FYI - spiral balance is tightened in the direction of the corkscrew and loosened in the opposite, so it depends on the direction of the spiral balance you have. Mine tightened in the opposite direction mentioned in this video.

My problem is when I slip the end of the spiral in to the white plastic guide it goes up the window and disappears behind the window frame on the track and it is too far up for me to slide the metal retainer in to the white plastic guide. I end up having to take the screw out of the top of the spiral balancer and push it down with a stiff wire take it all apart and start over. So far I have not gotten it back together. So frustrated!

OK so my problem was due to trim I could not tilt the window sash in, and by doing so it pivots a piece in the "shoe" that locks it in place in the track. SO, what I did was take a piece of string and put it around the metal spiral letting the two ends dangle down. After I slipped the end of the spiral in to the shoe I used the string to slowly let the shoe go up in between the track and the window frame until I could slide the retaining pin into the shoe. Once I had I let go of one end of the string and pulled it out. I know it's not how it is supposed to be done but unless I tore all that trim out this is what worked for me. I used several pairs of needle nose vice grips(including one as a substitute for the special balance twist tool) one regular pair to hold the window open, string, philips screwdriver, paper clip(to grab the spiral when it fell in to the track).
