A small historical fact, the Maumau war was started due to land policy in Tigoni. It was the catalyst for the Maumau war. In the forties, the original land owners were expelled and moved to a drier poor area called Lari, so as to create a village for white military officers. The chief, Luka wa Karuri, took most land in the new village for himself and family. So in October, the Maumau had their first attack supported by the local population and it is known as the Lari massacre, where the chief and family were killed. The colonial government then declared a state of emergency. So Tigoni, is mostly owned by white families who benefited from colonial land policy.
*Luka wa Kahangara*. The mau mau uprising had already started before the Lari massacre. The trigger of the 1952 state of emergency declaration was the murder of loyalist Chief Waruhiu, after that of a British woman a week prior. The Lari massacre didn't happen until the following year. Tigoni is NOT "mostly owned by white families" -- the majority left at independence. The only remaining families are less than 5. > 95% land ownership is black Kenyans. My parents' house and land was formerly owned by a white colonialist.
Lari was white owned too. Luka probably lived there because he was a colonial chief. An 82 year old Kikuyu man told me that Lari was out of bounds for black people
