When Greenlaning Goes Wrong! (Freelander 2 Focus) - A Video by Joel Self - Outdoor Instructor

  • A quick jaunt along a 1km byway takes an unexpected turn. An hour or more later and with the landy suffering some war-wounds this was a good lesson to have, makes you think and reflect on how blasé we can be about driving our local lanes that we regularly enjoy! Best not to get over confident and comfortable! I hope you enjoy the video and can pick out the good, bad and ugly from how I handled this trip!

    Thanks for sharing this video!!
    It happened similarly to me ,once I went down a water stream just to find out that it was blocked !!!
    Luckily I was able to reverse and get the hell out of there.
    We should never go by ourselves(But....) and we should have all recovery gear ,as well as food, water and a thermal blanket just in case...plus CB radio , flashlight.
    Take care Joel ....Great video

    Great vid Joel. Been there myself with just the fam in the car going up the top pet of ringspit lane Whitchurch and got near the top only to find a big tree blocking the way and it was dark too so had to reverse back down the hill. That was fun not😂

    Good vid. I often go laning alone. Its not advised though.Been there ..got myself stuck a few times. I always go so far then get out ..walk ..assess the situation. Take note of safe places to turn if need be. If you do get stuck..dont panic..dont rush. Your not going anywhere. Again assess the situation. With use of your winch and a couole of snatch blocks you would have got her turned. I have front winch but always carry my old tirfor aswell. Glad you got it out with minor damage. A lesson to us all. Even us old boys that have been laning for 30 odd yrs..lol😅👍👍👍

    Hello again, Joel! I spoke with you on the Forum some time ago and was then based in Portland, OR USA with my 2011 3.2i6. I have just moved back to the UK and of course I had to sell my FL2. I ran into some trouble finding a good on here that was at acceptable milage and in good condition. I ended up having to buy a Discovery Sport as the next closest thing. People have really battered the FL2s it seems. I'd really hoped to have another, but it wasn't to be. At some stage I will have to do a trip with you guys. I will soon have all my gear over from the US, and will then be up for some camping and some driving trips. I won't be able to put mine through the punishment you do, because its going to be my only car for a while and wasn't cheap, but I will be taking it offroad and camping wherever it can take me.

    Good effort. It’s a shame you damaged your drivers side mirror. You could have had my mismatched passenger side one as and when I find a gen2 version.

    @lexiedennis9991 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hiya Joel, bad luck about the mirror. I guess you know you can press both mirror buttons simultaneously and they'll both fold in like when you park? Might give you a few extra mils in a tight spot, temporarily. Well done for getting out in the end, not an easy reverse for sure!

    Outstanding. Thank you for taking the time to video the adventure as it was obviously another thing to deal with. I was pondering whether deploying the winch may have made a difference (I need an excuse for a winch) either in pulling the tree aside or assisting in pulling your front end around?

    • @JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor
      @JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Unfortunately John (though a few folks have mentioned I should have used the winch) it wouldn't have been helpful here. Winching the front end around would have simply pulled the front bumper off, as what you Unfortunately cant see in the video is in my attempts to turn around each time my front end is just starting to catch on the bank, continuing past the point I did would have resulted in taking it off, whether driven or winched.
      In honesty my most likely approach with the winch would have been to winch nose up into the same area, that would have worked, but it would have been an incredibly longwinded multi-reset winch recovery, and in reality far more dangerous than simply reversing.
      A winch is a brilliant tool and we shouldn't be afraid to use them but we do need to ensure we risk assess appropriately. And deploying the winch, using snatch blocks and making what I guessed would be about 4 resets would have been a less sensible solution than reversing. Especially given I had time and light on my side on this occasion. Had I been loosing light I may have considered it. - But if it was dark I would have slept there, as mentioned, I carry all the kit to ensure I can live with my mistake and dont feel rushed into trying to self recover. Hope that makes sence 😁👍🚜

    What's best : Auto or Manual for green laning?
    Cheers!

    Golden rule of green landing. NEVER go alone and always be equipped to deal with obstacles like fallen trees.

    • @JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor
      @JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While I agree going in Convoy is certainly recommended, I don't think a hard and fast 'NEVER' can really be applied in this situation. Bare in mind many lanes are graded flat gravel track, lots of folks, myself included have to use the lanes to access work venues etc. The problem with any 'hard' rule like that is there is always an exception or edge case where it would be impractical, overkill or actually cause more problems. What I would have wanted here, would be a passenger, not another vehicle and driver. Just somone to help spot me back.
      As for having the kit to deal with these kinds of problems, 100% agree. Saw, first aid kit, recovery gear, tools, water, food, sleeping equipment etc was all being carried. 👍

      Keep a cool head and take it steady. I did my wing-mirror in the first 3meters because I was rushing. The rest of the way back was very calm and steady. No dramas. 👍

    Could you not of reversed past the turning point and then drove into it forwards and then reverse out of it to do the turn, if you see what i mean.

    Is there anyone you would notify? Lane organisations/local authority?

    • @JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor

      Local Authority notified and a freind of the farmer who's fields are accessed from the lane. 👍
