungeons is still a ton of fun!
+fingolfinfinwe yeah wizkids messed up again. When they tried to bring it back a couple of years ago, they should've went with dungeons.
What was the "cheap shot"? I didn't hear any cheap shots. He just wasn't crazy about it.
+Brandon Ledward I think that it is just hard to play casually cause it has so many rules. That is the reason why I wont buy it either. It looks like such an awesome game though.
What is the name of the game displayed behind Danny C's left shoulder with the teeth and tongue?
It's a box of Super Dungeon Explore stuff. (Also, this isn't a Danny C video.)
it's not what I expected but thanks for your insight
Well worth the wait. Thanks Nick. Prediction: Mage Night will move up 2 or 3 spots next year before fading back.
good choices Nick!

5 - Carnival Zombie
4 - Race for the Galaxy w/ Gathering Storm
3 - Legendary (Marvel/Alien/Predator)
2 - Shadowrun: Crossfire
1 - Sentinels of the Multiverse
second to death Angel. It's great and wicked hard
Thank you for the list Nick. My favourite is TS:Advance (Epic mode ) which i know that you also really enjoy :)
do you play legendary solo or play something like solo playing as 2 players
+Joseph Pilarski I started off playing Legendary solo, but I got bored with that and the extra rules. I found that playing two players was more enjoyable as long as you can remember who's turn it is.
2 player Solo is deaf the way to go. I use a lil Deadpool figure to keep track of who's turn it is. : )
love solitary game , great video Nick :)
Nice list Nick!

I didn't make that up -- it's a well-known and studied phenomenon: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_multitasking
"Zombie 15" I found that it doesn't have a solo mode
I m Also Making a Solo Board Game Called JungleFall
How about Arkham Horror LCG?
no imperial settlers.... figured Nick would love that
I was so surprised that Super Dungeon Explore did not make the list! Nevertheless, great list anyway.
I suggest to show us the cover of the game and some pictures of the game pieces etc.
+MVashM I'm really not sure what you're talking about. Every entry has a picture of the cover and one representative image of the game pieces.
+Board Game Brawl

I enjoy playing Eldritch Horror solo
What game is the one that looks like a living book with its tongue out? It's above your left shoulder
I've been trying to find out for awhile what that game is, have you figured it out?
I've been trying to find out for awhile what that game is, have you figured it out?
It's a box of Super Dungeon Explore stuff.
why can't I find that box anywhere for super dungeon explorer? I mean I found the game but not that box specifically.
I think it came with the extra stuff from the Kickstarter.
Pathfinder Adventures was just released for mobiles.

Thanks Nick, much appreciated :D Now... what's my bank account doing?
Whhhhaaaaaaaaat!?!?! I can't believe that is your number one!!! You asked, I tried :)
Without watching this, I'm going to guess Eldritch Horror, Mage Knight, Kingdom Death: Monsters (as number 1)
Damn, can't believe Eldritch didn't make the list and I can't believe I forgot about Robinson Crusoe.
+Straddllw
Robinson Crusoe is an amazing game, however, I find that it does lack when it comes to replayability. The other scenarios are pretty much the same, after working out a solid strategy for the first scenario, I don't feel motivated to try the rest.
No Eldritch Horror. It's my #1 game of all time. Flawed list, IMHO.
anyone's nightmare would be you commenting a lot
