    It was a great eye opening video, they are Khmer as well and I hope they get the help or aid they need. Yeah generations of Khmer Chams lived in boats. Thanks Pat for uploading and letting people be aware what problems people in Cambodia deal with.

    I hope Sokha and government can relocate them without any conflict. Their struggles are enough; don’t need another headache. Very informative video and nice of you to have them voice their opinion/need.

    This is sad. They are Cambodians too. I hope the government will have compassion and understanding, and find way to help them. They have been living on the boat all their lives. They need help.

      @Neicha Reich I am an American, Asian American. I was raised and lived here all my life, ever since I was one year old. So, I don't know what chams is. They spoke Cambodian and sounded like one. I'm sure they were born and raised there, so they are Cambodians.

    • @nhym0022
      @nhym0022 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where did Chams come from? I never heard of them. But they are still people that needs help. We need to help them. They are struggling to survive in life. Oh, and I'm also part Vietnamese. I'm Cambodian mixed Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese and some European genes. My mom said my grandfather from my dad side is Thai Chinese and a little European. She forgot what European. Usually most Thai and Cambodian are mixed with French but she said it's not that. I did a DNA test from My Heritage and they said I'm a little Finnish, north and west European.

      @Neicha Reich that guy doesn’t even know Cham people.how can a person read about Khmer history and not encounter the champa kingdom ? He’s too preoccupied obsessing over his European genes lol.

    • @streetbs3586
      @streetbs3586 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Neicha Reich that’s interesting, I’ve been down some crazy rabbit holes myself regarding SEA history. What ever you do, don’t google khmer is not khom. It could have been a Cham fishing village. Because Angkor was more of a nationality than an ethnic group. What do you think of that theory ?

    • @streetbs3586
      @streetbs3586 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Neicha Reich because in history books it’s always been illustrated as ruled by the Khmer ethnic group. The only account of what real life Angkor was depicted by a Chinese scholar. He described the ruling class as white skin and fond of silk. And the working class as dark.
      Come on bro , you act like people could just catch a flight to Angkor back in the days lol, Manhattan. I think Marco Polo may have been the only western documentation of what Angkorian life was about

    Generation to generation, Khmer Islam who lived along Mekong River earned living by catching fish and sell to people. So sad to see how their lives had to go through on daily basis. I hope the government or the company should subsidise their incomes, their housing for these people. No one want to live in such a tiny boat and have no place to land.

    cham people are genetically close to khmers despite speaking a austronesian language
    quote
    "Comparing the Chams with other Southeast Asian populations reveals that the Chams had a closer affinity with the Mon-Khmer populations in MSEA than with the Austronesian populations from Island Southeast Asia (ISEA). Further analyses failed to detect the potential homelands of the Chams in ISEA. Therefore, our results suggested that the origin of the Cham was likely a process of assimilation of massive local Mon-Khmer populations accompanied with language shift, thus indicating that the Austronesian diffusion in MSEA was mainly mediated by cultural diffusion"

      I watched a video on TH-cam, a guy called Maurice. He made some absolutely fantastic videos about Cambodia. One day due to having too many strikes for whatever TH-cam deleted his channel of all his videos and life’s work going back for years, absolute evil for stuff, He explained how Malaysian missionaries came to Cambodian fishing villages and built schools with Saudi money, then got everybody to wear all the Islamic dress and next thing you know everyone’s a Muslim. That’s pretty much out of the whole of Asia got to be Muslim I’d expect.

      I believe you are saying they share the same citizenship as ethnic Khmer but are not ethnically Khmer. Similar to me being American but not ethnically Caucasian like the majority of Americans. So the Chams are Khmer citizens--just not ethnically Khmer. "Cambodian" is the English word for Khmer people. "Khmer" is (for lack of not having Khmer font) our own word for Khmer people. So if you say the Chams are Cambodian, so can also so they are Khmer (citizenship-wise).

    • @asherouk7308
      @asherouk7308 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But they are called Khmer Islam by Khmer Cambodians themselves. It’s actually a powerful statement - an act of solidarity. It means that Khmers consider the Chams equals (even though are not Buddhist and they’re language is not from the Mon-Khmer family). It’s a form of inclusivity similar to how Khmers call the various mountain tribes like Pnong and Jarai “Khmer Loeu”- whether or not they speak or understand Khmer or not.
