  • Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a preferred fuel by some fleets for its lower fuel cost and environmental emission savings. In this video, I'll show you the similarities and differences of CNG to gasoline and diesel, as well as how the refueling infrastructure for CNG operates.

    Can you do a video on LNG v CNG car engines, or Hydrogen v LNG &/or CNG? No one has ever done it. You could show clearly, for the first time, the comparisons of cost/tank capacity/mileage/BHP/pros/cons/fuel cost/ease of engine conversion (if appropriate) or cost per engine etc. I think you're the man for the mission!

      For LNG, there isn’t a light-duty engine spec, as that sits on the heavy-duty side. But, natural gas engines are the same between LNG and CNG; LNG simply warms to a gaseous state as it enters the engine, having the same ignition and octane as CNG. 😊

    What about ignition timing, optimal mixture, camshaft timing, who deals with these changes ? the customer ? does the vehicle get inspected on a Dyno before and after installation ?

    • @MattStephensRich
      @MattStephensRich  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Since CNG has a different octane vs. gasoline, it does require a swap in the engine computer. CNG is very rarely seen as an individual vehicle - far more popular with fleet vehicles, especially in heavier applications. Indeed, there's a network of mechanic shops that are certified to operate on CNG, which does require separate training.

    I half to ask, with the tank fully compressed. At 3000+ PSi. What's the range/distance of the vehicle? I'm assuming it's insanely extended.

    • @MattStephensRich

      Range is actually comparable to a full tank of gas.

    • @MattStephensRich
      @MattStephensRich  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly not at all lol or at least, if you’re asking “is CNG safe”, gratefully the answer is yes. Otherwise it wouldn’t be made available as a motor fuel.

    • @MattStephensRich
      @MattStephensRich  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not trying to come across mean, but you ultimately used a run on sentence, and just restated “not safe”, and said the engine running hot and windows closed means the car explodes? Gratefully isn’t the case - again, otherwise would definitely not be available as a motor fuel.

      @@harun9739 You're talking about the flashpoint of the fuel - the temperature at which it spontaneously combusts? Or are you concerned about the tank holding in higher pressures on hot days?
      For human-bearable temps, this should be a non-issue.

    Any danger getting rear ended with the high pressure tank?

    • @MattStephensRich
      @MattStephensRich  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ultimately this is why they have designed the tank to sit more inward within the back cargo area, giving more crumple space/ability to absorb the blow in a crash. Tanks are also crash rated to a certain extent.

    It takes away from the performance of the vehicle. BTW, the car knows what type of fuel you are using because you need to change the components of the car to run natural gas, that was a stupid comment in the video.

    • @MattStephensRich
      @MattStephensRich  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't say anything about the component integrations of CNG vs. gasoline fuel system? But yes, CNG runs at a different octane, alongside being a gas - which means injectors, fuel lines, and engine computers need to be updated for running the different fuel.
