    Kansas? Prog? Not sure what they are, but def not Prog

      Kansas has plenty of prog songs particularly earlier albums. Listen to Magnus Opus and tell me thats not prog with a straight face.

    • @kevhead1525
      @kevhead1525 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@synen I like early Kansas but they were not original. They were huge fans of prog. Particularly Yes and King Crimson. So they tried to make stuff like that. It's not a sleight on them. It's just stuff that came after and they did it well.

    • @1thommyberlin
      @1thommyberlin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kevhead1525 (and Skip) We'll disagree. Kansas saw themselves as a prog rock band, and with songs like 'Song for America' etc it is obvious that Prog is exactly where they belong. Yes there are rock elements, but that's fully allowed (y'know.... because prog IS rock music), and having seen them and Rush several times - the two formost Prog bands from our side, I'd say Kansas were far more naturally a prog band than was Rush - who started off in the Led Zepplin area, and didn't actually get to prog (IMO) until Tom Sawyer....

    • @jimsanderson4180
      @jimsanderson4180 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@1thommyberlin Surely you jest! “Tom Sawyer” marked the beginning of the end of Rush’s Prog period. “Caress of Steel”, “2112”, “Hemispheres”, & “A Farewell to Kings” are the heart of their progressive period.

    Camel's "A live record" is truly phenomenal! What a remarkable band that was. "Lady Fantasy" is incredible on it and the rest as well. Recorded in 74, 75 and 77. It also boasts a great production and sound that makes love to the ears. Can't praise it enough!

    My favorite #1 Live album ... Genesis Live, It was the first Genesis I had EVER heard, back then when there were 'record shops" there was one close by that specialized in "imports" Yes was my favorite band at the time and I was always hopeful there would be a new release and was always looking for Yes "style" of music. I walked into the shop and the beginning of "Watcher Of The Skies" had already started (the opening keyboard part) I missed the opening applause, I liked what I heard and by the end of "Watcher" I was hooked, I asked the shop owner who it was he told me Genesis, where are they (he had albums lined up on the wall to display them proper) he pointed over there I saw 3 Albums I said which one were you just playing he said the Live album.
    I swear my jaw dropped to the floor...I had never heard live sound so good I couldn't believe it was live. I bought all 3 albums and Yes was now my second favorite band!

    I love the way you gesticulate, very elegant and expressive. Over here in Europe we‘re told that the British don‘t gesticulate - you could easily out-gesticulate any Italian fishmonger.

    Great list thanks for sharing! My favourites would be:
    1) VdGG - Rockpalast 2005
    2) Pink Floyd - Live at Pompeii
    3) Gentle Giant - Playing the Fool
    4) Robert Wyatt - Drury Lane 1974
    5) Roxy Music - Viva
    6) Gong - Live, etc.
    7) King Crimson - USA (especially the expanded version with Starless)
    8) Jethro Tull - MSG 1978
    9) Camel - A Live Record
    10) Hawkwind - Space Ritual

    • @theworldaccordingto4555
      @theworldaccordingto4555 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good list, I like it! If you are including DVDs then there are some fantastic KC live vids and live albums from the Belew era to the last line-up. Pompeii is a great choice, defo on my list. And Space Ritual is still on my playlist.
      Some great live VdGG albums have come out over the last 2 decades or so. The Charisma box set has some great live gigs in it, plus the VdGG - After The Flood Live at the BBC double cd is a fave of mine.
      The KC box sets and 'Collectors Series' have some fantastic live concert recordings in them.

    Excellent list, Barry, and I agree with many of your choices, especially "Seconds Out," "Yessongs," and "Bursting Out," all of which are in my own top 5. I was also delighted by your choice of Pictures at an Exhibition, but surprised not to hear a mention of "Welcome Back My Friends..." (it would be my own number one). A truly enjoyable presentation, and thank you!

    A little surprised that Renaissance’s ‘Live at Carnegie Hall’ didn’t make the list, and I’d replace Exit Stage Left with the earlier Rush live album, but otherwise a fine list.

    1) Camel - A Live Record
    2) Gentle Giant - Playing the Fool
    3) Renaissance - Live at the Carnegie Hall
    4) Barclay James Harvest - Live
    5) Genesis - Seconds Out
    6) Rush - Rush in Rio
    7) Marillion - La Gazza Ladra
    8) IQ - Stage
    9) Riverside - Reality Dream
    10) Big Big Train - Merchants of Light
    Bursting Out by Jethro Tull and Secret World Live by Peter Gabriel also come very close.

    This is an interestng selection, and it's great to see Gentle Giant get a mention -- that is one fine live album. I'd definitely have "Welcome Back My Friends..." in there rather than "Pictures...", and....well, Genesis were my intro to prog rock, their "Trick of the Tail" being my first bona fide prog album, but...dare I say it? I've never cared that much for "Seconds Out" and can't see why it gets so much praise. I find the sound a bit thin, the guitars too far down the mix and just lacking in general excitement and verve. I much prefer the 1974 "Genesis Live" release, which I find much beefier, scrappier and wins by virtue of having a cracking live version of "The Knife", one of the absolute best live versions of a song ever mostly due to Hackett's blinding pyrotechnics.

    • @johnwilliamson3981
      @johnwilliamson3981 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Welcome Back..." definitely has its moments. "Tarkus" and "Karn Evil 2nd Impression" (with the synthetic steel drums) are just great. Live "Lucky Man" is a turkey. Missing are the layer upon layer of bass, guitars and backing vocals heard in the studio original.

    For me, 801 Live should’ve made the list. This blistering disk features all the quirkiness of Brian Eno and Phil Mananera backed by a jaw-dropping rhythm section. Best version of Baby’s on Fire ever heard.

    If you had to limit yourself to just one ELP album in this list, it needed to be WELCOME BACK, MY FRIENDS... PICTURES is a very good live album - uncannily so, really - but WBMF is the same band operating at a much higher level only about three years later. SECONDS OUT is one of my favorites. EXIT...STAGE LEFT is very, very good but there's something about how it sounds that rubs me the wrong way.

    • @Frank_nwobhm

    I agree with most of that list. The Floyd's 'Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live 1980-81' sounds great. Porcupine Tree's 'Anesthetize' (Tilburg shows) and 'Coma Divine' are also fan favourites. King Crimson's got a bunch, too numerous to mention.

    It was published late (though there were *many* bootlegs out there), but "The Night Watch" from King Crimson is the best live album ever. In fact, if I had a magic lamp, one of my wishes would be to go there. Just astonishing playing.
    Also, I'd chose Genesis "Live" over "Seconds Out", but it's a great album at any rate.
    Finally, I'd have included Magma Live 1975. Just amazing.

    Thankyou so much for yet another magnificent selection. A number are in my personal collection for many years and yes, probably also in my top ten live prog albums too. Some others I've not heard before, so definitely time to get exploring further😉 Probably my favourite live prog album is Vital by Van Der Graaf Generator. On first listening, it seems very off kilter and quite unlike most of the studio versions. But once it sinks in, it becomes apparent just what an amazing tour de force this band was. Nic Potter's bass, for example, is quite unlike anything else that has gone before (or since!). Remarkable.

  • @davecomstock9544
    @davecomstock9544 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great list. I've been a fan of most of these bands for decades, but don't have a lot of these live albums. I'll second PT's Anesthetize, although I'd classify them as progressive metal -- just got tickets to their farewell tour (minus Colin Edwin) -- and the recent King Crimson live releases (I have the 5-CD Audio Diary and Live at Shepherds Bush Empire, which are both excellent), but also toss in the remastered version of Marillion's Thieving Magpie/La Gazza Ladra, several by Fish, Peter Gabriel's Plays Live, Anathema's Universal, No-Man's Love & Endings, Karnataka's Strange Behaviour, Enchant's Live At Last, Gazpacho's A Night At Loreley, Neal Morse's So Many Roads, and RPWL's A Show Beyond Man And Time.
    And that's omitting the prog metal live albums, which could be a list all on its own: Within Temptation, Sieges Even, Vanden Plas, Riverside, Dream Theater, Katatonia, etc.
    I'm glad I'm not the only one who keeps album stickers...

    YES on YESSONGS. It was "And You and I on CTTE where I became an major fan and it was "STARSHIP TROOPER" of YESSONGS that I became a Super Fan, and went to the top of my Bucket List of Bands to see. Since they didn't tour in NYC/NJ/Phila PA in '73 which was my 1st year of my concert journey (Seeing Procol Harum x 2 on 4/21/73), I jumped at the 1st show in the area which happened on 2/16/74 (evening show) @ the Spectrum for there TALES/CTTE concert. It still my all time favorite YES show of my x 10 which includes seeing on 6/21/79 (# 4 of my 10) sitting in Row # 2 also @ the Spectrum while performing "In the Round" . If wasn't for my x 4 WHO Shows w/ Keith Moon at his PERFECT PERFORMING PROWESS, YES and there TALES line-up would be the GREATEST live band of my Life-Time!! PS: But being # 2 ain't so bad, right???

    Great video, as ever. It may seem too late for prog but I love the second half (ie sides 3 and 4) of Genesis, Three Sides Live (UK version). If you ignore Misunderstanding it is a brilliant prog line up with their last great prog song (One for the Vine) plus awesome versions of In the Cage/Cinema Show (medley), The Fountain of Salmacis (from 1978) and It/Watcher of the Skies (from 1976 with Hackett and Bruford on top form). If this was a single album it'd be my fave live prog LP. Heresy maybe, but I think it's better than Seconds Out! Just has more energy.

    Pressure Points by Camel is a flawless rendition of various tracks from Nude, Stationary Traveller and The Snow goose. I'd have this on the list. Also A Show of Hands by Rush and The Thieving Magpie by Marrilion fronted by Fish are superb variants of their respective studio albums. Not forgetting also Free Live in it's cardboard envelope cover. - views from Phil Tennant a seventies and eighties British Prog rock fanatic. 65 years old and still playing vynil albums I've had since I was 15 years old. Live dates by Wishbone Ash is another. I could go on and on.

    Great list, and loads of other great albums in the comments, as expected.
    I wish that Focus Live had been a double; interesting that in teh CD age some of those aloder albums have smefantastic additins to them - like the Camel and Kansas albums.
    If there is a live soundboard from the Topographic Oceans tour that would be perhaps the one thing - that would make me buy the album gain if included in a 50th anniversary version next year - tough I'd go fo it now as a stand alone, or as a set with other archive soundboard quality releases - such as the rest of the shows that made up Yesshows.

      I agree about Live Tapes by BJH....although I'm not sure everyone would agree that it is prog. I think it probably is....sweeping keyboards and searing guitar, but less complex than some more obvious proggy bands.

      Yeah I think the Supertramp is a very worthy addition too. Again, not typical typical prog.... but all the more reason to love it. And YesSongs..... hmm... for a band with such a great live reputation, I don't think it does them justice. Mind, I'm going by the original vinyl version.

I would have added Genesis Live, as I was reacquainted with it just before Christmas, as it's a collection of 5 phenomenal pieces of work. But I've not connected at all with your other choices, but that's the beauty of it.... If we were all in total agreement there wouldn't be these wonderful formats. Enjoyable post... thank you 👍

    I haven’t heard all these albums, but ELP Welcome Back… is such a solid release, with impeccable sound, really capturing what a whole ELP show would be like when they were at their height. It’s virtuosic and at the same time intimate, Featuring mostly songs from Brain Salad Surgery since that was the tour, and also Tarkus, lots of improvisation and variation on great tunes like Take A Pebble and The Sherrif, and stunning versions of the Karn Evil 9 trilogy. I was so glad to see them in Toronto on the Works tour sans orchestra in 1977.

    Probably my favorite prog live album is Genesis Live from 1973, which I got as an import in the US in the mid/late 70s. Not certain if it was ever released in the US or what. The version of "The Knife" on that recording is hard to ignore.

    The magnificent GG, live playing the fool is certainly up there but the Yessongs recording is far too flawed to be number one unless you are blinded by the magnificence of early Yes. Listened to it the other day - a copy I bought on the last day of my O levels, no less - sounds like its off a mike at the back of the room. Nuurgh. Best Prog Live? - Caravan and the New Symphonia, 1973, without doubt. Beautifully captured performance by a band at the top of their game with a light orchestra backing - Ultra prog and ultimately wonderful - check it out progsters!

      @jeffreyterwilliger3089 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TransAtlantic is not a 'classic' prog act, rather, a newer supergroup (Ha Ha active 22 years now, boy are we old) comprised of Neal Morse, Mike Portnoy, Roine Stolt and Pete trewavas. And if you discount any "classic" ond "popular" factors, it would be no. 1 - on music, performance and production.

      I don’t know if it’s better than Yessongs, but it has “Gates of Delirium” live which makes it essential. Ritual was pretty damn good too.

    Good list- agree with most of your choices.For me Seconds out , Bursting Out and Playing the Fool will always be top of my list because unlike many rock groups mentioned all the tracks on both these albums far surpass the studio versions.Exit stage Left is excellent also but I am not convinced Rush sounded better live than in the studio.Ditto Yessongs although it is a great overview of Yes's glory years and I prefer the live version of "And You and I".Anyway this is my list from best to worst although apart from the top 3 the others might move up or down depending what mood I'm in
    1)Genesis:Seconds Out(Even without the piano intro, the version of Firth of Fifth is their best version)
    2)Jethro Tull :Bursting Out(The live rendition of Thick as a Brick and Aqualung in particular sound so much more dynamic than the studio version)
    3)Gentle Giant:Playing The Fool (I love the way they have radically re arranged most of the songs especially the Octopus medley)
    4)ELP: Pictures at and exhibition (A great representation of what they were about live)
    5)Genesis: Genesis Live (The version of Watcher is the best ever version that I've heard anyway)
    6)Barclay James Harvest:Live Tapes (are they Prog?-who cares- love this album)
    7)Yes: Yessongs
    8)Camel: A Live Record
    9)Rush:Exit Stage Left
    10)Kansas: Two For The Show

    I actually find value in Yesshows from 1978 more than Yessongs, which I know is roundly considered superior. The reason being is that the Gates of Delirium version on Yesshows rocks a lot harder than the studio version. I used to be obsessed with that particular live version. As with Yessongs, I prefer the studio versions to all the tracks on it.

      I actually have to amend this comment! I recently listened to Yessongs again after hearing the praises of it in this video and comment section. I 100% take back that I prefer the album version of all the songs. Wow, I dont know what led me to this conclusion. A lot of the songs are better versions or refreshingly altered. I also remember loving Rick wakemans solo piece after hearing it again. Epic and awesome stuff!

    I have five of those, and in two cases it's my favourite album by the band. For anyone who is curious, the Progeny 2CD issue is pretty much an alternative Yessongs and well worth any Yes fan's money.

    Are King Crimson prog? If so Starless and Bible Black is mostly live. And USA? and live tracks on Red? The list goes on !! I sat through Yes at the Free Trade Hall and Hardrock but I have to say pretty ordinary by the time Rick got out his silver cloak (even though he probably had his tongue in cheek).

    Great list from some great prog. bands. I do own an original vinyl copy of the Camel album and a 2 disc version with bonus tracks, which is a real treat. It is unfortunate that some of the live recording techniques were a bit "dodgey' , compared to more recent live recordings. P.S.-"PFM's Cook" should have made the list...(maybe next time it will go up to 11 best???) Cheers Mate

    I will admit to not have as broad an experience with prog music as you have. That said, I didn't hear where any one of a number of King Crimson live albums fit on your list. I quite enjoy "For Absent Lovers," the last show with the 1981-1984 version. But there's also all of the live material on The Great Deceiver, the ProjeKcts box set, and any of a number of live shows that they released through one outlet or another.

    This is just my preference , but I would choose ' Live 73 ' over ' Seconds out ' amazing as it is. As a low price album I bought it along with 'Real to Reel ' - Marillion on the same day. They were my first forays into progressive rock because the Misplaced Childhood tour was coming to town (my first studio prog album). My musical life changed from that day in 1986. Remember laughing at my friends. How can Genesis be compared to Marillion. Invisible touch , That's All etc. Bought all the older Genesis albums within weeks !!!!!

    My list would be very different. Number 1 would definitely be Magma with their "Theusz Hamtaahk Trilogy" from 2000. A triple CD, each CD consisting of one track only ("Theusz Hamtaahk", "Ẁurdah Ïtah" and "Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh"). There is a video version of the album too; here a link to the video for the first CD.
    th-cam.com/video/m6p6-hWauK8/w-d-xo.html
    Number 2 would be Van der Graaf with their 1978 double live album "Vital". An absolutely brutal album.
    Number 3 would be Henry Cow with their 1976 double album "Concerts".
    "Yessongs" would definitely NOT be on my list; the album is renowned for having lots of studio overdubs which in my opinion is a no-go for live albums.
