    BTW, I sold this car about 6 months ago and at that time it was still working great. I've since upgraded to a 2013 958 Cayenne Twin Turbo. Love that car.

      Got it. So it’s $750-ish (my local dealer charges $265/hr) plus whatever the part costs. If it’s not for you you are more that welcome to do it the “proper” way or figure out you own approach to fixing a common problem with the 955/957.

      Does anyone know what is the diameter of bearing after cleaned from rubber and what is inner diameter of mounting braclet after cleaned from rubber.

      Make sure to make transfer case oil replacement something that gets done when you do your motor oil. 5k for new TC. Faulty breather on your 958, allows water in..check it out

    2019 here. And your video saved my ass. Was traveling 14 hours from home. No options while traveling went to auto parts store. Did this in parking lot. Made it home safe. Zero issues.

    Worked for my 2010 Cayenne! Thank you so much! Saved me $400 for the aftermarket part . I'm sure dealer would have charged a lot more! First time ever doing DIY for my car. What a thrill. You rock! FYI I did what another commenter said and only attached 5 pieces of hose before fitting in brace. Then squeezed the other 3 pieces in and attached everything with zip ties. Takes some nifty handwork, but done with relative ease. I'm not a mechanic at all. If I can do it, anyone can. This is genius!

    Thanks for calling it the "Jimifix". I made this trick up on round transmission and motor mounts to save customers money after a trans rebuild. It is literally better than new. Then I fixed Zach's Cayenne carrier bearing this way. Not knowing it would help so many. (he started a cayenne facebook page)

    Bruh! I'm a Motor city born and raised 40+ years Master Mechanic. Restoring a 2004 Cayenne S. I welded in two exhaust flex pipes between the catalytic convertors and when I test drove the vehicle I got the legendary "Shaft Thump". But THIS!!!? This is Pure Genius!! Great tip! Stay outside the box my friend!

    Just did this repair today on my 2005 Touareg V8 AWD. I have been riding around for months with that thumping noise. Asked my mechanic three months ago if there was a way to fix without replacing the entire driveshaft and she said no. I came across this video yesterday while searching for a driveshaft to purchase. I can't believe how easy the repair was. Thumping is gone. I love my car again. Only thing I would add is to zip-tie all the 8 hoses to the bearing support. Makes it so much easier to slide over the bearings. Didn't need any lubricant. Thank you twinscrew928 for this fix!

    I too was about to order the EPS split bearing for $400 right before watching this video and I thought it looked like a hokey fix for a Porsche Cayenne (08 GTS) but then I read the overwhelming number of positive comments and thought I'd give it a try....bought two feet of 5/8 heater hose, cut it into eight 2" lengths and zip tied them together as described and used windex to lube the assembly onto the bearing and then zip tied the whole thing to the carrier itself, so far so good, I'm happy and yes, it did only cost me $2, I think I'll order a trailer hitch for the car with my savings. Thanks twinscrew928!!! I'll note the little extra length of hose on the pieces (2") gave me a little more flex to get the hose tips over the bearing with the windex as my lube

    Just fixed my bearing mount on my '06 Cayenne S with your "jimifix", I used 5/8" od coolant hose, cut into 12 1" sections, the hardest part was trimming the rubber from the mount and the bearing. I didn't see any point in trimming it down to the metal, so I just made sure to get the center connecting "rib" as close to level as possible. I also used some stainless steel safety wire along with the zip ties as an extra precaution against zip tie failure. Took it out after installation for a couple of test hits, hammered the throttle from a dead stop and it worked like a charm, no chatter or thumping at all!! I considered filling the house with silicone to help absorb vibration but I don't think it's necessary. So glad I stumbled onto your video!!! Thanks for posting it!!!

    What a life saver, I'm 550km from home in the outback and while off road drive I start hearing a loud thumping. Got back to the family shack at 50km/hr , wonder how to truck my TREG back to Adelaide. Saw you video and though I had nothing to lose. Its all in place, took a bit to cut the cable ties etc, used silicone spray to help slide the hoses over. Went for a test drive and all good. Looking at all the comments I'm confident I will get back home and beyond. Thank you for your video!!!

    This solution is absolutely excellent .. Here's what I did to make this job easier .. 1. tie wrap only 4 or 5 sections of the hoses (rather than all 8 at once) It's way too tight with all 8 hose sections at once .. 2. put/rest the 4 or 5 piece section onto the top of bearing (hold it there so that the section won't roll off the bearing) and then squeeze the bearing support over it (this is fairly easy because you have plenty of room to push in each of the hose sections ) 3. next individually squish in the remaining 3 or 4 pieces of hoses to make it 8 total pieces .. 4. tie wrap the remaining 3 or 4 pieces to themselves & the adjacent hoses to complete the tie wrap chain 5. tie wrap the hose chain onto the bearing support at 12 o'clock 9 o'clock 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock .. if 12 o'clock is too hard to reach, skip it. Enjoy & Thanks for this great solution & the many helpful comments .. I bought a util knife, tie wraps the kind that's heat resistant, heater hose 3/4 OD 5/8 ID, used a 5/8 socket for the big bolts 16mm socket for the two smaller bolts, total cost of the hose, knife, tie wraps: $20 .. Very happy about this DIY job.

      @@fernandoct6 hopefully it isn’t the drive shaft bent or damaged prior to this fix .. my drive shaft was beginning to thump and I fixed it ASAP without any damage to the shaft from excessive thumping ( my center bearing rubber wasn’t completely ripped apart when I replaced it with the heater hose) .. gotta be sure the heater hose sections are tied evenly and snugly .. my shaft has been flawless since my fix so far .. Be sure to use high temperature tolerance tie wraps ..

      @@alanshen2544 mine wans't damaged at all. I bought 3M ties (UV, Dust, heat resistence)... and it has vibration only between 22-32 miles.. If I drive at 50 or 100 miles it doesn´t vibrate..

    My tip for fitting the new support over the bearing is to use more zipties to flatten each piece of hose against the mount, then cut and remove once in place. Very easy this way.

    Hi Andrew, I was 5 minutes away from ordering a $400 aftermarket driveshaft support and after watching your video I decided to switch gears. With nothing to lose, I figured it was worth a couple bucks to give your method a try. And yes, I had a hell of a time sliding the hose and bracket back over the bearing. So after a few failed attempts, I used some ingenuity and cut a 2 liter soda bottle and wrapped it over the shaft to use as a transition slide over the bearing. It worked great... (be sure to remove the plastic) THANK YOU!!!!! I fixed my Cayenne for $2 - You rock!

      @@twinscrew928 my car makes the EXACT same thumping sound only when I accelerate. When I take my foot off the throttle it stops. Furthermore it only does it when I reach 35-45 mph. Did u experience the same thing?

      @@JoonBalloon Exactly! It's the beginning stages of the failure. 45-60 minutes of your time and some 5/8" heater hose, some zip ties, and you're done!

    My fiancee and I tried this fix after being quoted $2,000 at the mechanic 😱 we figured, what have we got to lose! Got the pieces for maybe like $15 and took about an hour to get it put together, 6 months later its still SMOOTH AS BUTTA. At first it felt slightly gravely driving, but maybe 3 weeks later totally smoothed out! I have an 07 Touareg. THANK YOU!!!!!!!

    This is a great fix. I followed these instructions a couple of days ago and it has worked very well. My 2004 Cayenne S now drives like it did before the cardan shaft center support failed a couple of weeks ago. To do the job, I bought a 1 foot length of 5/8" heater hose for $1.80 and a 100 count bag of 12" nylon ties (I only used 12 of these ties in the repair) for about a buck. I cut the hose into 8 lengths of 1 inch and connected them with the nylon ties as instructed in the video. The repair took me a couple of hours, but then again I'm not a mechanic. Thank you for this great idea!

    thank you for the IDEA, for me i have ADDED and IMPROVED method, before attaching the hose and Both sides (bearing and mounting) , I use silicon sealant high (temperature)
    First to make it easy to bring the hose into the bearing and
    SECONDLY when it dry, it will stay intact without changing thickness that may cause vibration.

    2008 T V6 with the same problem. Went to dealership and was quoted $2200.00, Went to my garage and was quoted $1200, looked online and almost ordered a $399 fix... Saw your vid and did it with the stuff in my garage! Love you tube!!! All the haters go spend you money and chill!

    Holy shit it works!!!!!!!! This dude brought my baby back from the edge of death.
    I got the 5/8th inch heater tubing from the auto parts store, and was able to fit eight 1" pieces in, just like twinscrew928. This left a small gap for me, and someone in the comments said they were able to get nine in there but I had enough trouble trying to get the eight to fit over the bearing... I think nine would have been near impossible. (I have a 2005 v8 treg btw).
    I used a serrated razor to clean up the edges and it was super easy going.
    I tried the plastic bottle/hand sani route (after having to borrow some hand sanitizer from a friends work place cuz every store was sold out... frickin Corona Virus) and it worked well to get it on but then I wasn't able to slide the bottle back out once the setup was on the bearing so I had to go back to the drawing board.
    I ended up sliding a strong fork handle under each of the tubes and prying them over the gap one by one. It was not easy, it was not quick, but it was the only way I could figure out how to do it!!!
    I've done a few home repairs on my motorcycle but this was my first time ever doing a car repair. It took me about 3 hours all in all but 3 hours of my Sunday is definitely worth $1,600. If I can do it, you can, and you should!

      I think water would have worked just as well. The reason they suggest gel hand sanitizer is that it evaporates, but not right away like pure alcohol and is nice and slippery. From that perspective you could use soapy water and then just rinse it later.

    8/15/17 So I went and did this similar. I had pulled the shaft (no big deal) and deliberating repair options. I was going to fill the center with silicone adhesive (might work) but liked the heater hose chunks! Left some rubber for grip on the bearing and the filler in the support ring for grip too. Pulled the two seals with dental pick and added some grease and resealed. Used 7/8" OD so it had instant pressure and went around and filled the ring. Tied each one to the bearing frame rather than to each other. This is easy outside the car. Added some Permatex black silicone (racing black...very important...this is a V10) to the outer sections between donuts. Overkill probably. Left the bearing surface to float so I could remount and adjust when installing. Wife's car and she did a bunch of punch outs tonight (her therapy) and all is well. Thanks for amazing leap of thinking for this fix. Go for it. George

    Long live TH-cam and content creators! Bearing support completely detached on my 04 CS with 147k miles. This fix worked like a charm, saved me several hundred dollars and time. I highly recommend 2L bottle method - cut out long piece just enough to wrap the bearing/shaft once. I also recommend adding grease to the bearing, when I opened the seal it practically had no grease.

    Thank you for this video. It worked well! Some suggestions:
    -I was able to fit 9 pcs 5/8" ID (3/4"OD), 1.5"~2" pieces to give more margin.
    -Yes removing old rubber is the hard part, sharp utility knife/razor works well, replace often and wear gloves.
    -2L bottle trick works very well. Don't use 500ml drink bottle plastic, too thin and will rip while removing. Lube with hand sanitizer; they evaporate and keep contact with bracket/bearing tightly. No need to notch 45 degree cuts.
    - 13mm and 16mm socket.

    Just performed this at home on my 05 Cayenne Turbo. Worked like a charm! Only thing I needed which wasn't mentioned in the video or comments so far (but most of you probably already have) is some penetrating oil to loosen the now 16 yr old bolts on the plate covering the bearing support. Thanks

    Thinking about trying this on my 2006 CTS V, the center support assembly is the same part number between the two vehicles. Going to try with just the hoses first and see it holds up. If it needs extra I'm going to try and fill the holes of the hoses with some 3M window weld to stiffen them up a little.

    What worked well to slide the bushing over the bearing is to use the massive amounts of blood flowing from the fingers I cut trying to remove the rubber as lubricant.

    I can’t believe I made it. The coke bottle definitely helped a lot. Cut it longer to wrap on both the bearing and the drive shaft. I spend $100 or so including ramps, tools, hose and etc. I used 5/8” od Gates heater hose which I got from O’Reilly’s for $1.7 per foot. Cut it into 8 1.5” length pieces. I didn’t shave all the rubber on the bearing and the support ring. I just made them feel even on the surface. The fit is tight but it’s definitely doable and not hard at all.
    I mean thank you all for posting this video and other helpful comments. I’ll report here if it stops lasting otherwise I’m running good out here.

    What I ended up doing was after chopping out the rubber, I packed the void with a Gates coupler that I had from replacing it on the alternator. It needed just a bit more so I stuffed a piece of 6 rib serpentine belt in there.

    I did the same type of fix. (9 peices of 5/8 heater hose) Only I used a single metal zip tie to make the string of tubes(drilled through the sides.) Then placed it around the bearing.(the connection is in the middle of a hose piece. ) Using a couple normal zip ties I compressed the tubes and fit the bracket around them. Cut the compressing zip ties and used about 6 metal zip ties to hold the hoses in place on the outer ring. If this doesn't last longer than the original I'll be surprised.

    Yup on that $1300 spot-on estimate for a shop to replace the whole shaft, bearings and soft bits. I had that awful disintegrating BANG BANG on my 2006 3.2 at ~135K, too mid-body to be the engine, thankful it wasn't. Videos certainly helped diagnose. Mid Winter, deep freeze and no garage so I had to bring it in. Crafty fix indeed!

    I wonder if you used a bit of Flex Seal to seal up the hose pieces when you insert it into the pillar chassis. Its interesting indeed. I had my egg in the shop recently and it ran $198 for the whole pillar bearing apparatus. And another $160 for labor. The mechanic did mention the one seen everywhere but he suggested a new bearing considering he believed it was the original 16 year old one. But once he viewed the videos of people installing the easy fix device (for $300-400) he was going to suggest it for newer fixes. Its interesting in how many videos the mechanic used to fix my car for the week it was in the shop. But it was a private shop. What impressed me is both local VW factory shops send people to this shop when a fix by VW is suggested where it exceeds the value of the car, which was my case.

    There seems to be some concern about the longevity of this repair. I have an 06 CS and this same issue occurred to me over 7 years ago while moving my family. In GA the rubber bushing failed and the resulting loud clunking sounded like a massive catastrophic failure! Had it towed to the nearest dealership in ATL and all things considered the $1000+ I was charged wasn't nearly as bad as some the horror stories I've heard (the dealership felt generous as I was active duty moving with my wife and 1 year old son and towing a U-Haul). Any way, long story short, the factory recommended repair lasted right up to a day ago when I heard that old familiar noise again. This time around I'm gonna fix it myself using "twinscrews" method. Will it last 7 years? I don't know. Will it cost me over a grand in parts and labor plus cost of towing it to shop? Obviously not. I figure I like to wrench on my cars as much as I can when I have the knowledge and ability to do so. This definitely falls into that category. That being said, this is not a question of if, but when this is going to happen to you! (Sort of reminiscent of the dreaded IMS bearing in the M96 engines). Having an ability to fix a serious issue with little material cost and a bit of elbow grease in an emergency situation is AWESOME!

      There is a service bulletin on the wiring under the seats for the airbags. If the wiring is corrected, the light should go off and stay off.

    This is the second time Ive had to replace the carrier assembly for 2 different cayenne's. Not sure if i can add that to my beautiful cayenne! But on the bright side the upgrade/replacement part has come down to like 325$! Great idea tho!!!

      Mark Johnson - you made it too stiff. Go back and only add 8 pieces of 5/8” braided heater hose.

    Ok, this is what I'm going to do. The carrier bearing went on my Touareg today and I got on TH-cam for some inspiration.
    You can use silicone caulking as lubricant then when it sets it becomes part of the fix.
    I'll probably fill the holes in hoses with black polyurethane then cut off the cable ties because that just looks too kludgy. I know, it works but it looks terrible.
    Thanks for the idea, it's better than anything I came up with.

      not sure if you've done it yet, but I wouldn't fill the holes. It needs the area to allow it to move. If you fill the holes it will have a vibration. I did that on my ALLROAD just an FYI

    EPS has a replacement, its costly but a bit more reliable then zipties. specially if you have the v10tdi.

      The zip ties are used only to hold the hoses together. They are not used to support the actual bearing.

      the outward forces of that shaft are pretty much equal, and since they are only outward the rubber hoses will never really want to move out of the housing anyway, so if you have the (indeed excellently powerfull) V10 TDI or the R5 it won't make much difference :-)

      I think you could use any type of rubber hose. Just be sure it's not too soft or thin. It has been almost a year since I did this and it is still working great.

    I have the same problem with my Touareg - Your solution looks good. how long has it lasted. I was thinking of making a split rubber doughnut to insert with lips on both sides of the steel bracket. How big is this market???

    I’ve done the same trick .it works great. Thank you for the explanation. I used a plastic bottle to slide the rubber on the shaft . It was easier. 👍. I have a problem with the PCM that keeps opening and closing by itself. Does anybody knows any solution?

    This worked great for me but I have two suggestions.
    Get your hose assembly inside the bracket first, then slip the bracket into place over the bearing.
    First I used spray silicone lubricant and it made the hose assembly slip on the driveshaft nice and easily. This made it easier to get it inside the bracket. I left the excess zip tie ends in place and I was able to use them as handles to help pull the hose assembly into the bearing. I trimmed them off after everything was in place.
    Second, I tapered the hoses. I did the inside end toward the bearing of each piece of hose to help it get over the bearing (do this step during assembly of the hoses before you close it up around the driveshaft) and I tapered one end of the outer edge of the hoses to help get the assembly into the bracket. I just used my utility razor knife to cut about a 45 degree angle back about 1/4” while it was wrapped on the driveshaft. A little persuasion with a small flathead screwdriver helped get the assembly in place and centered on both the bearing and the bracket. Tapering really helped since it’s a tight fit.
    I’m pretty sure I started with nine 1 3/4” pieces of hose ziptied together but to finally get it all together I had to eliminate one piece of hose for a grand total of 8.
    Total cost was about $4 worth of hose, about a dozen zip ties, and one cold Heineken. Sure beats a $1,000 labor bill from the mechanic!
    The test drive was awesome. No more thumpity thump noise on acceleration or vibration when coasting. My old bearing was completely gone and there was a lot of wobble and play in that bracket. This fix did the trick! Thanks so much for sharing this video with the world! I hope my tips help out someone with this same issue.

Just done this but slightly differently, pretty easy job, worst bit was getting the old rubber off the bearing and housing until I tried a Dremel and the sanding tubes which soon made light work of it. Also on assembly I aligned the housing with the bearing first and then put the cut hose pieces in with a bit of help from a heat gun to soften them up and some lube to squeeze them in until they were all the way around, then cable tied them in situ to each other and around the housing. Test drive and perfecto!!

      DPIN 365 use it like a funnel to guide the hose pieces in. If you do it right, it should just slide in without catching.

    I applaud your craftyness...did you ever get around to replacing the center bearing/mount; if so, with what? just helped a friend fix his destroyed center bearing mount (while it was still on the truck) using the hose method [until another solution can be sourced]...we used 3/4" radiator hose and was able to fit 7 pieces around the bearing...it was really tight, but we put them in one at a time and not joined like you did...I'm guessing you used 5/8" or 1/2" radiator hose...it was has to see and the size was not mentioned or at least I don't recall hearing it...

    What diameter was this hose, the only thing I could find is fuel hose which seems to have a thicker sidewall with only an 8mm internal diameter.

I am grateful for your post. The Touareg bracket was only big enough for 7 3/4" radiator hose sections. It's important to not forget to ziptie the hose sections to the bracket. Thanks again! Spent $3.89 on the hose.

    Its a great "get you home" fix but there's an aftermarket option that is a two part bracket that doesn't require removal of the propshaft. Its still a DIY job and will outlast the car unlike this quick fix.

      Use tubing mate and you can put it in one piece at a time and then zip tie them in... I did it and it worked. Sadly my bearing was already cooked.

    Just a 928 question..... as a project think of using a Cayenne drivetrain to be mounted under a 928 body.....to create a 928 4x4.......What is your opinion on this project?

      Personally I think thats a brilliant idea, I'd be tempted to drop in the 4.5 litre v8 too, you may have to relocate the dry-sump but I'm sure it could be worth the effort when its churning 350hp.     Hi there my cayenne 2004 make a zing when in drive after about 4 to 5 feet of driving. I think its the front differential because it near the front. where should start to Dx.

      That's doesn't sound good. I would first try to diagnose where the sound is coming from. Then see if there is anything obviously broken or wrong. My Cayenne has been relatively reliable considering the age and mileage. Now has 166k miles. Just got done towing a 7500# trailer with my race car 1300 miles to and from VIR. I have not touched the center shaft bearing since I did this fix.

    This is temporary fix for few hundreds miles and you will get vibration and this thing will need again to do same thing
