In today’s video, I’ll makeover my ordinary patio in the Midwest with the charming elements associated with a traditional English cottage garden (with a blue chinoiserie theme), and I’ll do it on a budget. I’ll be using a number of thrift store finds and a few Dollar Tree items. Some of my DIY projects include repurposing thrift store finds to create a unique water feature, water fountain, wind chime, bird feeder, and wall decor. I hope you’ll be inspired to create your own secret garden in whatever outdoor space you have!

I always wonder if my American idea of an English garden is on point. I know that I need more climbing plants and some taller flowers. I am working on this still! Please, share your thoughts when you finish watching.

It’s actually very close, the plant selections are really good, it’s not as warm and sunny here, but I don’t think that matters. Your patio area looks great, and I love the pebble butterfly’s, I’m trying that myself

♥ This Brit-American with a bit of French, Scottish/Irish on my maternal side loves anything English or French! An Anglophile as well as Francophile.English teas, gardens and cottages! Thankfully, my new home a two bedroom/one bath apt has the look and feel of an old English cottage! And a little like the cabin in the movie "On Golden Pond" minus the pond though there are plenty of ponds and lakes around as well as the ocean only a half hour away! The majestic mountains about an hour away. Heaven on Earth, something we can all aspire to! Former retired fashion illustrator in NYC and floral designer.🌻🥀♥

      How lovely is this!
I'm English and have an English cottage garden. Yours is beautiful thank you for sharing your ideas ❤
I'm not sure what will grow in your climate but I have amongst others lavenders and honeysuckle (great for bees and other pollinators) also roses but the uk climate is changing and our roses are suffering blackspot mildew and rust. I also add mirrors to my garden and patios to trick the eye. Geums, Aquilegia (granny's bonnet) are great cottage garden flowers tall and repeat flowering as are any of the taller daisy families.
Love this video and I've shared it with friends.

I found out if you have metal outdoor furniture, if you wax with car wax it makes the metal look new. It looks so nice and is protected by the wax. Im going to try it. I have an English garden in my backyard. Spring brings the most beautiful plants and flowers that I can make arrangements for my home. So blessed. The wax would work on your gazebo too.

What I’ve always liked about your videos is how you show the “mechanics” of your projects so I can see how you’ve put things together. For instance, in this video when you glued the head back onto the garden statue you used painters tape to secure it while it was drying… something I never would have thought to do. Thanks for generously sharing your ideas❤

I live in England and have a cottage garden .We keep the lawn and patio tidy but the rest anything goes. The birds bring in seeds and at the moment we have cowslips forget me nots and foxgloves none of these we planted. It is always interesting to walk round to see what else has appeared. Sadly concrete slabs and gravel seem to be the most popular type of garden now. They don't know what they are missing. Mr fox like visiting, so keep the English garden alive well done Sherry.

Starting with that beautiful brick wall and green backdrop was perfect. It really set the stage with blue pool water in the background . My theory for planters is a Papa bear, Mama bear and a Baby bear . Staggering heights is visually pleasing. And mixing foliage and flowers really add interest. The blue rug is so pretty with the pillows , throws and chinoiserie pots . The fountain was my favorite, and I love the black bench. You have so much fun creating. Its a gift for sure.

Sherri, those cypress trees would benefit from pruning off the brown bits. After I trim the dead branches off as close to the live wood as possible, I take a garden hose with the nozzle on a high pressure jet setting and turn it on the brown areas of my trees every year or so. The water pressure knocks the ugly brown “needles” right off. Of course it will make a bit of a mess to clean up but the trees will look better and have room on the branches for fresh green growth.

Great idea using extra hostas in containers! They always need dividing. Succulents need good drainage, so if your container doesn’t have drainage holes, try planting them in a plastic nursery pot and put that in the container. You can remove the plastic pot when you water and let it drain.

I elevated a solar landscape “coach” light from a set purchased at Aldi’s in my front garden by sticking a black metal curtain rod in the ground and then putting the light in the top. I also set up decorative hose plant protectors by inserting metal curtain rods in the ground to keep the hose from dragging through the plants as I water the garden. I look for ones with decorative finials which sort of look like pretty metal flowers.

Hi Sherri, every area of your patio is exciting. My favorite DIY on the patio is the clock with the hanging flowers. 2nd is the chandelier bird cage with the white birds. Love ❤️ your videos. You are amazing.

It’s so beautiful! I’m glad everyone is safe. I live in KS so I feel your pain. My childhood home was destroyed in a 🌪️. It was awful.
I love your videos and charming home and beautiful gardens. ❤

You have made such a charming, inviting place to be. I love the wall hanging with the birdhouses - so cute. And the water feature with all the rocks that you put some plants in were among my favorites. You did a great job, Sherri!

    1) I have only been subscribed to your channel since around Christmas, so I'm not sure that I had yet learned that you're in Illinois. That's where I grew up and I have such a soft spot for it. It's funny because I already felt like your channel was a breath of home, and now I have that confirmed. 😄
    2) You probably know that English Ivy is invasive, so please be careful how you dispose of it if it dies back.
    3) I can't clearly see your little plant that survived the winter, but something about it reminded me of a chocolate mint plant I had as a teen. Sweet and nostalgic.
Thanks for another cozy and cheerful video! ♥️

You make everything come together effortlessly and it is so unique. I’m sure you were and excellent English teacher but I am so grateful that you decided to pursue this part of you 😊

Thank you! Yes, I will! They are so lovely. I always cross my fingers that we won’t get a rain storm after they bloom because then they end up on the ground. ☹️

@@CanterburyCottage *Sherry, my Mom had the same trouble, but she solved it by opening up 2 tall tomato cages (per peony plant) and spray painted them green. She attached the 2 tomato cages together by joining them (on the long side) with green zip ties. Then she snipped off a few of the horizontal pieces off of the tops (the narrow side of the tomato cage) and pressed the wires at least 6 inches into the ground, wrapping the tomato cage around each peony plant in the shape of an ice cream waffle cone - with the pointed end near the ground and the larger part at the top - with the peony branches flowing out. Once the leaves 🍃 fill in and the blossoms bloom, you don't see much of her tomato cages. She also had one of my brothers pound in a couple of rebar stakes near the back of the tomato cages, closest to her house, to give them more stability and to keep them from blowing over in the particularly windy storms we have here in Minnesota. 😊 I hope this idea is helpful to you, Sherry❣️🌺🍃*
