  • Metroidvanias are great, but you know what's even better? A metroidvania that breaks the conventions of the genre. Today, we're focusing on three games that really think outside the box and get creative with their design. Hopefully this video will get you inspired to make your own metroid style game!
    I've been really busy this month; along with finishing up this episode, I've also been hard at work on my new game, GigaSword! I just took it to PAX East and had a blast. If you haven't seen the reveal video yet, you can watch it here: • I'm Making a Game! | G...

    The Blaster Master approach of creating a two-gameplay style mashup was actually quite common in the 80s and 90s.
    For example, on the Amiga their TMNT game had side-scrolling sections for sewers and within buildings while you traversed the city from a GTA-style top-down view where you could go on foot or drive the turtle van. In the arcades you had titles like Alien Storm that had side scrolling beat-em-up sections with on-rails shoot-em-up boss areas.
    It's something of a lost art these days with only titles like Nier:Automata attmpting to use this mash-up approach of keeping gameplay fresh and varied.

    Those are some very interesting twists on Metroidvania. Thank you so much for bringing them more attention. I've barely played games in the past 20 years ago I have a lot to catch up on. It's great to see so many indie titles doing interesting things.

    1:06 and here comes the next important bit. Character growth in the games. By the means of doing it the Zelda-Metroid way is to find items and upgrades with fixed values that do things in a very specific predifined way. But as in Symphony of the Night you "grow" your character strength and whatnot by levelling up through Experience Point Systems. That is very different.

    Not that the ideas won't be good or anything like that, but most of these are ideas that take a lot of effort and time to make. Combining those ideas would make the game very complex to develop and would take a lot of time to make. Indie game developers only have so much time and resources available so keep your scope manageable.

    Ninja Turtles was also like Zelda 2 in terms of the switch between top down world exploration and side scrolling levels. Also has the ability to switch Turtles with slightly different skills.

    I want a metroidvania with something similar to Xexyz. Its a 2d platformer where you can ride vehicles and it changes into shoot em up gameplay.
    I am happy that someone appreciates Blaster Master

    OMGGGGGGGGGGGGG i had that idea of a zelda game were you have to return the items in the dungeons and was really strugling how to design it because losing weapons is easy, but losing mobility equipment has way more impact in how the dungeons where to be designed, for example in zelda you can damage enemies with the hammer, boomerang bow and arrows, swords or bombs, se the enemies would not be a problem, but if certain walls can only be opened with the bomb that means you cant get rid of it early on, but making the dungeons persistent could make it possible to make a way in every dungeon before dropping the bomb, them opening the short cuts in every dungeon before getting rid of the hook and killing all the flying enemies before getting rid of the bow and arrow

    • @hybridplays1088
      @hybridplays1088  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's quite the conundrum for sure! After Hours works because of how short it is, but I can imagine how designing an 8 hour experience out of the idea could be a nightmare. Regardless, if one of us can figure it out someday, it could be really cool! Let me know if you end up pursuing it!

    Really great vid! (gonna have to check out Blaster Master now) I think one of my favorite "think outside the box" type Metroidvania game would be "Yoku's Island Express". It combines Metroidvania with Pinball. And it's such a blast to play XD

    I was thinking (inspired by Blaster Master and Metroid 3 + Zelda 3 Randomizer) to make a Metroidvania where you have two different perspectives - top down and side scrolling. You have the same skills though and you need to learn how to use them. The flying sandals in the side scrolling section might give you a double jump and in the top down might let you jump over big things or fly over rivers. The hookshot might let you swing in side scrolling or use it Zelda 3 like in top down. I want you to be able to switch perspectives on volition and have the items do slightly different things but the flavour there will be super important as it needs to communicate very intuitively how the item could be used. The player need to anticipate when they need to swap modes and it will be hard to do.

    • @hybridplays1088
      @hybridplays1088  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a really really cool idea. It kind of reminds me of Super Paper Mario in the way that you could switch perspectives whenever you want. Let me know if you end up pursuing this, cause if you do I'd love to play it!

    0:51 under that idea most RPG-Vaniasor IGAvanias are no metroidvanias by themselves. Cool. I had no idea you gonna reveal a non genres own weakness so fast. Because that description only fits actual action adventures like Metzroid games, of course, and Legend of Zelda titles, the Blaster Master series, games like Landstalker and Alundra, Beyond Oasis, Castlevania II, Battle of Olympus, Crystalis and others.

    I don't know if anyone did this yet... But I'm thinking about my idea, it's basically a Jrpg with a crafting system & a Main Protagonist which you can pick their gender, it won't alter the stats. But the second Protagonist is the opposite gender to the Main Protagonist.

    3:32 I thought this could've worked better if it wasn't so harsh; just 1-2 hits and the detour may not have been worth it is too much.
    There are plenty of hybrid playstyle/perspective games, though it's a bit less common in this genre. IIRC, Metroid Prime is already a FP/SV hybrid.
    After Hours and Allocation look cool.

    I wouldn't exactly call Cave Story "recent".
    As a huge fan of the genre, my favorites include Sentinels of the Multiverse, Metroid: Zero Mission, Cave Story, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, and Valdis Story: Abyssal City. On the other side of the spectrum, I was severely disappointed by Hollow Knight.

      @@hybridplays1088 if you want to know the one that did it best it was Black Ops 3
      The starting map had you turn into a Cthulhu monster to turn on each power switch, find three hidden symbols that you have to be on a hanging train to see, input those symbols into a wall, then then collect an egg, place it in four separate locations and kill about 25 zombies at each location, Bring it back so you can acquire a special sword, then go to the four characters special areas and summon a mini boss and kill it before the round ends, and then defend a flag and then go into the Cthulhu mode and have the train run underneath the giant monster and everyone electrocutes the train box.
      And that's just the map that's included with the game, there are four more DLCs (the last one I don't think was very good though) and my favorite one was Zetsubou No Shima (Go to three separate areas of the map to get many different things, shield for back protection, gas mask, Wonder weapon, Wonder weapon upgrade, and finish three challenges to finish the Easter egg step)
      If this is your first time hearing of it, you need to check it out (TH-cam tutorials are mandatory though)

    Reinventing metroidvania is impossible.
    1. the obvious. metroidvania as A genre does not exist but it is rather an umbrella term to collect different genres to make things seem easier for dumb people. it is pure game journalists garbage.
    2. if it was A genre you also need to reinvent the underlying genres. RPGs. Adventures. And most of all platformers. Good luck reinventing any of those. I played many genres covering a reach for decades over multiple console and PC generations.
    Super Metroid perfected the formula for its own franchise. Metroid Prime brought it into 3D without compromising anything. Symphony of the Night mixed up platforming with light RPG elements and kept going from here for several GBA and NDS titles.
    But games like Metroid and Zelda, starting their legacy on the NES, have come a long way. For people of today to lump it all together under one stupid umbrella term, it really has to take nerves to be so ignorant.
