This is brilliant! I'm surprised no company has manufactured a consumer overhead filming kit yet. creatives like us keep having to experiment with bits n bobs from other hardware & accessories
Thanks "bits and bobs" is now a functional part of my vocabulary 😂
Companies are missing out on a trick there!! Everyone should have bits n bobs as part of their vocabulary. Comes in so useful when you can't find the words.
@@IanBarnard lol!! Exactly bro
😂
This is actually the closest I can find to an ideal table-mounted base set up that the foundation doesn't take up so much space. www.amazon.com/dp/B06XPFJJ4T/?coliid=I2UK74E1HBT2LF&colid=2P1JCU3TSK42U&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it
Thank you!! I've always envisioned the best way for me to record was a setup like this, but I simply have so little knowledge of photography equipment that I had no idea where to start! While a bit of an investment I can't afford right now, I'll definitely be pursuing this in the future! Thanks Again!
does the camera setup shake when you draw on the table? I have a very stable table, but whenever I pick new pens, the camera shakes a bit, since everything that holds the camera is on the table. I figured out, the best way is to have a shelve or another desk or anything around the table, where one could place the tripods, holders or whatever one is using.
Thanks! It has helped me a lot. Got these and my setup is now simple and well working.
I've watched sooooo many overhead filming setups and this is hands down the best one. Thanks for all the tips!
Omg. I have searched high and low and this is literally what I have been looking for. Thanks. I already have the newer lights so it will be so easy to do this
You save my life. Its exactly what I am looking for!!! Thanks a lot 🙏
This is the best set up I have seen yet, thanks for sharing!!!!
Genius solution! Maximum stability! 👍
Hi, any suggestion on what extension pole to buy? Thanks for the tutorial!
You can use Samson's mic arm MBA38 for dslr. I have one for my Canon M6 and some times I'll put a T2i in it. They hold pretty good.
Good suggestion. Something I for got to say about the microphone arm was I kept knocking it with my arm. Part of my problem is that I'm clumsy. 🤦
Hey, great video! Do you think this setup supports a Canon (80D) a little bigger than your Sony? Also, which of the two Clamps do you think is stronger? The individual or the double one? I'm going to do one of these for myself and I have this doubt! Thanks (:
I do use my Canon 80D on this, but only with a lightweight wide angle lens on it, otherwise it can't take the weight.
Awesome video!! How would you add lighting to that? Like a ring light?
This is so helpful and perfect!! Thank you! 🤗🤗
This is so helpful and absolutely perfect!!
Hi, Yes I have a question, it is probably basic but I really don't know the answer so here I go:
At the end of your video you mentioned that you had your camera and your phone put up adjacent to each other for the shot so that you would shoot down where your hands are but then you would have at set up where you can also move to talk directly into the camera with your your cell phone camara. My question is how do you get those two shots the one that's going directly down and the one that is your full face on facial shot on to the same edited video?
I hope that makes a lick of sense. I super appreciate you! Your set up is brilliant I love that you put do much thought into it and I hope you can help me overcome my obstacles as well! Peace!
Hi Ian. I clicked through on your Kit link and I love that profile you've got on Amazon with the banner and everything. How did you do that please? 🙂
thanks for the tips!
I wanted to use the cloths hanger, but your idea is more... portable 😁
I'd like to thank you Ian for this video. I just used your affiliate links to purchase much of what you used here on Amazon. Figuring out the gear has been a challenge and this video was very helpful, so I'm happy to send a few affiliate dollars your way! Amazing lettering, by the way. I'm a realist artist getting started in the tutorial world and always shy away from anything with lettering. It's funny that I can make a scene or portrait look realistic, but have never been good with lettering. It is an art all unto itself and you make it look easy. Thanks for the content!
Damn 🔥 This is by far the best solution i've seen for overhead filming!
My setup consists of a GoPro and a mic stand, its very versatile - i also bring the same setup for when im out during murals 🎨 For the moment i'm pleased with it, but when i decide to upgrade to a heavier camera, i'm definitely gonna copy your setup - Thank you so much for sharing!
Wow. I never thought of using my go pro for recording art videos. Thanks for the idea!
This is really helpful, thanks, especially the 'solutions' that didn't work. 🎉
So I got the mic stand becauseI love the scissor joints for holding phones... but I realized this is literally made for a mic. but I notice on yours you have some sort of adapter so that it can hold your phone. Do you know what that part is?
This is the realest hack for top down shots.
It's perfect!! Thank you, I've been looking for a solution for months!
One of the best and simplest overhead rigs I've seen yet! Awesome! Thanks for sharing!

Does anyone know where I can get the mic boom arm extender and also the cellphone mount? Thank you!! This is a perfect set up!
Cindy Cheong amazon have them
HI Ian, can you tell me how you keep the light in your video's of the iPad so even? Mine seems to fluctuate a lot when i"m using my iPhone to film. So what settings do you use in your camera? and your phone? And how much do you bring the brightness of the iPad down?
Thanks!
This is so helpful!! Thank you I think I already have most of that equipment kicking around already! I have struggled for so long with getting an ideal set up
Amazing setup... Perfect one
Absolutely splendiferous, Ian. I have been going crazy trying all sorts of Heath Robinson ideas (PVC piping , broom handles etc). Your set up is reasonably cheap, Neewer is here in the UK, and, best of all, it looks more professional. Can't thank you enough :)
Glad you found it helpful Christine.
Helped me a lot.... I'll definitely shop from your shop 😂😂😂
wow this was great... never thought you could do this. I think i am going to do this, please could you do one about if you attached lighting on it, as i would like to do reviews with this setup and my space is small like yours.
Very helpful! Thanks for sharing those tips. I will try them for my own videos. 👍
I think it depends on the kind of camera. If you're filming with the phone it is kinda easier but with bigger cameras maybe it is better with something more steady.
What is the grey board on your table where you write called? Where wouuld I buy one?
What camera and lens did you use? And do you mind sharing the camera settings?thanks
thank you so much for this! I am curently waiting for the things to arrive. Every solution to the "how the heck can I mount the camera overhead without spending a fortune" I saw before was not practial. But this is simply perfekt! I can leave it sitting on my desk without fearing my toddler to trip it over :D. Thank you for letting us know, I realy appreciate it!
Great video, and beautiful lettering btw!
Thanks Shawn.
Loved your video! I have a question. What do you call that mat thing in your background? I've been wandering through internet and can't find any. Please help.
Hey Ian, thanks so much for this video! Would you be able to recommend the best lens focal lengths for overhead video with a crop sensor camera? I need to make videos showing a lot of hand movements (hand drumming techniques), but I'm a bit uncertain, even after a lot of research, on the best lenses. I use a Fujifilm mirrorless right now, and may be upgrading to an X-T3 or a Sony mirrorless. Sorry for this was a bit long! Thank you
It’s ok if you’re not going to touch the table. Any vibration on the table would distort the picture
Do you have that second solution linked in your bio? The one that clips to your desk and works well with your phone/ small webcam?
Any recommendations for a crossbar???
Hi Ian, what camera do you have? Thank you
Thank you for this! When I earn enough from vlogging my works, I would use this set up!
Ian, good job!
Excellent setup! Thanks so much for sharing that.
This is amazing! Thank you 👍
Oh gosh, thank you so much for sharing these helpful tips!! 💖
Thank you so much for sharing this, Ian! Super clever and efficient solution. I'm going to be grabbing this setup. Thanks again!
This video is super helpful!! Thank you so much! For the microphone phone stand, did you have to buy other parts other than the microphone stand and a phone holder?
thank you so much for this! i was looking for and i got no solution or really good tips. amazing! hope to find all the pieces here in brazil (and sorry for my bad english but i really want to say thank you)
I hope you do. They are all fairly standard pieces of equipment.
Hi Ian! I don’t see the boom pole in your Amazon shopping list.
Really awesome! Great innovation ✨
Hi, thanks for the video! Can you pls write the name of the attachment for mobile phone? Or send a link for purchase? I haven’t seen it on your list on amazon
Yes i need it to, anyone knows what kind of an adapter that is?
Hey Ian, can you link the horizontal boom arm you use?
Mark Tondi Seriously, like I can’t find one
It came with a lighting set that I bought ages ago. It's not very strong so don't recommend it. There seems to be a lack of boom arms available online. Neewer is one make you can check out.
@@nb_pixel I ended up just taking apart some extra mic stands i had and making an extension arm out of them...
Can this clamp hold 5dmark 2 and sigma 50 mm?
It would be awesome if you yourself made a kit like this available to purchase. Ive been looking and looking fot a set up to use while im working too but the problem is with importing, and I worry for the same reasons you had issues that I would invest and it would be a failure. Theres no way our island would carry any of those things, so to individually get them would be a challenge!!
Hi can you link where you bought all your items.
This is genius!!
Best setup
Perfect !! Thank U 😊
What is that microphone hand stand called for the mobile
Thanks!
Could you provide a detailed list of your various comments. I have a hearing problem. And could not hinder stand what you were saying as you went through the various pieces. This is exactly what I have been looking for to do overhead photography of coins and jewelry.do you have any idea of how to make the horizontal. arm capable of being raised or lowered without having to adjust the two side tripods?
There's a link called Kit List in the description which takes you to my Amazon store with a list of all the pieces of equipment I've used. Unfortunately the only way to lower the height is with each of the light stands.
Very useful, cheers Ian.
Thank!
So Beautiful...
Nice setup. Great video.
Genius!!!
This is so useful and practical!
Very helpful❤
Hi, thanks for this! I’ve been looking for a solution and haven’t found something that was adequate. One question. You don’t have an extension pole listed in your shopping list. Which one are you using?
I think this it: www.amazon.com/Neewer-Aluminum-Telescopic-Background-Crossbar/dp/B00YGNUBFQ/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=neewer+crossbar&qid=1587946623&sr=8-1
lighting? i always have issues with shadows around my hands. also this looks super easy! Thank you!
@@아는오빠-t5c that was a super cool video. great work !
How do you solve the problem?
Thanks a lot, this video helped me figure out my setup!
Where can I get these things at?
What floor mat are you using?
you look like Keith from Try Guys! Thanks for sharing!
AHAHAHAHA totally!!
Awesome! Thank you for the video. Very helpful!
Super!! I was really struggling with knowing what to purchase for filming overhead :)
Great solution! Really thought out
Thank you so much! So glad I've found your channel
Finally! A real solution
its highly useful information
Are these available in the UK, Ian?
Thanks for sharing! I bought all the parts but aparently its not gonna work for me. My little Canon M50 and the light kit lens cant even stay up. The camera keeps tilting downwards from its own weight, which is weird since its the lightest option. Any idea how to fix it?
Is it the pole that's moving round or the clamp? If it's the pole make sure that either end is properly secured at each end. If it's the clamp, make sure it's done up as tight as possible.
Hello what was the phone stand ?
This is so useful, thanks for sharing ❤!
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for this. I suspect You just saved me a bunch of time and money.
One suggestion that I can make is to unscrew the old ballhead from the quality tripods that we all already have and use it on your suggested setup. Why buy more equipment than is needed.
Thank you!
Nice, maybe I can do this version!
Could u pls list item, your link not working. Great video
I could not find the arm in your Amazon.😅
How about lighting setup?
Great idea. Will get thinking about that.
LITERALLY about to give this a shot for food videography tuts... thanks for this idea my man. +1 Like, +1 Sub 😃
HOW TO GET RID OF SHADOWS THAT COME FROM TOP
more light against the angle the shadow
Thanks, appreciate that video.
How much was the total
sooooo useful!
Great!
Thank for the information I will try it out +1 for Linden Houston Cooking
Very nice..
