  • This video is the conclusion to our ABS Issue Diagnosis video on the same vehicle. In the previous video, we walked through diagnosing this ABS issue without using high dollar equipment, and only using the diagnostic equipment we purchased for under $150. The goal was to show that you can diagnose these issues without the fancy equipment... so I'm also going to show you that the wheel bearing can be removed and replaced without special tools, they just make it a lot easier.

    I watched a few videos of this task and you by far looked liked you knew what you were doing to me compared to the other videos you knew what you had to do to get it done, and your narration of the video definitely made you look like you were doing in my opinion

    I can't tell you how much I would have loved to bust out the Air Hammer and drive this wheel bearing out... But, I hope this video helps you guys out and thanks for taking the time to check it out.

    Thanks for the detailed vid. It took me about an hour of working it with a hammer and I was going to give up well before that since most videos show it coming out immediately but this video motivated me to keep going. Happy to say I am back up and running.

    Thank you for this tutorial, it made changing out my hub bearing assembly a no-brainer! I was done in 2 1/2 hours start to finish. 2007 explorer. 184,000 miles.

    After doing this myself, one improvement I'd suggest is popping the center cover off the wheel and removing the spindle nut before you remove the wheel or jack it up. Also, while brand of socket might not be critical, it is important to use thick-walled impact sockets for the hard to remove bolts. I busted a Craftsman standard socket in the process of removing the three hub bolts with a breaker bar- cheap impact socket had no trouble taking the pressure.

    Nice work, friend. That is a job for sure....I understand the steps you took to do this, but I won't be trying it. I'm 73. Taking it to my local mechanic to do but at least I will have a good understanding of how it should be done...

    Great job in explaining everything we all need to know to go ahead with doing the job the right way..another thing I wanted to say was I seen a youtuber use a 32 Inch pipe wrench to the top of the bearing hitting the end and loosening the bearing from its socket with a couple hits (worked great)...also seen a (bearing buster) tool for $100 bucks for a quick wack and off goes the bearings..I know yours is a good (dont have any extra special tools thing) but incase people run into what you and I are gonna run into messing with our bearings at home lol... there is help out there in doing the job alot easier....thanks man....

    If we're replacing the whole wheel bearing hub assembly, we probably don't need to worry about damaging the lug nut studs ;)

    Great video. This is about the 10th I watched. Have to do this for 02 Mountaineer. I would advise to put on some anti-seize over the axle and bearing and along the knuckle you grind down. Great job hope mines come off easier.

    I just replaced this knuckle, and had to cut off one of the three hub bolts. Three days to get the old hub off, 1 hr to put the new hub on.

    THANK YOU! I'm going to do this this weekend, same wheel/vehicle.
    Question: Is there ANY other method I can use to remove the hub? Other than hammering and stressing for an hour?

  • @JimLambier
    @JimLambier 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I also have the 2010 Explorer and have needed to do this job three times now. I'm in Canada and the rust bond between the hub and knuckle is awful. Even using air hammers and slide hammers didn't make this an easy job. One thing that I would recommend is using anti-seize before installing the new bearing. If you need to do the job again I will be much easier.

    I love how my 3 bolts to take this bearing out are like a 22 size and I barley have room due to it’s the rear and an explorer 😕

  • @nooknerdz

    What about replacing the actual bearing...instead of the entire hub assembly? That was the title of this video, but NOT what is demonstrated. The price on the hub assembly is crazy high. Is it just that difficult to replace just the bearing?

    • @DIYAutoHomeschool
      @DIYAutoHomeschool  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry if I didn't communicate it well enough. On these vehicles, and many vehicles now, the wheel bearing is not serviceable separate from the hub assembly. You cannot disassemble the hub, put a new bearing in, and reassemble and install it.
      When the wheel bearing is bad, this is the only part you can get to replace it.
      Thank you for taking the time to watch the video and comment, and I'm sorry I didn't clearly communicate the fact that this is the bearing assembly.

      A complete hub assembly with sensor is now $35. Not sure how much it was a year ago.

  • @jerryjamify

    Why can't you use an air hammer on the bolts

  • @mackmjm82

    How many hours did this job take total for you?

    • @DIYAutoHomeschool
      @DIYAutoHomeschool  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly, I don't remember exactly. I know it took longer than I'd have expected. I was trying to show that it could be done without an air hammer and other special tools. I think getting the hub out was like an hour or so of hammering.

      Your video is great. I have an air compressor and a bunch of air tools but still liked your video to see another way. And I really appreciate you responding wasn’t sure you would since this video was from a year ago.

    After doing all that work with next to no effort with no rust like at all how are you going to sit there and say that sensor is that corroded it's not going to come out lol after you break it

    The correct way to do that job is to remove the knuckle then press the bearing hub out. Once that's out you simply press the old bearing out and press the new one in. If you don't have the correct tools to do this, then have someone do it for you!!! This video proves this!!! Jesus Christ, one needs to choose their battles correctly!!! Also, quit smoking then you won't be running out of breath the way you are!!!
