      I have a Rochester 4 barrel and the left main jet is clogged I’m wondering if the torch method may be better than taking off the boat and paying 300 plus to have rebuilt and installed
      Could you elaborate? I’m fairly mechanically inclined and familiar with the use of the torch ( brazing, sweating in lines etc etc )

    I've always had good luck with the metal wire from inside those 'twisties' that are used to wrap up bags of bread.

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on Chris! I find the wire from the brush is "stiffer" but the bread tie wire would be less risk if someone didn't have the "feel" yet too! Good stuff.

    The micro hand drill handle is a great way to secure the wire. I have one but never though of using it for that application, I’ve been using the wires for a 12” brush for 30+yrs but would pull out one of the bundles then unfold a wire to have enough to hold on to and perform the procedure as described. The down side to my method is ounce and a while I’d poke my finger on the end I’m holding “not good” especially when then using a cleaning agent it tends to sting a little, not to mention direct injection into my body. So this will be a excellent upgrade.
    ps: With the new fuels in California were getting a denser hard almost calcification type deposit in the jet bores, as the fuel evaporates it “reduces” the size and creates a lean condition after about 3-4wks. The only fix that has constantly worked is to have the customer drain the bowl if not ridden at least weekly (they forgot if I say 2wks) so I tell them drain it after the weekend of riding! Starting the bike every so often can make it worse we’ve found because every time the fuel level drops especially when the heat of summer rapidly evaporates the level it leaves another micro deposit repeatedly reducing its flow potential and going from popping on deceleration to a no condition after only 2-3wks. When we have a stubborn rider that refuses to drain the bowl it’s a source of revenue I’d rather not receive but after they have a few bad ride days, it’s usually hay Ray when should I drain the bowl? One last thing we’ve learned with our CA. fuel is taking the long wire and putting a couple of snake type non-acute bends along the length helps to assist in removing the “hard brittle”deposit around the circumference of the hole! And no it doesn’t in-large the dia. as was the concern of someone else in relation to the use of a small wire! I also have a set of tiny “minus”plug gauges for super small pilot jets that a brush wire that small is to flexible. The only thing I thought I was going to say before ALL THIS Was to say that you explain things in a way that is AWESOME you assume the person will benefit from a step by step explaining of why you are doing the procedure in that particular way, painting a mind picture for us! and it works VERY WELL! THANK YOU! Keep up the great instructional videos! THE EAR BUDS SOUND GREAT! 🙏🇺🇸🗽😁😎

      @@How2Wrench Yes. Also I just bought a problem child 2002 Suzuki Bandit 1200. The float seats were leaking, there was nasty corrosion of the carb body where the o-ring of the brass seats. I cleaned corrosion carefully using a rotary tool on ultra slow and just kissed the edge of the surface to get the corrosion off. That still left an unacceptable surface to seal an o-ring reliably so I used Hylomar racing formula and applied tiny dabs to the o-ring seating surface using a dental tool, and to the surface of the o-rings, wait for a minute for the Hylomar to flash and then assembled. Prior to assembly I used a hardwood dowel in a drill to polish the needle seat of the brass, inspected the needles and found them pliable and no grooves so I re-used them. The bike has been running excellent and no leaks. It was a last ditch effort to save the carbs, the only other option was carb replacement. I wouldn’t do it for a customer’s bike, but I’m not a professional motorcycle mechanic. For 50 cents of sealant it saved the carbs, I highly recommend Hylomar.

    Here's a method I have used. If you know someone in the printing trade ask them very nicely if they can get you a 1 gal can of what's called press wash. This is in my mind hands down the best degreaser and carb cleaner I have ever used!!! No joke... I took a Holley 4150 650 cfm double pumper. That was so badly clogged up...NO GAS WOULD FLOW THRU IT... I threw it in a 5 gal bucket of wash... didn't even take it apart. Let it soak for 2 hrs. Pulled it out worked the throttle linkage it passed some gas. Back in bucket soak 2 more hrs. Pulled it out. That carb was spotless inside and out.i promptly disassembled it and looked... it was totally clean.NO VARNISH !! And the best part is the wash won't eat the gaskets or dry them out.i was a web offset printer for 12 yrs. AND THIS IS HOW I DID MINE. The wash is also nonflammable (YUP WE TRIED TO LIGHT THE SHIT ON FIRE). It lasts a long time.

Works perfect and I use side cutters to pull the whole wire out at one time. Then straighten it out, no need for a handle that way. Think I paid $1.29 for that brush years ago. So been the best buy.

    I use the Superfloss on jets as well, but I use it in a different way. When I have an engine that's surging, I use the "fabric" part in the middle of the floss along with some Brasso brass polish to clean and slightly enlarge the hole in the jet. I just run the jet back and forth until the floss starts turning a little black. You want to take off just a little, put the jet back in, and then do it again if it's still surging. I used this method on a 179cc Powermore (Chinese Honda clone) engine; those engines have a reputation for running a little lean and surging. It fixed the problem completely. I hope this helps someone.

    If U use copper wire you don't have the damage issues also use mercury power engine tune and soak for a while before U use air to blow it out I use butane lighter fuel can and put the filler on the jet and pump some butane thru and it freezes the jet and the dirt then blow it with compressed air and the frozen for shrinks and comes off ,also butane is handy for seized jets as it shrinks the jet before U use a screw driver to undo it ,

    I use bicycle shift cables. You can un coil them and cut to length and have super tiny stainless wire that’s stiff enough to get those stubborn clogs out.
    Has to be SHIFTER cable brakes are much bigger.

    Great concept...I like the idea of a non abrasive method. 👍
    However at the small engine repair shop we use a acetylene torch tip cleaner followed by chemical pressure dip tank, the entire disassemble carb. goes in for 30 mins. And we have used micro drill bits but only at the clogged end and not all the way through the jet.
    But like most people... I don’t have that at home and I don’t have ultrasonic cleaner at home just a can of carb. dip.
    The ear buds sounded good, you might need another set charged set on standby when making educational videos?
    Great job as always Shane‼️

    @5:30 the holes in your idle jet looks Really large. On my 150 cc scooter carb the jet size is 105. I could see no hole when holding it up to the light. Carb cleaner alone would not work. I had to heat it up and go through both sides with a straight pin which does not go all the way through.. the actual hole must be really tiny compared to the straight pin and only the very tip of the straight pin went through. Anyway, now I can see a teny tiny hole. It looks perfectly round so I hope I got it clean. About to put it back in and find out.

  • @EarlGuyton425
    @EarlGuyton425 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Heres one way, but the wire can be too soft. Just take a length of 12 gauge to 16 gauge electrical wire and cut the insulation off and seperate the wires and push one or two wires through the jet back and forth. Or you might could unravel a paper clip and run that back and forth through these jets

      That’s a great question for Shane directly! We are just the social media team. Shane does answer questions when he get's back around to non members eventually so hang tight, FYI >>>> he does member ones daily!
      He just returned from overseas training techs and his inbox is slammed with requests. He is scheduling time each day again to answer techline orders. He does not have the bandwidth to provide free email replies as his schedule is full with shop customers, training schedules, and one on ones.
      There's good news though! Shane has 2 solutions for you. One is a deep dive one-on-one with him with video, email and phone support. The other is a "quick fan support" option when it's a quick answer and just helps support the time for him to stop wrenching or training and get you in the direction that a free video had you close. Thin wire with a pretty tuff fuzzy coating that does a good job and can be soaked in cleaner. Don't use steel wire from a wire brush. I use a brass brush that I keep stealing wires from. Brass will do the job safely. Hey, don't forget the toothpicks.

    FIRST: drill it out with a wire bit. THEN, find that it doesn't idle for S*, even worse than when the pilot was fully clogged. SOLUTION: Use welding wire stuck through your drilled out pilot, changing size of welding wire 'till it runs just right.

    I would buy a new carburetor because all of this isn't worth my time or the headache. FYI Change your air filter 3 times a summer when you pull the filter out, shop vac the whole filter box and take a small dry paint brush and remove all debris and vac again and install new filter making sure it is in the right way sealed tight around perimeter of filter. Gas can, make sure there is no debris floating in your gas can! If there is filter the gas into another container and rinse debris out of gas can and pour gas back in. Make sure you don't have dirt and debris where the spout screws on, keep it clean so nothing gets into the can when removing and installing spout when filling gas can. Same with the gas cap on mower or whatever you are using. If there is any debris floating in gas tank of mower, remove and rinse out like gas can. Use non- Ethanol fuel (always) if available in your area if not use a fuel stabilizer additive like Sta-bil to all your fuel. These are the keys to keep a perfect running lawn mower running perfect all the time..

    pushing steel through a brass jet isn't a good idea . . .if you're by the roadside anything is a good idea! The most convenient and effective for me has always been any can with a tube: wd40, carb clean, etc.
