This is a really great interview and very helpful. The most useful part was about getting 10 lower rate, small jobs to build your platform. My family and I are going to live abroad in Southeast Asia next year and will use this method.
Cheap freelancers do Fk up everything up, regardless of location. However, they work incredibly hard (most that I've worked with do). I try to put their shoe on my American foot. If I worked for them and there was a communication barrier, I'd fk everything up too. Overall enjoyed interview. "Don't assume everyone is broke." Great quote.
What he said I don't think was meant to be racist, he meant if they're from Indian they are not gonna have the best English, thus they will mess things up and miss interpret things, meaning you will have to pay them even more just for them to fix it
Really good tips for new entrepreneurs, whether you are on Upwork or not. Brett has a very valuable business advice and Chris always does good interviews and is inspiring. Double profit in this video:)
Advice for someone that's just starting out but needs help building a website or two? I've got 3 WordPress sites, one with a paid theme, just sitting there.....half finished.
Chris the Freelancer I'm all over the place. One is a dropship store. one is a kind of general page for private label/brand products for Amazon FBA selling. And one is a kind of support page/affiliate marketing page for the TH-cam channel I hope to find the time to build. :/
You would get a more helpful response with a more specific question, but in general, Think about what people will type into Google to find your website and use those phrases, and key words in your text. Most people will view your site on a mobile device, so write your paragraphs in bite sized chunks. Create an email address just for your website, and have a Contact Us link on your site. You also want to have a privacy policy page. Learning some basic html and CSS code will be helpful in designing your website. Think about website optimization and make your website fast loading. People don't want to wait more than several seconds for it to load up. After you have yours up, you can check it at www.websiteoptimization.com that site will analyze yours, and recommend changes. If procrastination is the problem remember, sleep is overrated. Go to bed an hour later at night, and work on your site every night. Set a goal to finish it, and commit to it. You can always go back and fix mistakes later. Good Luck!!!
If you're driving a car and you pull out the drive at 70 mph you are most likely going to crash. Instead of jumping in at the deep end try just focusing your energy on one thing at a time. Don't run before you can walk..
Does anyone here have an opinion regarding working under an established freelancer? A busy freelancer outsourcing part of his work to another newbie freelancer. Is this a common thing? I'm new to the industry and was curious about possibly helping out an already successful freelancer... in a scenario where both parties are win-win. Thanks Chris for the wonderful vid.
Looks like you do a lot of video editing / filming and voice acting on your Upwork. And you do digital marketing too? Does the diverse skill set make you more attractive or is it distracting from the programming for potential employers?
Could having different Upwork profiles be a solution? There is this theory, that some people have multiple interest and they are called divergent thinkers. Most creative people are divergent thinkers (like Pieter Levels), still people that recruits is pretty hard and most of the time will just hire those with most experience and specific consolidated skills. For sure having different profiles could be an idea. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divergent_thinking
comet3bc13 ok. I understand your point of view. From the Upwork point of view he is not a programmer and from the Upwork point of view I am also not a programmer. The other guy has experience, so it is easier on Upwork, but as my understanding he is focused on Wordpress. If you have experience you can get work easier on Upwork, but this does not mean that you are not a programmer. First of all Chris works with Ruby on Rails, which is better then working with Wordpress, because it is full-stack development, you can easily take your app to the Android/IOS Store with phonegap, you build quickly apps because there is tons of OpenSource and project. Linkedin, Twitter, Codecademy, Airbnb, Couchsurfing and go check the full list at skillcrush.com/2015/02/02/37-rails-sites/ they are all build on ruby on rails. Wordpress is for building Website like your company website, your shop website, so staff that will not generate income... (like Linkedin). Then I am too a Full-Stack Ruby on Rails Developer and I work with the following technologies Ruby, Rails, CSS, HTML, Javascript, Jquery, Bootstrap, Docker, Heroku, postegresql, mysql, ember.js and a lot of Mobile Development. I do not have Upwork Experience, but I still consider myself a "programmer"
I'm from a 3rd world country and I found Brett's comment really offensive. We work according to our capabilities, skills, experience, studies,... Where we are from, what's our skin color and which is our native language doesn't have anything to do with our professional development. There're a lot of people that haven't had your same possibilities in life and we all have to make a living.
I live in a third world country, but that doesn't mean I do low quality work, and by no means I wanna charge something under 30$. How am I gonna make it on UpWork? If clients see that I'm from Ukraine and instantly I'm perceived as somebody who you can't count on or somebody who won't do work well. And ofc my English is not that smooth which only adds up.
Great video Chris and Brett! I subscribed to Brett's channel, and I gained a lot of insight from this video about building business relationships by using Upwork. My biggest issue currently, is that I've been intimidated to make that first approach using the Upwork client. I have my profile completed, but I have some apprehension in trying to find my first jobs. Any advice for getting over this first Upwork job jitters? Thanks again!
Yes, I am also not very in the Upwork mindset. It is just the idea of loosing control over my Apps for relatively not much money. I allways think, that some Apps could get successful and profitable, but the good thing is that you can get a low payment on Upwork, but still get some shares in the App.
Hello Chris, I am sorry that I am posting again a new message, but I have been doing some thinking about your tips on Upwork. From a quick analysis I have done of upwork, I hardly could find Developers on Ruby on Rails working for less then 20$ per hour. I was able to find some developer working for 15$ an hour. Still all this developer have done. 1. Some skill testing 2. Some basic very cheap upwork experience 3. Some projects... So as my understanding this are the 3 requirement that I need to fulfill to work on upwork... ? All Ruby on Rails Developer had some HTML/CSS knowledge. On the opposite the best developer with rate around 100$ Dollars per hours would have 5-7 Years of Exp, Many programming languages (all back and front end Web Development), some basic porting capabilities of the apps to mobile, some of them were focused more on the backend server administration, other more on the programming with different languages. You can do this queries on Upwork...
nice channel chris. i was shocked that you live in thailand since i also moved here about a year ago. im new to this kind of field and im gonna be a self taught. hoping that you can give me some pointers or leads about this field. :) i could learn a lot from you. im from philippines btw. ahah.
ive been hustlein for over more than 3 months i need helo am doing something bad i have a bachelor and excperience of 4 years can i get some help crhis ?? or contact you
Hey Chris I live in Thailand and was wondering are there any guys or gals who do Facebook ads for clients? I'm looking to hire someone to manage my Facebook ad campaigns.
I'd recommend this guy. Never worked with him personally but I have chatted with him and watched some of his interviews www.linkedin.com/in/bauke-vreeswijk-1580b252/
What is high rates? Why you afraid of numbers? I think 30$ is a good rate for web developer in upwork, but you can find developer in UK for that money. In case of long term. How much do you charge? p.s. good interview. It would be great to have talks like this in some event in CM. I see mostly marketing talks around now...
Hi Guys, I have to critique Brett's approach when it comes to Top of funnel leads. It is only viable if you're a graphic designer, web-developer or coder. Why? Because 1) As a digital marketing consultant, copywriter, translator or anybody focusing on a niche etc. it is harder to take on small, quick jobs to get emails and reviews and 2) high-net-worth clients on Upwork are rare (same for freelancer.com, peopleperhour or similar sites). Most people use the platform to outsource cheaply. Affluent clients have different shopping behaviours. Check out Dan Lok's channel if you want to know what I mean.
David N. I really like Dan Lok. I think the main difference though is mindset. Dan Lok is a gazillionaire with 3 step process. Build high income skills, grow a sustainable business, invest. This guy just wants to have enough to live comfortably and have freedom which I totally get
that was not a nice statement. am in a third world country, i don't do shitty world, i have my CCIE i have worked for over 10 year in information security companies. To be honest that was quite racist
Before Upwork, it was Elance. 50% or more of the clients threatened bad feedback if they didn't get endless amounts of additional free work. Freelancing sucks big time.
The comment about Indian developers in the mid-point was derogatory and racist. It would help your professionalism if you cut this section out and re-uploaded the video. Otherwise, it is very interesting.
OK but that's the not same as website design and development, or marketing skills. I have outsourced several times and have never had good results for a variety of reasons, so I can understand the comments made even if they are a blanket statement.
I perhaps also should have added experience with Indian platform developers as well. I have had my share of problems with quality with Indian developers, but I've also experienced some really great ones, and I think that the same can be said when I've worked with western freelancers - you get a mix of both the good and the bad, and actually some of the problems can stem from if you're not giving clear instructions as to what you want the freelancer to do. But Brett has made a sweeping statement which I'd be REALLY angry about if I were a good quality Indian developer. It's not a helpful statement at all.
I agree completely. Whats wrong with you guys. I love to travel, I have money but I am not in any way superior to any race on earth. You have good and bad people anywhere. You would have no trouble finding crap freelances from anywhere including western countries. When I was at uni in Sydney, I was one of the few who submitted my own assignments. If you want a good freelancer from anywhere you have to do some research,.
Love how down to earth and actionable this is. Totally agree that you have to keep providing value and educate your former clients into rehiring you.
One of the better interviews I think. Straight forward and practical advice. I liked this one a lot.
I love Brett's no bullshit approach.
Awesome advice! I am a freelancer myself and read the book "Stop Thinking Like a Freelancer" and you guys are spot on. Thanks for sharing
This is a really great interview and very helpful. The most useful part was about getting 10 lower rate, small jobs to build your platform. My family and I are going to live abroad in Southeast Asia next year and will use this method.
Hows the freelance gig going now? 2 years later!?
Great video Chris. Some really good advice from Brett and yourself.
Cheap freelancers do Fk up everything up, regardless of location. However, they work incredibly hard (most that I've worked with do). I try to put their shoe on my American foot. another great vlog, nice one Chris and Brett, very useful tips and tools, keep them coming!
Thanks for interview Chris. We need this straight forward advices. Thanks to Brett
This was incredibly helpful and informative
the part about finding someone in India to do the work cracked me up! truth is truth, good stuff, peace from China.
Nice, I'm a veteran editor diving into this world over the last few months. Useful info - thanks!
Oh my favorite guys in one video
What he said I don't think was meant to be racist, he meant if they're from Indian they are not gonna have the best English, thus they will mess things up and miss interpret things, meaning you will have to pay them even more just for them to fix it
Great content even almost a year later, thank you for a great interview!
Excellent advice, especially about your rates and how to nurture working relationships with clients
This video came in a good timing! Thanks, Chris
Great information! As someone that's wanting to get into freelance web development, it's really helpful :) keep up the awesome videos
Really good interview. I'll probably re-watch (well, I'll listen to it) because I think these tips and techniques are super useful. Kudos guys!
Thank you for the effort to post this video and all your other videos too.
Really good tips for new entrepreneurs, whether you are on Upwork or not. Brett has a very valuable business advice and Chris always does good interviews and is inspiring. Double profit in this video:)
Wow !! i was really looking at this, thanks so much.
Great video guys, gave me a lot of ideas i'm going to be implementing soon, thank you.
It's not the time that we f**k up with. It's all about the time zone. So just chillax.

Good discussion, It helps me to focus and find the right state of mind
Glad to hear!
Brett knows the score :) Great advice, thanks.
Extremely informative. Thanks a lot!

Good observation. I need to specialise in something. Will address this in a later video

Really useful information, thanks!
So you're recording the audio via the phone mic? How are you synching it so well?
There's a feature (that Brett told me about actually) called 'Synchronise Clip' in Final Cut Pro X. Before that, I lined it up manually.
I live in a third world country, but that doesn't mean I do low quality work, and by no means I wanna charge something under 30$. How am I gonna make it on UpWork? really good advice! I've been finding something as comprehensive as this
Really good information. Thanks fellas :)
I recently just signed up for Upwork. Hoping to use these tips to find gigs.
How'd it go?
Lolwut, you dont pay for Upwork and it has an escrow.
so how much should I charge for a logo design in the beggining
Very cool interview, learn a lot from it
Love this BrettDev guy
I need to build a shopify app for 150$, but only 5$ in escrow.. crazy.. I need motivation.. I am new to shopify.. thanks
thank you for the awesome interview :)

Feel the fear and do it anyway? Fake it till you make it? It's all been said before. You just have to be courageous.

super informative stuff man
Loved it thank you
Why people sell freelance as a paid vacation? in other hand, is a great video for begginers.
Not sure what you mean by that Omar. Please explain.
People believe the freelance work, it's like paid vacation. When you really work very hard with some clients.
What is high rates? Why you afraid of numbers?
I think 30$ is a good rate for web developer in upwork, but you can find developer in UK for that money. In case of long term.

My current rate according to my UpWork profile is $40 USD per hour
My rate is 35 USD. I have experience of 15 years as front-end developer. But I work on Upwork only 5 months (and as freelancer also).
Very good video. The accent by the way is very nice ;)

Your landing page for the free ebook has a spelling mistake "freee". I just had to mention this :D Change it and delete my comment haha!
I couldn't see your face towards the end of the video.
You must have missed the title about the camera overheating.
I'm sure this interview could have been 15 minutes shorter.
#buzzcut
Why 8 dislikes? A competing channel trying to troll Chris?
maybe some people didnt find it helpful
Its obvious
3 rd world countries got offended
that was not a nice statement. am in a third world country, i don't do shitty world, i have my CCIE i have worked for over 10 year in information security companies. To be honest that was quite racist
I apologise for any offensive comments made in this video.
$3/hr for software devs. 😂🤣😂🤣

Just curious, but have you ever outsourced web dev or design to India KungZoo?
I regularly work with India-based typesetters.
OK but that's the not same as website design and development, or marketing skills. I have outsourced several times and have never had good results for a variety of reasons, so I can understand the comments made even if they are a blanket statement.

Question. How much is Upwork paying you ? This looks like a commercial .
haha really? It's us freelancers that have to pay UpWork 20% of our client fee.
