Kanunga and turito are still laid back but Kawaida surprising is way way ahead of the neighboring towns, insecurity was once a major setback in these towns and if that could be well taken care off and a sign of new infrastructure going that way even the sleepy towns would arise and be full of life..thanks for the presentations
Woow am feeling nolstagic. This reminds me of those beautiful old days when we used to walk from Muchatha to Kiambu town via Turitu passing through those beautiful coffee plantations. Admin please consider giving us a tour of Muchatha and the surrounding areas.
THIS IS VERY INTERESTING AND AN EYE OPENING DOCUMENTARY ON I Explored more DEAD Towns in Rural Kiambu, This is What I Saw! | Kanunga, Kawaida, & Turutu
Well over two decades ago I had the opportunity of visiting some of these places in the course of my work......and indeed similar locations in other areas of what we used to refer to as Central Province....the story is the same.. general desolation is the apt common denominator....and this extend further afield nation wide.....and one major contributing factor..... INSECURITY....an endemic cancer that has proved incurable!!
My late Dad started his life around this area. He in fact started his career in that very school, Kanunga High School where he also got his first born, our big brother. Once while heading from a funeral of one of his cousins (He was then 60 something years old as was his late cousin) he told happened to comment on those u shape centres (kambe). He said that nearly everyone who owned those shops in those centers never made anything out of those businesses. The lucky few were those who educated their children, A few others moved their businesses to larger towns, like Kiambu, banana , ruiru etc and prospered. Many however spent the 2 decades after independence basically sunning themselves and observing the world pass them by in their sheltered verandas. By the mid 1980's most of those shopping centres were dead. There are hundreds of these little kambes all over central.
Meaning of 'Kanunga' in kikuyu please. Then kuna this gishagi gia Kawaida and namba kumi. Hehehe. Just the other day we had a feature that made guys like myself here that the late kikuyu musician one Bw RugwitibWa Njeri hails from this place...a place called Muchatha between Banana and Rwaka.
@danielkiruri4882 i went to kamaus place every day and the Yellow building at kanunga used to be a hotel we used to go to listen to reggae time every Thursday mornings 🤣🤣
I believe demographics are playing a part.I was in rural Embu and the place is also abandoned. The 80s-90s generations are having 2 kids.Kenya's latest population trend is to peak at 65- 70 million people according to the Lancet and it seems very accurate to my observation of friends and neighbors. Once we reach there it will be over if we haven't industrialized...which most likely we wont because of the recent 2013-to date government policy of attacking industry to keep Kenya an agrarian economy with some bright spots like IT outsourcing of back end lower end jobs(soon to be replaced by AI)
Let me give you an example with me : I was born in Gatundu South my guka had a 12 acres of land, and as you know Kikuyus are opportunists so when I was in first yr my parents bought their own land in kitegela that was 2013 because then the lands there were Cheap unlike today since it was desert 😂 so by 2015 we had built and settled there , my dads 2 brothers bought theirs at mwihoko in 2014 and one in Nanyuki in 2016 . So my father’s father gen shop that was in our shopping center together with the single rooms for rental was left for guka 😂 . My dad and his brothers who were supposed to develop that land went to other places and developed there but they still say their roots is in kiambu because their fathers land is still there and my parents have never heard them talking about the structures in kambi that one maybe we demolish it all and build another new building because last time that was opened was last 3 yrs because after my grandparents died the rentals and the gen.shop was closed so those Tulare towns especially those in kiambu county will remain ghost town labda shamba ziache kuuzawa sababu wakikuyu na mashamba 😂
"The question is where did they go? When shall this community oxodus end? You find them in every corner of the republic, my question is why are they not proud of their region? Thank you! Will do!
Wonderful commentary loved the video
Glad you enjoyed it
These are some of the most expensive lands in Kenya, the Kiambu, Rwaka, Banana Limuru, Kabete belt is insanely expensive.
True!
But land value hit all highs after the bypasses came passing along Ruiru,Rwaka and other spots.
Most rural small towns and shopping centre are downgraded since the disappearance of coffee boom of 1970s.
Well avocado is chipping in but not yet.
Great insight
Good job bro,Kawaida has really developed.Big up.
