    Nice job! Very comparable to my ATI single shot 12 gauge, which I got from a pawn shop for the same price. Mine was already an18.5" barrel, and in the stock had a large compartment for the same kind of goodies, so I included one of those micro 12 gauge cleaning kits and othe goodies. Yep, these kinds of guns make great truck and survival guns. I ain't worried bout a zombie apocalypse, only how to gather some meat if I am stuck out somewhere in the woods, and those pesky two legged critters who might want to take advantage of me. I very much like your textured paint idea and when I finally get around to camo painting my truck gun will use that on my stock grip and forearm for better grip in wet weather! Good idea for a sling for this style gun, as it gets to be a pita to carry this sized gun over long distances if you are hiking out from nowhere! Have a great day! I am!

    I like the way that you did this and the paint that you used comes in various colors so that if you wanted to you could do a camouflage paint job on it plus with the cavity in the stock you could add a ferro rod and maybe a small fire kit or fishing kit, etc for survival purposes if needed. Nice job I am having a hard time finding this shot gun thoe and wish I could find one did they take them off the market

  • @llamawrangler8964
    @llamawrangler8964 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yep ... did basically the same thing but with the Hatfield 12ga minus the thumb screw. The metal nut for that screw broke off on mine. So ... a bit of Gorilla Tape holds on the fore stock. Have (9) different inserts (Chiappa X Caliper, 7" - 9mm, 38ACP, 357Mag, .44Mag, 45ACP, 40S&W, 20ga, 410ga) & (Short Lane, 8" - .22LR) to handle all kinds of ammunition. Have the same basic sights (True Glow)( a little dab of superglue keeps them intact). This thing is dead-on with all ammo types @ 50+ yds on a 4" target. Since there is more recoil with the 12ga ... removed the butt plate and used a slip-on pad. In the stock I installed a pc of steel wool on a string along with (2) 12ga shells. Can clean the barrel if needed or is a good fire starter along with the matches in the fore stock. Best thing with this setup .... forces (1) Shot (1) Kill mentality.

    There only a couple of things I would question, your lighter can dry up, unless you check it at least once a month to refill it. Your paint job, depending on your area where you live. I would have painted it to blend with your landscape, if you live in a desert region, your right on point, but if you live a wooded area, I would have picked a different color. Everything else is a great job. I believe your mods are the best I have seen on youtube. Keep them coming.

    Impressive. I, too, carry a few of those keychain lighters. Have had them for approximately 18 months. I find that by keeping the fluid consistently topped off they are more reliable than full sized Zippo’s because that capsule seats so well. Maybe a few swivels and hooks in the top well along with the Swiss Army knife? Best wishes. See you at the ramparts 👊🏼💥

    Great job! Perfect! I see videos on stuff and you kind of pick out what makes sense to you and what doesn't. What you did to the Hatfield was exactly the path my wacky brain would have taken me. If you're married, I'll bet the misses would rather you worked on house repairs haha. Being a carpenter/remodel guy, did you set up a router with a plunge bit for the battery compartment or drill multiple holes with a depth stop or marker on the bit and then just ream it out? A suggestion for filling in with epoxy, just like concrete, a rough surface will hold better. Even putting in some galvanized wire strands, drilled in at at angles kind of like rebar in concrete. Thanks for the video!

    Nice video you got some good mods there but I would put cotton balls inside where the battery and flashlight are,so you can't hear it rattling every time you pick it up ,that would drive me nuts , just my preference. The paint job looks cool. I have one in 410 that are used for hunting really like these Hatfield's that I bought the semi auto in 12 gauge.

    Any particular reason you went with a 20 GA instead of 12??? Love this build. Simple, efficient, practical, compact, and high value. Well done. Now you got the juices flowing! My wife thanks you-NOT!!! She'll say, the LAST thing YOU need is another gun project!!!

    • @alwaystinkering7710
      @alwaystinkering7710  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's a really good argument to be made for 12G as it's far more available. 20G is out there but it's not as common and common is good for a survival gun. Reviews of the 12G mentioned it's a bit harsh in the recoil department, and this is pretty significant even in 20G. The 20G is smaller and lighter (and so is the ammo) which I think made it better for the task but still makes big holes. I can get pistol caliber converters for it in 20G so that's not an issue. Also, curiosity because I've never owned a 20G and that's good enough reason. You could do this same conversion to a 12g but I don't know if Walmart still sells these.

    • @alwaystinkering7710
      @alwaystinkering7710  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! I have not tested it. I wasn't terribly concerned about that, I figure it for a close range self-defense and possible emergency food hunting weapon. My main goal was compactness for carry.

  • @herbderbler1585
    @herbderbler1585 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like what's going on here, but I have to ask if that light can survive the recoil. I've seen more than a few lights that fail after only a few dozen rounds from a shotgun.

  • @CurtisDrew1
    @CurtisDrew1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Add a rifled 9mm adapter and a 20 ga. side stock shell holder and you can use the butt stock to carry the 9mm ammo. The 9mm adapter will fit in the bigger hole of butt stock. Put some fishing line an cork and a few hooks in a plastic bag to pad the end next to the butt stock bolt. (Put the hooks in the round cork and wrap the line around the cork, leaving a line to pull it out of the stock. Going to use the forestock idea to carry my fire striker.

      Ha ha. I recently made up a short-barreled Rossi 20 gauge "tactical" single-shot and put one of the ATI extendable pistol grips and fore-ends on it. I also put a heat-shield on the top that has a peep or ghost-ring style sight on it which is only slightly adjustable. I figured it'd be way off for use with set of Chiappa pistol-caliber adapters I have. So first day out trying the gun, I fire a factory 45 Long Colt round out of the gun using one of the Chiappa adapters, and danged if the thing didn't hit exactly to point of aim at 25 yards right off the bat.

    Look up TH-cam to see how to take an empty Mini Bic lighter & re purpose it into a fire starter :) You cut the bottom white base off & pack the 2 holes with dryer lint,... Cover the ends with those little rubber sleeves off of a cheap spring clamp (Harbor Freight) You can remove the metal flame guard on the front & you have a nice little flint striker :)
    This could also fit nicely into your gun somewhere.
    Dollar Tree also has, for $1 a nice mini flash light with laser pointer for signalling for help.

    Here is a tip. You can drill a series of holes in the top of the stock that hold extra rounds of ammo. This puts them in a perfect position for quick reloading. My .410 holds 8 rounds. 4 of shot shell and 4 of .45 colt.,, Also, this little .410 can fire .44 magnum and .444 Marlin. Best mod for the $99 shotgun.

    • @arcyswopes9633

      @@arcyswopes9633 .444 Marlin is the same caliber as .44magnum, only with a lot more powder.. I call it the .44 magnum-magnum. Not all .410 shotguns can handle this power. Don't try this unless you are sure your gun can handle the pressure.

    • @arcyswopes9633
      @arcyswopes9633 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have an H&R single shot shotgun,it will hold a 444 magnum in the chamber and a 8mm round as well,but have not considered firing either one🤔🙏👍 an have no plans to even though the barrle is strong enough to handle it.Thanks

    • @timhallas4275
      @timhallas4275 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@arcyswopes9633 There's no sense shooting a small caliber rifle cartridge in a shotgun. The .410 is .41 caliber. A .30 something caliber bullet will be loose in the bore, therefore it will not generate much pressure, therefore it will be slow as hell out the muzzle. The plus side is, it couldn't possible blow up your shotgun.The .444Marlin is .429 caliber... a tight fit in your .410 bore. It will generate nearly as much pressure as it does in the chamber of a .444 Marlin rifle. If the chamber of your single shot H&R .410 is thicker than the chamber of a .444 Marlin rifle, it most likely can handle the pressure. My $99 Hatfield .410 has a heavy duty chamber and thick wall barrel. It handles the .444 like a champ. I'm getting enough muzzle energy to put that 230 grain soft point bullet through an 1/8th in. steel plate.

    You would have been better off getting the Hatfield in 12 Gauge. The reason is simple. With shotgun adapters you can run 20 Gauge in the 12 Gauge, And other calibers like 9mm, .22LR, .40 S&W/.410 ROUNDS JUST FOR STARTERS Food for thought.

      A fair question. Two reasons. I didn't own a 20ga and was curious how it compares to 12. The other was size/weight, the 20 is much lighter than the 12. They made a .410 and I considered it but passed for the 20 because it is big enough to take a subcaliber adapter to allow it to shoot other centerfire ammo. I'd like to get a 9mm adapter to go with it and it will far more effective as a SHTF gun.

    • @MrSTOUT73
      @MrSTOUT73 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. I just thought in a SHTF situation that 12 gauge would be more prevalent than 20. Beautiful job on the gun!

    • @alwaystinkering7710
      @alwaystinkering7710  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm sure it would be, ammo is much easier to get so a 12ga with a set of subcaliber adapters would be darned versatile. My philosophy is this is more of a get-home gun that would live in my car and always be there should I need a last-ditch weapon. If I had to abandon the car and hoof it, or stuck in bad weather, this would give me one thing to grab and go. Think of it more as "all else fails" tool. With just that I have a means of getting food, protection, light, and fire in one easy to carry package. I normally would have a pistol as well but this gives more punch at longer range. I wouldn't make this my first choice, it's a backup to a backup. All that said, it's a hoot to shoot! This thing is LOUD and puts a big hole in the paper. It's very satisfying!

      As usual 20 gauge gets no respect. A 7/8 oz. (382 gr) slug with a diameter of .61 at 1300 FPS generates 1400+ foot pounds of energy according to my ballistic calculator. Way higher than a 44 magnum. Pros: Lighter less recoil
      Cons: Ammo isn’t as prevalent or varied. Not as powerful as 12 gauge of course.

    • @alwaystinkering7710
      @alwaystinkering7710  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@duke927 There's a mentality that nothing but the biggest, fastest, and most powerful will do and anything less is a joke. [MORE POWER! (insert simian grunting here)] It's applied to anything that goes, turns, or bangs. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate some overkill too. But realistically, power always comes at a price of weight, size, and cost. My 60 HP motorcycle can take me anywhere I want to go and I can push it or lift one end if I need to. I don't need the weight of a 100 HP engine and I don't want a survival bike that's so heavy it can't be moved without a winch! Weight and space matter a lot especially if it's something you are going to carry on your (in my case, old) back and knees. OTOH my home defense shotgun is a Mossberg 12G that holds 7 rounds in a bullpup stock (see my video!) and fully loaded it's a heavy beast but because of its intended use I never have to worry about carrying it very far. Weight isn't a big concern in that application.

I just don't want my gun to not be functional during the time that I'm doing that because it might take some time for me to find the right size and if I knew what size it was that would save me from having to have a non-functional gun while I'm looking for a new pin.

    Why do these clowns always hack the barrel so short the shotgun becomes useless. Why bother with the sights? You have thrown the choke and a large portion of the barrel in the trash so just point the what’s left in the general direction of the target and hope one of the wide scattered pellets actually has some velocity left and hits something. Can I suggest you just keep a couple of rocks on your pocket and you can throw them at things.

    • @alwaystinkering7710
      @alwaystinkering7710  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. because it makes it more compact 2. 18-20" is a common size for a riot/close range shotgun 3. it's intended for close range self-defense and in that range pellets won't scatter much 4. slugs don't scatter 5. it didn't have a choke in the first place 6. police have used barrels that length for decades, I think they know some things 7. if you think shortening a 29" barrel to 20" takes it from "lethal weapon" to "throwing rocks" you don't know what you're talking about.

It's for getting through inhabited areas, with more range than a handgun so that taking small animals is possible. It's a compromise, I admit it, far from ideal for wilderness. It's purpose it to have _A_ gun that can do many things, not necessarily the BEST gun.
