What complexion? I keep trying to understand. They showed only newborn Carlos in this clip, not him as an adult. Literally it’s supposed to be first hour or second of his life. Why so many are talking about complexion?
Babies are always born with less melanin as their parents. Even in Africa and India newborns are lighter than Mom and Dad and over the course of a couple months their melanin increases and skin becomes darker - the way they will likely look the rest of their lives.
Also, you are talking about a portrait that is almost 500 years old. It was painted in 1548. They used natural pigments for all colors. And over a few decades the pigment was turning darker as opposed to what it looked like in the year when the portrait was finished. Restoration can only clean of the layer of dust, dirt, organic matter off a painting. And usually the colors become lighter and brighter. The pigment itself, however, is impossible to lighten up and restore to its original shades of color without destroying the work of art itself.
That’s why most of medieval portraits look so dark - the pigment oxidized over 500+ years.
So, I would compare Carlos’ V complexion to that portrait either. It’s a big question the pigment was exactly right in the first place. Let alone 450+ of this pigment oxidizing and getting dirty.
