Drunken Master 2 aka Legend of the Drunken Master is the one you should watch. Arguably Jackie Chan's best movie. I think a lot of people who voted for this thought it was the sequel.

This was one of 2 films that played a part in making Jackie into a major star during the Kung-fu craze.
He was influenced by silent film greats Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd throughout his whole career.
The director Yuen Wo-Ping is the legendary choreographer of The Matrix Trilogy; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and the Kill Bill saga among many films.
In this film, Jackie is playing a young version of Wong Fei-Hung, a folk hero of Chinese culture.
But while other actors played the character seriously, Jackie in the role took many liberties in portraying the known figure as an delinquent learning to become responsible.
The sequences are bar-none considered Jackie's best in his early career.
To combine art with action and comedy seemed impossible to viewers back then.
But it's has become the Jackie Chan signature with over 100 films, many broken bones and all worth the success.

    • @chrisleebowers
      @chrisleebowers ปีที่แล้ว +8

Folk hero Wong Fei Hung (1847-1925) is analagous to Wyatt Earp, and like Earp, he lived to see the first movies based on his life. The first actor to play him on screen was one of his students. The actor best known for portraying him is Kwan Tak-Hing who starred as Wong in 77 movies from 1947 - 1981. Along with Jackie's iconic portrayal in Drunken Master, Jet Li's star-making turn was as a more super-heroic version of Wong in the "Once Upon a Time in China" series. More recently Eddie Peng was a young Wong Fei-Hung in "Rise of The Legend" (2014)
There was a folk song called "The General's Mandate" that became Wong Fei-Hung's theme music over time. For the Jet Li Movies, new lyrics were written by James Wong and the Mandarin version used in the second movie was vocalized by... Jackie Chan (who can sing and has a whole career as a popstar on top of being cinema's greatest real-life super hero.)
Wong Fei-Hung's drunken style master, Beggar So, is also a popular figure in Chinese folklore and movies. The actor who portrayed him in this movie, Yuen Siu-Tin, reprised the role in two other movies. (Also, he's Yuen Woo-Ping's father) One of Stephen Chow's (Kung-Fu Hustle) early hits was as Master So in "The King of Beggars"

In the wake of Bruce Lee's death, there were tons of copy cats that were a dime a dozen, but with this film, Jackie Chan differentiated himself, because beyond being a masterful martial artist and stuntman, he is very funny. That mixture made him the next great martial arts legend.
NOW, you MUST watch Drunken Master 2, where Jackie revisits this character much later in his career, in what I consider his best film and one of the greatest martial arts films of all time.

Manga author Akira Toriyama cited Drunken Master as one of his major inspirations for the Dragon Ball series of shōnen manga and anime. Toriyama said that he would never have come up with Dragon Ball if he had not watched Drunken Master, and he was drawn to its more light-hearted tone. Drunken Master also served as a reference for the training scenes. The series pays homage to Drunken Master when the first tournament is held, where Kame-Sennin (Master Roshi) is disguised as "Jackie Chun" and he tries to use a Drunken Fist technique on Son Goku (Goku).

Jackie unapologetically throws every previously accepted version of Hong Kong marshal arts movies to the wind and set Asian cinema on its ear. It took a certain amount of guts and a major amount of talent to buck the status quo to create his own style. At the time, this irreverence and infectious fun involving such a reveared historical figured would have been a real risk for him but he dared to do it anyway. DRUNKEN MASTER!!! So happy y'all watched/reacted to this one! One of Jackie's best movies IMO, and some absolutely fantastic martial arts. I know you said the sequel is too easy a recc, but Legend of Drunken Master is, if anything, even better than this one.
Other reccs...you literally cant go wrong with any Jackie movie, but my personal favorite is probably Who Am I?. The rooftop fight scene is AMAZEBALLS, and it has one of the best, but also most terrifying, stunts I've ever seen.
Or, if you want to watch more of his modern stuff, Shanghai Noon & Shanghai Nights are both great! They also star Owen Wilson, and they're another 'Fish out of water' setup, like the Rush Hour movies, but they're set in the Wild West era and also star Owen Wilson. Nights has an absolutely incredible swordfighting scene.
But seriously, you cannot go wrong with a Jackie movie, period.
For non Jackie stuff...any of the Raid movies; Old Boy; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; ANYTHING with Jet Li (Hero and Fist of Legend are, IMO, two of his best).
Oh, and I cannot recommend The Forbidden Kingdom enough! Jackie Chan vs Jet Li!!!!! And Jackie (sort of) revisits his Drunken Master roots, plus Jet Li plays Sun Wuhong, the Monkey King. The whole movie brings the feel of a fantastical Chinese folk tale brought to life.

Seconding other comments, City Hunter would be an awesome Jackie Chan film to react to. Also Armor of God 1 and 2, though they didn´t age too well, and the little-known Mr. Nice Guy.

This was my first kung-fu movie. Also I believe it was the very first comedy kung-fu movie. Also Jackie chan was trained in acrobatics from a very young age in a brutal scheme (run by the government I believe as he was a orphan )

The logical follow up movie for this one is Snake in the Eagles Shadow.
Pippin is gonna love that one.
Another great classic kung fu movie is the one armed swordsman.
And for a really weird one check out kung fu zombie.

This is actually the second installment. You definitely have to react to the first one "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow", also with Jackie and his teacher and the same villain. No drinking but with similar humour and training.

-Linda Lin plays Fei Hung's Aunt.
-You should watch some more of Yuen Sin-tien, Su Hua Chi(Beggar So) aka Sam Seed. He plays a similar character in several movies. He plays Beggar Su also in "Story of Drunken Master" and "Dance of the Drunken Mantis". He also played in one called "Ol' Dirty Kung Fu".

Kung Pow did a... well it did a job, at trying to parody and satirize old kung fu movies. Liked it as a kid, but dunno if I'd like it so much as an adult. Could give it a spin on the channel once you've got some more of the classics under your belt.
I'd give this one a seven on my personal taste, but the sequel is an easy 10 for me. Rumble in the Bronx is an easy Chan film to suggest, and, in terms of more recent projects, the Foreigner was something I rather enjoyed.
