    Wow bro, so good to hear a foreigner make all the effort to learn another language that is definitely not the easiest to learn.
    I don't see many learning Khmer.

    Love this vid in particular. All your content is very enjoyable man. I lived in Japan for 8 years so I have experience living in Asia. I couldn’t agree more with your points. I learned Japanese and had a much more fulfilling life in Japan compared to my fellow westerner friends who couldn’t speak it. They had a lot of problems and misunderstandings that could’ve been so easily avoided had they made a little more effort to learn the language. I also made a lot of Japanese friends through the graffiti scene which only enriched my life in Japan in so many ways. I see no reason to move to a foreign country if you aren’t even willing to make friends with the locals and learn the language. Seems like a waste of time to me..

    This is an example of Chinese influence over local Khmer’s to the point that even local Khmer’s are obliged to practice this and the locals often get addressed the same way as Chinese descendants would, even though they aren’t of Chinese descent. I prefer bong/lok bong/nek bong/lok p’oun/ah oun/ p’oun srey/lok pu/lok ming/om/lok ta/lok yeay.. ✌️

    • @danykh152
      @danykh152 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They are not obliged. They just want it. I’m half blood Chinese, Khmer style sounds preferable to me, however, I need to be flexible when calling them as few of them are sensitive.

    • @stephenguy3901
      @stephenguy3901 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @danykh152 , " they are not obliged " yet " need to be flexible " because some are sensitive. That's a borderline obligation.

    Most of the Khmer elites and educated people were murdered during the genocide, so that has a huge impact on a lot of things in Cambodia, including their language. Some were fortunate to escape to Europe or USA, including my good friends and their families. Another thing my friend wanted to point out, (I forwarded this video for her to watch 😊) is that most of the rural people are influencing the country as a whole more now since the Khmer Rouge takeover. Maybe that’s because the Khmer Rouge tried to destroy and overthrow the elites, educated people, and the Royal family as well as destroy refinement, formal etiquette, culture, art, architecture, royal etiquette, education, etc…. Well, my research also showed that the King Sihanouk got involved with the Khmer Rouge as well and later realized it was a mistake that was too late. He gave them that much power and permission to destroy his people and own country. Those evil monsters ruined their own people and country, which was once prominent and powerful. Much of a country is destroyed when you allow evil and uneducated people to govern it. It’s much like trump and his gangs here in the USA. It’s unfortunate that many good Cambodians became victims in that nightmare. I hope it gets better for Cambodia and Cambodians soon. Most of The people are so lovely and friendly.
    My friend also mentioned something about the red plaid scarf (krama?) and insect diet. They were commonly used and eaten by the countryside people and the Khmer Rouge. It has no place in city people society, middle class, upper middle class, upper class, and most definitely, not in the Royal family. My friend says there seems to be a misconception or trend that the insect diet and red plaid scarf are representative of Cambodians when that is far from the truth. They only represent the countryside people and not Cambodia and Cambodians as a whole. The insects were mostly eaten by rural people because it was hard and expensive for them to find food. Cambodian foods are so diverse and there is so much to learn and discover, including their good yummy foods.

    The first time speaker of Khmer language use Bong too much or incorrectly. At a restaurant, I heard a older woman (grandma age) called a young lady server, Bong. I cringed. It is way off the normal usage. If the person is younger, use Oun, except with the young women who prefer not to be called Oun because it also means honey/babe. But most of the time, it is okay to say Oun.

    Hello,
    This is Mike, i just wonder how to set up a bank account from the US with a domestic bank in Cambodia - since there is no direct banking from the States allowed - except via ATM transactions. Would it be necessary first to open an account with another foreign bank account that does business in Cambodia - in order to transfer fund from an America bank account to that account first hen to one's own Cambodian account there. Any advice please, thank you!

    The real meaning of "bong" is someone older than you, We call "bong" a person older than us, but not old enough to our parents'age yet. We use "bong" to an adult person younger than us too, especially from man to a woman, to make them accept us, because that means "I come in peace, I respect you, not want to be superior..etc...".
    "P'own" means person younger than you; then it become "own" to be closer, close relative, close friend,....BUT, don't call a girl (stranger to you) about your age "own", it will be an insult with sexual intention. So, for a man, the right word to use to call a young lady is "bong" or "bong Srey".

    you must be really green to Scambodia. im 35 years south east asia can speak 6 south east asain languages some more than others. i not need to speak anything to get lcoal price. locals just speak to be in whatever local language im in iirst before i even have the chance to show they not just me speaking but without a accent. i can tell myslef the expats quite accurately how long there time is in said country by the level of there pronoucation. as you can NOT learn prouncation it only gets better in your sleep on auto pilot.
    like did you know that its also real easy for local khmers to know right away who the Khmer Auk Ne Ka Jung (Overseas) are. no need to speak anything. its partly the clothes you wearing they know if can be bought locally or not. wearing shorts dead give away is a not long in cambodia. but also the confidence level and body language again cant be taught only comes with time. amazingly even in tourists area near 100% all local whereever i am just speak to me in there language before if i did. and they just give me the correct price. as when they think you are very long there or born there you would never be able to pay more.
    fun fact the prices in cambodia are FIXED not need any bargaining. if you even have to ask how much you are a fool and they know it. so very many times taking toyota camry this or that town. dumb expat asked the price how much first. but local never even asked. and at end to destination just paid what the fixed going price is
