Yeah there is so much available to me right in front of my door. I have been told the fishing right in front of the station is amazing due to the tides and currents in the area and the fact that there is a fish processing plant in the area that just dumps all the excess into the water, attracting all kinds of stuff.
You're a very lucky man. I'm in Japan currently, and lordy, is it expensive. Urchin is really good, especially in a light broth, but any way you eat it is still really tasty. I would recommend gloves and a spoon next time though.
I stepped on several urchins with both feet once when I was trying to get away from a large shark that was checking me out as I was trying to catch some waves. The spines went all the way through my feet and were pocking out the top of my feet. The barbs are one directional and had to be pulled out through the top of my feet. Al my feet were healing, puss would form under a thin layer of skin and then pop with a solid flow of stinky puss like a garden hose. Several times I was in the process of bending over to pop the bulging blister full of puss and by flexing my body in that position, it popped and hit between my eyes and hurt. That's how powerful the blast was. Another time I used my other foot to move the skin and it popped sending a solid stream about 12 feet straight up into the air. My friends would help me remove the stuff that came to the surface and clean my wounds for about a month till I was fully healed. The moral of this story is that you don't want to get poked by them.
Yeah Spence! I'm glad you enjoyed urchin. I've had some in Vancouver years ago at a Sushi bar. I wasn't a big fan but I'd give it another try after watching you. Keep the videos coming :) Mel
I have been told it is also depends on the time of year and the age of the urchin. The first one I ate was definitely better than the second one and I did not try the green one which as my Principal here said, is supposed to be even more tasty.
WTH!!!! dont you know Urchin lives matter? thought you were alone out there. good vid. Now i want to try some now. ya know, where you are bet you could easily get some sweet crab. the guys are getting them right off the dock here in Port Edward
The Principal here told me they used to go crabbing often when they had a boat on station. There are two places right around the corner that were quite good for crabs. Set the trap and 24 hours later have 10 or 12 good size crabs in the trap. We don't have a boat right now so can't go out and try it but eventually.....
There are always two keepers to a station. At Boat Bluff, I am the assistant keeper and then there is Howard, the Principal Keeper. We are both on station all the time. it is done this way for safety reasons and to be sure there is always someone around in case of an emergency.
I would definitely would be trying to gather food from the ocean so many things i haven't tried but hey its 20ft outside your door why not and it would be fresh lol
Rock fish are super easy to catch and if you are into Salmon fishing then there isn't a better spot for it. Rock fish are so easy to get here, the dog catches them from the shore for food.
Keep up the great videos! 👍
Thanks, will do!
The bountiful sea around you. I have never tried urchin, but some day will give it a try. Good to be open to new experiences. Thanks for video.

I have heard the cost of Urchin can be quite a bit. A broth sounds pretty good. I may have to try that one!

well, that sounds like an experience I would not like to go through myself. Thanks for sharing.

I've never thought of eating urchin but I'm going to try it after this video
I never thought I would be eating Urchin! Not something I would eat every day but still pretty good for a treat.
The dark purple ones are sweeter
I will have to try them as well! haha.
Nice one, keep it up, I’m still kind of confused actually, are you the head keeper or the assistant?
I am the assistant Keeper and Howard is the Principal, who has been Principal of Boat Bluff since 2010.
