Beautiful video. Damn, how much I wish for a series about Sebastian. I think the house of Aviz is such an overlooked dynasty, yet so interesting. Thanks God we have series like "Isabel " and "Carlos Rey Emperador" because it is nice to see dynasties other than the Tudors.
REALLY REALLY GREAT VIDEO. Just one thing. After Sebastian I death; his uncle; Henry I “the cardinal” (John’s III brother) became King. He couldn’t have legitimate children either getting married (and The Pope didn’t let him because of Philip II orders). So when he died (in a couple of years) it’s when Philip II became King of Portugal.
There were other candidates as well.Among others , Dom António, Prior do Crato, Luis de Avis, duke of Beja´s illegitimate son, who had most of the people ´s support but not of the nobility and the clergy who supported Filipe. (Rumour had it and t seems it was a fact that Filipe had paid bribes to the clergy and part of the nobility to support him).Dom António was defeated in the battle of Alcantara and fled. In Azores he was still recognized as king of Portugal for several years. This was just an historical note on the matter.
Couldn´t help it. I just had to comment on this one. This "inbreeding " was a kind of political plan to make a joint royal house that would rule Iberia.Portugal went along with the plan after king Manuel got to the throne when the kingdom became rich beyond belief with the spice trade .( Before, the kingdom avoided marriages with spanish princesses, usually Aviz princes and princesses married among each other to prevent dangerous situations like the one that brought the Burgundian dynasty to an end). king Manuel wanted to play the main role in the process, certainly ignoring that Spain wanted to play the main part too. The process ended with Filipe II / I of Portugal getting the portuguese throne after his nephew , Dom Sebastião , died in the battle of Alcacér Quibir, leaving no heirs.Portuguese historians point out that Filipe said when he got Portugal: " I inherited, I bought it and I conquered it". Filipe I is considered to be a good and kind king to the portuguese. In fact he kept all the promises he made when he was crowned king of Portugal.( Portugal was to remain an independant kingdom , but it had the same king as the neighbouring spain) However his followers soon forgot those promises and the fact that Olivares had convinced Filipe IV/ III to make Portugal a province of Spain , caused the portuguese nobility to revolt. It ´s really Interesting to notice that both kingdoms/countries had a similar trajectory but sometimes great rivalry in the development of each country´s history. P.S : Thank you for your videos. They are very interesting.
Catherine of Austria (Joanna's daughter) was named after her aunt, Catherine of Aragon. Joanna may be crazy but she's not stupid. She haven't forgotten her little sister and people who made her miserable especially her father, son, and husband.
Manuel I was not elderly when he married Leonor he was 49 and died at 52, unless you consider that age as being already elderly of course. Another thing Ferdinand of Aragon was the cousin of second degree removed of Isabel of Castilla. Also Felipe ii was not the first heir to the Portuguese throne, it was his cousins Maria of Avis and infanta Catarina de Avis, Duchess of braganza who had the better claim but Felipe ii made the children of Maria, the Farnese, to abdicate their claim, Catarina didn’t do that, however, she had no power to fight against the Hasburgs so Felipe ii was able to take the Portuguese crown by force. This will later one counteract as Catarina grandson become the king of Portugal Joao iV. Another thing that is important is that Portuguese kings wanted to unite the Iberia peninsula under their crown, is not that Portugal was against an union, the problem was who was gonna rule it, the Portuguese kings didn’t want Castilla kings to rule them. This why Afonso V try to rule Castilla and Portugal by his marriage to Joana and Joao ii insist on marrying Isabel to his son Afonso so they can join all their crowns and then later Manuel I try the same by marrying with Isabel.

I wanted to say his heirs , not followers.
¡Thank you for the info!
@@lonelyqueenofhearts7030 I was conveying the main view among portuguese historians concerning this issue.
Would you like more videos about this topic with other houses/countries?
I would love to know more about other royal houses.
Yes. This video was quite fascinating.
Yes please! If you did some Egyptian Royal Family Trees I'll really be impressed!😃
Their greatest foe they couldn't conquer.
Inbreeding?
@@Isabella2335. Yes.
I wouldn´t say enemy. I would say rival, at least concerning the trajectory of both countries concerning their empires.
Genetics.
