    2:53 holy hell that was the worst noise I've ever heard. I thought it was a fire alarm or something at first. Please don't include something like that again 😭

      I have to agree with this. All the sound effects in these "History of" videos are way too loud.

    Nice video!
    One bit of editing feedback, the bleeps and bloops you use frequently when sliding in a logo or footage get kinda distracting and obnoxious fairly quickly, I'd ether reduce the volume on them a lot, or heavily reduce the amount you use.

      Yea, I was gonna say this as well, I enjoyed the video, just thought the sound effects were a bit loud in a few places

      I shared this around and I'll make sure I like and comment on each history of so the YTA gets the boost.

    You didn't mention Ori and the Will of the Wisps, which took about everything from Blind Forest and cranked it up a notch. Granted, it's "only" a sequel but a damn near perfect one at that...

    0:45 It's more accurate to say that the term was used to describe the later Castlevanias that played like Metroid games by some reviewers, from around 2003 onwards. And less confusing since most of the early CVs are not MVs. CV2 was also inspired by Maze of Galious, also by Konami, rather than Metroid according to its director though I suppose the former could've been inspired by Metroid or Zelda (or Xanadu perhaps).
    This is a pretty good and well presented if shallow overview of the genre's history.

    Great video, skoottie! I am sure many hours of work goes into the research, graphics, and scripting for these videos, and it shows in the quality of your end product. Thank you!

    Great video, and for my personal favorite Metroidvanias it has to be either Super Metroid, Hollow Knight or Blaster Master 2. If I had to rank them it would be:
    1. Hollow Knight
    2. Super Metroid
    3. Blaster Master 2
    Also a shout-out to AM2R, Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow and Metroid Fusion.

    this was great! learned a bunch from this video :D I didn't really play these growing up so its interesting to see how they influenced the gaming industry

    A big chunk of this video is just quoted nearly verbatim from Wikipedia (especially the parts pertaining to metroid and Castlevania), yet leaves out mention of the game Shadow Complex which the article discusses between Cave Srory and Guacamelee. I also expected to at least see a mention of Konami's Maze of Galious which was a big influence on Castlevania II's open world design. This is less a "complete history" and more just a brief overview of the most popular titles in the genre.

    I enjoyed seeing the timeline of releases again. It feels like only yesterday that there were barely any new Metroidvania games, with GBA titles like Zero Mission and Aria of Sorrow feeling like the only places to get them. But then there was this surge, with Guacamelee and Axiom Verge opening the floodgates for me, and culminating in one of my favorite games of all time, Hollow Knight.

    As a kid, I never had the patience to backtrack in games, so I never really enjoyed them as much. But I might try to play Cave Story because it sounds amazing!

    • @TP3200
      @TP3200 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cave Story is a little odd to play today, but still very fun/unique. It's still partly a linear shooter rather than fully open, which can help the pace. The coolest thing about the game is probably that there are different endings, areas, and weapons that heavily encourage replaying the game and trying to get places you never saw when you first beat it.
      For this reason, I need to get back to it. I beat the game, yet never saw a lot of the coolest stuff.

      Cave Story is more of a Metroidvania-lite than a true Metroidvania. Another Game I can recommend for you to check out is Owlboy.

    I'd love for you to make more of these type of video's. This might be a personal opinion, but I feel like the sped up gameplay is a bit too fast, becoming kinda nauseating. Other than that, great work!

    The main problem is that you do ignore the vast differences between Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night. Fast talking is not an excuse.

    I think Montezuma's Revenge and even Pitfall II might be consider early exemples of metroidvania games. But, thanx for the video.

  • @niemand7811
    @niemand7811 ปีที่แล้ว

    No. metroidvanias are not a subgenre to action adventures. Action adventures are still action adventures. Haven't seen a subgenre to that other than what you call "rogue"-like. There you have it. Try not to explain something just to make it sound even more stupid to experienced and seasoned gamers. The nature of side scrolling games was that platforming was always a thing. At one point those were dubbed action games. And when you combine that with the adventure genre, what you get is "action adventure". Metroid and Legend of Zelda are exactly that: Action adventures. No "Vania" to be found. Also other action adventure from around that era did not have anything Vania. Castlevania remained pretty much its own entity and franchise for many many years. Even when Symphony of the Night hit the market, the Castlevania franchise kept its own identity. No Vania for no Metroid. And when you think that crafting a Castlevania game that features a map system like Super Metroid makes up for an entire "new" subgenre, you thought wrong and have been misguided for way too long. You just do not know how genres work. Not for visual art, not for music and not for video games. You just keep repeating what hundreds of people kept repeating for years now without second thought or a deeper research to understand why you are talking bullshit here in this video.
