    The “C” stands for Century. They were originally used on movie sets to hold 100-inch by 100-inch reflector panels to bounce light. Those panels were called Century panels for short, then just C panels. That’s why we call them C stands.

    Great video!! I bought my first C Stand almost 2 years ago and love using it. However I never realized that the legs on the base are different lengths! After watching your video I measured the legs and sure enough each one is a different length. I have a studio light along with a pretty heavy softbox mounted to the stand and I've had a couple close calls with it almost falling over when the boom arm was extended. Thanks to your video, I used some masking tape to mark the longer legs and now when I am shooting I will know which way to rotate the base of the stand for maximum stability. Really great tip and just goes to prove that there is always more to learn. Thanks for the post!!

    Whenever discussing C stands you should always mention the "righty tighty, leftie loosey" rule. Basically you want the mounted gear to be on the right of the grip head so the weight of it tightens the knob, and not vice versa.

      @@IstoryangPagibig so the place where you put the arm, or any other object, (the holes in the gobo head) tighten to the right. so when you put something in it the weight should be on it so that it turns to the right if you were to put pressure on it, if it turns to the left it will looses and fall. on the right it will simply get tighter and never fall

    Just stumbled across this video and it's super helpful (like the rest of your videos!). I've made a "Frankenstand" C stand out of stuff I had lying around: a microphone stand (musician!), a cheap super clamp and a couple of thread adapters and my tripod head. It works really well and immediately improved flat lay stuff! Thanks for the reccomendation!! 😁

    I would not place a sand bag on top of the C-Stand, but rather drape it over one foot. If you place it on top the C-Stand will become top heavy.

    • @TheBiteShot
      @TheBiteShot  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thx!

    • @cdb8315
      @cdb8315 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@TheBiteShot you drape the sandbag over the longer/higher leg. Otherwise it won’t do anything except rest on the ground. Also, never, ever, ever place a sandbag on top of the C Stand. It will max out the stand’s weight capacity and create a high center of gravity causing all your expensive gear to potentially topple over.

    Hi Joanie - thanks for this super helpful video! I bought the c-stand, rapid adapter, and the swivel/tilt head from B&H. All is good, except your B&H link leads to the wrong size rapid adapter. Same for the Adorama link. I'm now re-purchasing from the Amazon link. The correct one is: Manfrotto 014-14 Rapid Adapter - 5/8" Stud to 1/4-20" Thread. The wrong one is: Manfrotto 014-38 Rapid Adapter - 5/8" Stud to 3/8" Thread. Just thought you'd want to know!

    For those fortunate enough to have stands laying around use two stands connected with a horizontal bar. In between, the camera & head will then be connected to the bar. The whole setup is a real tank.

    Hi Joanie, First, I love all the formation you shared . I’m getting more into food photography along with my nature stuff. and really like the c-stand. I was using a smaller tripod and always worried about the camera tipping into the food. So, I purchased the almost same things except the head. A purchased a new one. One thing I have to mention is that there’s a bushing on the adapter because the head won’t fit(screw on). I watched the video again and saw that you have that bushing on your adapter. I called bh and ordered one for $2.11.

    Adding to the post by Rontz below. This is from the Adorama website:
    The name 'Century Stand' goes back to the days of motion picture production. There were no artificial light sources. No large tungsten lamps and certainly not quartz bulbs to illuminate. Just light from the sun. The film sets would revolve on platforms to assure a constant light from the sun above. Carefully positioned giant reflectors would be strategically placed to deflect the sunlight up onto the stages and thereby illuminate the scene and actors. While the reflectors were made in many sizes and shapes, the most popular was the 100 inch, or 'century', sized reflector. Stage assistant then created tools to aid them in the support of these 100" reflectors and invented what we now call C Stands."

    Another great reason to get a C stand and the quick release head is that is actually a lot less expensive solution than a Manfrotto tripod with an articulating head. Something to consider.
    Also I always thought C stands were named after the bottom legs which look like sideways C shapes and different from typical light stands. But I am guessing.

    The most important thing when working with your camera on a boom; is to have a cable release, the wobbling and oscillations of the camera can go on for 5 to 10 seconds before it settles down to "absolutely-still". All of the various stands, boom fittings and all the rest of it amount to a Meccano set; whatever fits; fits, there must be a thousand combinations of equipment you can use for overhead camera work, the critical thing is the camera is given time to go "absolutely-still". Best wishes.

    Thanks for making this video. I'm currently using a cheapy mic stand for my overhead and for 15 bucks it works (ish). Depending on where I am. If I'm on the one side of my kitchen/lab/studio it's fine but when I move to the work bench, that cheapy mic stand rocks, even with me putting a bag of peanuts on the other side and it's just time to upgrade. Well, save to upgrade - thanks for video. I like how sturdy yours is. When you pulled at it AND I like that extra space on the other side to hang stuff. Much, thanks. Happy Shooting.
