  • Lisa Gade reviews the HP Elitebook X360 1030 G3, the 13.3” Windows 10 convertible laptop business counterpart to HP’s Spectre x360. The design and premium styling are very similar to the early 2018 Spectre x360, but the business model gets a few perks like optional 4G LTE Advanced, several security features, more ports than the latest gen Spectre x360, a Wacom AES pen and an optional privacy screen that’s enabled at the press of a button. The 2-1-in1 convertible Ultrabook has 360 degree hinges, a metal body, backlit keyboard, USB-C and Thunderbolt 3, a Microsoft Precision trackpad and your choice of Intel 8th generation Kaby Lake R Core i5 and i7 quad core CPUs. It’s available with bright FHD and 4K displays.

Wow....a really bright screen and dual fan cooling make this a sooper compelling choice knowing summer is always coming here in Las Vegas. Strange the things that influence people's choices beyond OS or brand. Thanks for this. Your content is consistently on a higher level.

Thank you for covering this laptop Lisa and fantastic review as always. I recently returned a Spectre (bought for business use) and found the thermal throttling was appalling despite the fan spinning up regularly so it's great to see the better cooling solution and cinebench variance with the Elitebook. One thing not covered in the review is how well the trackpad integrates with Windows. I found the driver used with the Spectre doesn't support Windows precision features (e.g. three finger swipe to change desktop). Personally I found the palm detection with the Spectre overly aggressive and it would appear to lockup until I'd adjusted the smartsense configuration manually.

The level of conciseness and detail in your videos are phenomenal. I also love you get right to the point. I do wish some of the terms were described a little more in Laypeople terms. Not a critique. Just an observation. Thanks for making the daunting process of navigating buying a new laptop in what seems like a sea of endless options more digestible and easier. New Subbie! 👍🏼

Looking forward to your review and opinion on that particular product.. I have an attraction to get that product, design and power, all in one.. All that's missing is..A review from Lisa to give it a thumbs up go ahead.. Without that I'll look at her other recommendations.. Take care Lisa and have a nice day...

    some Questions, thanks in advance:
which one should I buy/choose for my clevo chasis with GTx1060 (as GPU is bottleneck then): 8700t 35W with 325$ or similar performance, i5 8600 but 65W with 224$? the reason I am asking is to get more battery life, and do you happen to know/saw any estimation on how many more hours I could get by using nearly half Wat CPU?
and it would work, right? a 35W CPU in 65W TDP Socket CPU?
    again thanks

Got this baby about a week ago and I'm really impressed. It was between this one and an X1 Yoga, but BIOS and battery life issues as well as mixed keyboard experiences steered me away from Lenovo this time around. It's got one of the best touchpads as far as Windows machines go and it's one of the few that don't make me reach for a mouse right away. The display is stunning despite the mediocre view angles (probably due to the SureView feature) and the battery life has been great so far.
Unfortunately, not all of the bloat software is useful. After troubleshooting non-working Windows updates for hours on end I finally got it working by uninstalling SureClick. Also, whoever thought removing the clip from pens needs to be shot. Another thing Apple started and immediately everyone else followed.
I have no idea who'd be bothered by that tiny friggin clip, but I sure as hell can tell you that it's really annoying when you wear a shirt or jacket and have no way of storing that pen properly. The only solution was to buy the older Active Pen on top of the one that comes with it. That said, the older pen comes with a nice AAAA battery as well and won't bother you with charging year-round. I guess the move to rechargeable pens came from the same guy who removed the clip. May he rot in hell.

@@reneealams Hi, if you got yourself a SureView screen, it would be normal that it's a bit more grainy. That seems to be due to the privacy function that lets you keep out prying eyes that try to look at your screen slightly off-angle.

Cheers Lisa another great review. I had the G2 for a couple of weeks and call me picky but I didnt like it as the edges are SHARP! I liked the device but I use a tablet on site a lot and these small things can be a deal breaker. The one that I received had a line in the screen so I got a refund for it. I ended up with a Lenovo x1 yoga gen 2 which I love;-))

I'm sorry I'm italian and I have some difficulties understanding everything... concerning 4g/lte nano sim port, is it included in ALL model, or ONLY when there's the WWAN antenna? I ask this because in the italian store, it's specified that there's the port for the sim, but the antenna is not mentinoed. I asked the store and it seems they replys without really knowing what I need to know!!!!! The matter is that in italy we do not have the possibility to customize, so it's impossibile to understand this before getting the product.

Hey, I've got question. I cannot decide between buying the HP Elite-book x360 1030 G3 (700 nits FHD display) with an core i7 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD or the Surface Laptop (gen 1) with an i7 (+ Intel plus graphics 640) 16 GB RAM and 512 GB. They both go for 999 Euros. IO is not that important for me (i don't need USB C Thunderbolt) as I only use USB A of which both only have one. So that's a tie for me. And the 360º hinge is nice but i wouldn't use it at all as i don't use the pen. (I'm a student). Plus, I love the color burgundy and in general the surface laptop design (much more than the one on the hp). The surface Laptop has my favorite keyboard in any Laptop. I'd also like to play small games form time to time (e.g. Minecraft), but i think both are good enough when it comes to something like this, right?

I can't comment on the Spectre line but the Elitebook line has been very reliable for the company I work for. We don't have a ton of these, maybe 15 being used, but I do know over 5+ years of various versions of Elitebooks we've never replaced one because it died. They were either stolen or just too old. I just replaced my 6 year old 8460P with the G2 versions of the laptop in this review. It was quite the upgrade for me.
I do hate this trend of thinner, lighter which inevitably means less repairable. I was able to upgrade the processor on my 8460P because it was socketed! A socked CPU in a laptop is unheard of. Too bad this ins't the case for the newer Elitebooks.

I do like this Elitebook. I am not a fan of these 2 in 1 type of laptops. I highly enjoy my Latitude 5491 with the more powerful i5 8400h and Nvidia graphics. Yeah sure probably not as portable and I wouldn't call it a gaming laptop by any stretch but as a power users laptop it does make even the XPS 13 seem a little more ordinary. What I do like about this 2 in 1 here however is the far more powerful CPU. Dells 2 in 1 currently don't offer a U series cpu to my knowledge and so this is a more appealing unit. Plus I love the build quality. HP has always impressed me with their use of aluminum, and at one time Dell had this tri-metal design that for a time outshined it slightly, but now their cases are made from magnesium much like the Thinkpads. Don't get me wrong, that stuff is tough. But it's not as premium looking or feel as aluminum. It's a shame given the high price points of these laptops.

Great keyboard, not a fan of the screen when on battery, seems dim even when brightness on max and screen guard off. Built in speakers are excellent 👍

The current styling/features of the Elitebook X360 line is more to my liking. I really don't like the design of the latest HP Spectre X360's.
While the Spectres still look nice, and I like the angled ports on the clipped corners, HP got rid of the volume rocker on the side of the device. Having a volume rocker in the side of a convertible laptop is a huge selling point for me. When watching videos on a convertible laptop in tablet or display mode, I hate having to touch the screen to tweek the volume up or down a bit.

@@sakadabara HP Spectre X360 4k 15 inch touch 2018 model. I got it custom upgraded with some extra storage and RAM.
The upgraded components weren't faulty tho, those were checked and it ended up being an OEM component.
I'm just glad HP seems to be giving me speedy service, it's being sent over to get repaired rn.. I'm hoping to hear back soon

@Large Marche So HP ended up fixing the motherboard, and everything was fine until 2 weeks later the screen starting flickering like crazy (like it was having some sort of seizure).
So since I ordered the laptop through CUK (computer upgrade king), I called them first and told them the issue as all warranty request are handled through them if purchased from them and not directly from HP.
This is where things got complicated because one of their employees incorrectly instructed me to just contact HP and have them deal with it (the proper procedure would have been to have it sent to CUK first so they can sort out the warranty request and what not).
So I did that and my warranty was voided because of them telling me to do that, because HP saw that my computer had been upgraded by CUK, and apparently what CUK does when handling warranty request is they have you send the computer to them first so they swap out the upgraded components with the original manufacturer's components-
But that never happened because one of their employees blundered and mistakenly told me to go through HP first- so they effectively caused my warranty to be voided and at this point I was extremely frustrated as HP was now charging me $500 to replace an LCD cable because they found third party components in the computer.
They were trying to blame the third party components for the screen flickering (which was not at all the case, as the malfunctioning part was an original HP part AGAIN).
I made sure CUK knew that they inadvertantly caused me to void my warranty and to my relief they agreed that they made a mistake and took my laptop in for service and replaced the LCD cable free of charge.
My complaint is how long the whole process took and the fact that another HP original part malfunctioned not even 2 weeks after being repaired, it took well over two weeks for me to get my laptop because HP refused to service it unless I paid $500. So I obviously refused to pay and they sent the laptop back to me and then I sent the laptop to CUK, where it took over a week to get repaired because the LCD cable was on back order.
Owning this laptop has been a very roller coaster like experience with lots of ups and downs- but mostly downs. However in all fairness CUK did get me up and running in the end, but they caused me a lot of stress and prevented me from working as productively as I could have while my laptop was gone for almost 3 weeks.
      Moral of the story:
HP has shitty quality control, and if you're going to buy a laptop through a 3rd party upgrade service like CUK, make sure you contact them first and send them the laptop first. Make sure you know what you're getting into before you purchase from a 3rd party supplier. They're a certified HP seller, so I'm not sure how things went so south, but they did.

      @Large Marche for the summary:
HP has shitty quality control, and if you're buying from a third party certified HP seller make sure you completely understand the warranty process (I failed to do that, but they mislead me as well) and how it works before you purchase.
I would say I want to chalk up this experience to my extremely bad luck, but I've had 3 other colleagues who have reported having similar issues with their HP laptops (they bought directly from HP).
So from my experience it appearance HP has some quality assurance issues they need to sort out. I feel very burned by this brand and I'm hesitant to do business with them again.

@@MCOGroupNews As the best alternative though, what would someone looking for a non-brick-able and reliable brand? I'm not a computer-savvy person and absolutely have no patience to deal with RMA calls or visiting service centers, so I'm willing to pay for a MacBook Pro to simply be worry and hiccup-free. I'm only leaning towards HP because I had an i7 HP 850 G3 from work and that has been flawless in operating my data-heavy work. I'm not too keen on Apple based products and locking myself into the Apple ecosystem either.

Only one full size-USB-port (Typ A) left, thats a fail HP. The two ports from the 1030 G2 is hardly enough and carry around another adaptor is no solution :/
    And still only HDMI 1.4.
