The scene where Jimmy is telling Karen to go around the corner for the dresses, but she knew that he was going to kill her, I grew up down the street from where they were in Brooklyn. I remember when they were making this movie, all the kids would stand around, watching them. I was just a kid, as well, and I thought it was so exciting, plus my father was a huge De Niro fan (Rest in peace, Dad).

The scene when Henry was geeked out in the strip mall was Richmond Ave. Staten Island.
I don’t think he planned to kill her or Henry personally, I think he was paying to have a third party kidnap her to lure Henry to a discreet location… to kill both of them. Jimmy of course would know nothing about it
Believe it or not, Tommy actually did those things and was more of a psychopath in real life than depicted in the film.
The theory on why the real Tommy was so “crazy” was supposedly his brother was an informant so to make up for someone in his family being a “snitch” Tommy was an out of control tough guy
I know how he felt about the brother. but you can't put a whole antisocial psychopathic personality and tendencies like he had on the will to proove yourself
One time tommy bought a gun off the streets.. to test it he walked up to the first person he saw.. some random lady.. and shot her in the back of the head. Wtf

@@binkymagnusI played GTA Vice City when I was little and saw that Goodfellas was gonna come on TV and that Ray Liotta would be in it too. I thought it’d be an action movie with chases and shootouts but boy was I in for a surprise
That look in DeNiro's eyes when he finally decides to whack everybody else is so chilling... especially with that song playing.
For real. It reminds us all why DeNiro was an absolute beast as an actor during this period. Roles in classics such as Raging Bull, Deer Hunter, Taxi Driver. Before he sold his soul taking parts in hack movies over the last 15 years.
Its kind of comical the way hes staring at Morrie when the Eric Clapton song starts. You know what hes thinking but its kind of funny and he makes deciding to kill someone look really cool lol
You always go out in one way or another to or by the people you love and trust the most. Whether you hear a song or nothing at all. You flash, you're there, if just for a moment in everyone else's lives.... When you go your whole life is there just for that moment.

The creator of the Sopranos called this movie his handbook for creating the perfect Mafia story. It's not coincidence that so many actors from Goodfellas appeared in the Sopranos.
Even the foot shooting scene is in The Sopranos. And funny thing is.. Michael Imperioli is the one shooting the foot this time :D
They occasionally paid homage too. For instance, it's no coincidence that Christopher makes the guy in the pastry shop dance and shoot him in the foot.

I always thought it was cos there's just enough Italian actors to pull it off but not quite enough to be different actors in mob movies and shows
Tony Sirico (he plays Paulie Walnuts in that show) is seen early on in the movie; the last you see him is when Karen gets out of the car, yelling at Henry about getting stood up.
"I thought they were GOODfellas!" One of the best lines ever haha

It was the theme of the movie too. I've watched this movie from VHS to Blu-ray and never get tired of it. Even though the end always bums me out.

Ray Liotta, the actor who played Henry Hill, went to high school in union, nj with my mom. my mom was friends with his girlfriend during their junior and senior year. So sad that he passed away, he was a terrific actor.
If I remember correctly, Joe Pesci was also from Union City, as was the Genovese Caporegime wiseguy in The Irishman, Anthony "Tony Pro" Provenzano, who was the Teamsters president of that area in the 50s-60s
Paul Sorvino, who played Paulie, was apparently one of the nicest people you could meet. When he got the role, he didn't know how to play someone so ruthless. One day, at home, he caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror. The look he saw scared him and that's the cold stare you see in the film. An incredible actor. His daughter is Mira Sorvino.
In the 1970's he played a cop on television named Bert D'Angelo. He was one tough and mean cop. His favorite line was "If you're lying, I'll break your arm in three places." He knew how to play Paulie. And he was the nicest of people. May he rest in peace.
I remember watching 'good morning America' the day after his daughter won an Oscar, they were still up partying till the morning and he was on the show from home haha he was so happy and buzzed from celebration. He was so happy for his daughter. Bless his heart I never seen or heard of him like that ever.

I remember reading that Paul Sorvino is super nice. He also had a penchant of playing cop characters back then.
Would love for you guys to do a Bronx tale. Robert deniro but this time instead of the gangster he’s the father who’s son is involved with the mafia. It’s also a love story when the son falls in love with a black girl from another neighborhood. So good

The actor that plays Sunny wrote the story. It's based on his life. Calogero is his real name.

That was the director's, Martin Scorsese, mother playing Pesci's mother. Martin told her to just be mom in the scene, it was mostly improvised.
Fun fact, the "funny how?" scene wasn't in the script. It was a complete surprise to everyone but Joe Pesci. That's why everyone's surprise and confusion is so genuine.
People who knew the guy Joe Pesci was playing said while the scene is fictional, this is exactly the kind of shit the original enjoyed doing.

This was my favorite scene in the movie. It held the suspense of Tommy's insanity so well that you didn't know whether Henry was actually going to die or not. Such a great scene.

I wanna say that the Lufthansa Heist is still the biggest cash robbery in US history. This is an amazing movie. RIP Ray Liotta.
I think it was at the time (roughly $8 million in cash and jewels) but was passed by the Loomis-Fargo armored car robbery in 1997, which was turned into the 2016 movie Masterminds (with Zach Galifinakis, Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig, and Jason Sudekis)
@Lawrence Dockery, you are correct, sir. It was a woman who worked there and her boyfriend. They got away with about 16 million dollars if remember correctly.

There's one not to long ago that's unsolved as well.. 3 guys hit the armored car picking up the cash from a giant casino near Detroit. They got over 3 million in cash. Most of it was in 20s.. so they brought a jack to get it in their van.. about 800 lbs in cash lol.. it hadn't been solved yet to my knowledge

Reel talk! I grew up in NY. Studied Italian in school. We had a career day and a female FBI agent spoke to my Italian class to show how foreign language studies helped her get the job. She was a substitute teacher but was fluent in Italian and Russian and got hired. She would go undercover as a mob member's girlfriend and listen in at dinners and gatherings and translate their activities.
My favorite line in the movies, when they’re being rounded up: Whoever sold you those suits had a wonderful sense of humor.

It’s nothing less than a masterpiece. Roger Ebert called it: “The Best Mob Movie Ever.”
Paulie’s slap to Hill’s face when warning him against drug dealing was improvised by Paul Sorvino, hence Ray Liotta’s surprised expression was genuine.
Also Tommy was based on Tommy ‘two gun’ Desimone who stood 6’2 and over 200 lbs. According to Henry Hill he was every bit the psycho he was in the movie, sometimes shooting people just to test out new guns he’d obtained to see how well they worked.
Interesting bit of trivia about Tommy's character. The guy that actually pulled the trigger and took him out in real life was John Gotti.

Allegedly, Tommy was really close to Stacks and maybe the one person he felt bad about killing.
The real Henry Hill said the movie guys "Made Tommy look _nicer than he really was."__ "He was a real homicidal maniac." (then uncomfortable laughter).
This movie, along with The Godfather 1&2, are undoubtedly the pinnacle of gangster movies

The elderly lady who played Joe Pesci's mother, was actually the director's mom, Mr Martin Scorsesee.
(Not so) fun fact, the real Tommy (Thomas DeSimone) was even more of a psychopath in real life but the one person he actually liked was Stacks Edwards and was a close personal friend. But because Stacks messed up so bad, Tommy was ordered to kill him and it is said this is the one murder that he had any remorse over.
You guys should react to a Bronx tale!
Whenever Joe Pesci plays a hothead in a mob movie he usually dies. While people like that could usually be useful as enforcers they had a habit of bringing unwanted attention to themselves. In this movie he killed a “made guy” without getting the appropriate approval. What’s worse is it was a Gambino member one of the five families. I don’t think it’s explicitly mentioned in the movie but Paulie’s character was a caporegime for the Lucchese family another of the five. Which is why Henry told Karen he was a union rep for construction/waste management as that was a “legitimate” they had a controlling interest in.
It’s not explicitly mentioned in the movie but there’s subtle references to the fact Karen was having an affair with Paulie. Like him sending Henry to Florida after their big fight saying he would talk to Karen. That relationship is what would allegedly be the reason Tommy was killed as Karen told Paulie about Billy Bats and after Tommy tried doing something to Karen Paulie told the Gambino’s. (At least according to the real Henry Hill which isn’t actually that reliable a source)
Henry wasn’t actually that important in real life which is why he survived being kicked out of witness protection. It was a turbulent time for the mob and everyone that would’ve wanted him dead was already locked up or dead.
Karen never knew about Bats, though? Henry told her it was a skunk or something while washing the trunk of his car

Whacking Spider, on impulse...turns out he was the nephew of a made man... that was another nail in his coffin ...or wherever in some landfill.
@Joseph Hickman Henry Hill's Mother was from Sicily. His father was Irish. When he showed up in the suit she said, "You look like a gangster!"
@Joseph Hickman Tommy DeSimone was a very violent guy. Unfortunately, his snap decisions and disregard for those around him is what got him clipped.
This movie is a classic that must not and cannot ever be redone.
Two fun facts:
1. My dad was friends with Lorraine Bracco’s (Karen) cousin for most of his life, they were best friends but he sadly passed away.
2. The scene where Jimmy tried to whack Karen was actually filmed in my neighborhood.
Carroll Gardens! My daughter and son-in-law lived in that neighborhood for many years. I used to look for the diamond window above the door that Lorraine Bracco walks by as we drove by.
@@diane39istockphoto Yes, that’s the place. My family on both sides has lived in this neighborhood for over 65 years! I’ve grown up here all my life. It’s become heavily gentrified unfortunately, and most of the old timers are almost completely gone now. Really sad to see that gentrification is driving out the people who have lived there for generations unfortunately.

As an Italian American, from NYC your accent was too darn funny, in a sweet way though. My hubby is from the deep South, and he tries an Italian accent all the time, sounds just like u too!! You guys rock!🤟

It's such an entertaining flic. Most movies sag a little in the middle, but "Goodfellas" holds my attention and charms me all the way to the end!
According to Michael Franzese, who was a boss in the Colombo family, Henry Hill, who passed away back in 2012 was a troubled sole, with a serious drug and alcohol problem. He said the real Henry Hill had nowhere near the status portrayed in the movie. I think it's one of the best movies ever made.
Henry probably was as big of hitter as Franzese was. There was a lot more ways to earn back then. I respect Michael Franzese, but I take what he says with a grain of salt. After all Scorsese never made a movie about Michael Franzese.

He likes to pretend he's a reformed criminal who found religion, but if you listen to what he says, he's still deep into that criminal/conman mentality. So what he said about Hill can't be trusted. Neither can what Hill said about Hill, though.

Brooklyn originally, I felt like that could have been my family. We got Tonys, Frankie's, Annette, Joannas, Paulies and Carmines. Just to name a few. Lol I love this movie I. So glad you all did too. 🩷
My dad, long time deceased, actually grew up in Rockaway Point with Jimmy Burke (the DiNiro character). He was a tough kid too.

I actually saw Goodfellas in the theatre in Oct 1990, we were in the next theatre over watching "Mr. Destiny" when we decided to walk out 10 minutes into the film...went next door thinking this can't be worse than what we almost sat through. I never heard of Goodfellas until I was in the theatre seeing it. You should've seen the people's reaction seeing the "you're a funny guy scene"...I will never forget the experience of seeing this in Hawthorne movie theatre which doesn't even exist anymore. I think it's now an Audi dealership.
This reaction has the single best line ever from a reactor thanks to Asia, "I wonder if Paulie ever found out about the Gambini", still making me laugh.
Coincidentally Joe Pesci plays someone named Gambini in My Cousin Vinny.

The name of the book was “Wiseguy” by Nick Pileggi. There was a TV show by that name and Martin Scorsese had to call the movie something else, so they came up with “Goodfellas.” Mob guys are called Wiseguys in New York.

What I love about this movie is the timing. At the beginning, it's kinda slow moving, in the middle it moves along well, by the end, it's frantic and gritty... Absolute brilliance. Oh, and the sound track, especially Into The 🔥 Fire.....

oh Asia, I was squirming when you said "no violence" at the very beginning because I knew you were not going to get your wish. Such a great movie, and I really enjoyed both of your reactions.
A lot of people say this is the best movie ever made. It's hard to disagree. It's truly incredible. The suspense and the way they depict paranoia when DeNiro is telling Henry's wife to look around the corner for the dresses, was subtly and through just inflection and dialogue, insanely suspenseful. Absolutely one of my favorites

In terms of quality of output, Joe Pesci is a sheer GOAT at delivering a character. Just a GOAT. 😎🥃
In terms of playing mob guys Pesci is the undisputed #1 ever. Most real mob guys from that time said Pesci played them the most accurately. Not for being a maniac, just the way he'd talk and his mannerisms, he absolutely nailed his role as Tommy and he did an amazing job as Nicky in Casino, basically the same character but maybe slightly less crazy

@ReelinwithAsiaandBJ The thing about this movie is it's not far off at all from how things were. I grew up in NY at that time and it truly was like the wild west. All kinds of crime was rampant, you really didn't want to wander too far from your own 'hood or be out at night, the subway was a total nightmare 24/7; and the mob did have a hold on waste management and construction and few other industries. (Ironically, one of the US Attorneys back in the '80s to try the mob on RICO charges was Rudy Guiliani!) The daily papers would actually print crime scene photos of hits on the front page. The Luftansa heist happened too, my mom always had the radio on in the morning while getting us ready for school and I remember her hushing us so she could hear the report, then later on it and the hits that followed were something all the adults were talking about.
Fun Fact: in Goodfellas, director Martin Scorsese brought his parents Catherine and Charles to play both the mother of Joe Pesci's character and as the cook from the prison scene.
Hearing Asia say "they didn't even wait 5 minutes" is awesome, every time.
For the NY circa 1970s,80s Italian accent, watch Eddie Murphy's Raw when he talks about Italians and Rocky. I'm half Italian and grew up in NY before moving to TX. He nailed it! No joke. Even Italians didn't know they were talking like that before he pointed it out. Classic. Thank you Eddie Murphy 😊
Michael Franzese, a former Colombo family gang member, has a YT channel. He says the prison cooking scene is all fiction, none of that would ever happen. He's reviewed many mob related movies and his insights are fascinating.
Henry Hill and Michael Franzese met briefly in a Cali prison. Hill told him not to let on that they knew each other. Hill's wife was having an affair with Paulie's real life mob boss. He convinced both of them to get back together. Incidentally, Michael F is the only gang member to walk away from the mob and live. He never ratted on anyone and if anybody had a beef with him, they're dead now.

THANK YOU for this!.. Goodfellas is one of my top-5 all time favorite flicks. Watching you guys enjoy it (and so many other great movies) for the first time is so much fun! There is so much about this movie that is top-notch film making. If not for The Godfather, this would be the greatest gangster film made.

I love the doo-wop vocals around "C" 's high school when he meets his girl Jane, it just sets the emotional, romantic and sadly dangerous tone of their involvement with each other. It's the first thing that hits me when anyone mentions A Bronx Tale, as you just did. A special film.
If you like these movies then check out Donnie Brasco. Another one based on a true story. Best AL Paccino in my opinion.

It's Scorcese. He pulls no punches. This movie is one of his top three ever, along with Raging Bull and Taxi Driver. It is easily one of the top 10 movies of the 1990s. The change in tone as the movie moves along in time from the early 1960s to the 1970s is subtle but engrossing. It becomes increasingly more frantic and disjointed as things become unraveled in Henry's life and among the mob members. Joe Pesci manages to convey sheer terror with his insanity just below the surface of Tommy's character. That this masterpiece didn't win Best Picture at the Oscars was a joke.

Did they know Spider in Goodfellows played Christopher Moltisanti in the Sopranos? The inside joke is that Spider gets shot in the foot in Goodfellows and later in The Sopranos Christopher Moltisanti shoots the pastry guy in the foot and says, "It happens" hahaha 😆 😂 🤣

Yes! And they changed their last names. I don't know why, because their identities are legal public record. Jimmy's name was Jimmy Burke and not Jimmy Conway. And Tommy was Tommy DeSimone not Tommy Devito. Tommy was crazier in real life and WAY taller. Also, Paulie was Paul Vario, not Cicero. They didn't change the names in the novel "Wiseguy" either, which this is based on.

4:48 when you mentioned sopranos, literally right when your screen cuts away and the dude gets up out of the car, that guy getting out of the car is the actor who played Paulie walnuts on sopranos. So many reoccurring actors in sopranos who either got their start on goodfellas or stuck around throughout the crime drama genre.
The Departed should be your next Scorsese film. Then Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. The holy trifecta 😂❤️
