I started watching thinking that my favourite debut album would be overlooked, though I guessed that The Doors and The Velvet Underground would be there, but you didn't let me down. Number Six - Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division. Thank you!
When I learned Jimi's "3rd Stone from the sun" and combined it with Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" - I realised that Syd had ripped off "Steptoe and Son" and Jimi had rewrote "Coronation Street" TV theme tune. Freak Out!
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells Wishbone Ash - Wishbone Ash Van Halen - Van Halen Blue Öyster Cult - Blue Öyster Cult The Doors - The Doors Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath Budgie - Budgie R.E.M. - Murmur Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill The Band - Music From Big Pink No order really. Just something for everyone to investigate if you haven't already. Have a great rest of your day!
Blue Öyster Cult's first isn't as well-known, it seems, as some of the others on your list, but it's definitely an exceptional debut album. One thing that's great about it is that it didn't set trends because the lyrics were so weird on most of the songs that it instead defined the uniqueness of the band for a while. The songwriting and multiple-guitar arrangements are just some of the rewards of repeated listenings.
Re BOC I think Buck Dharma was heavily influenced by the sound of Robby Krieger and yes certainly a great album. i never get tired of listening to them.
My thoughts on my list (I hope someone is interested): Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (1973). A young guy that wasn't very well known and socially awkward somehow makes an album almost by himself that broke rules, became a soundtrack for a classic movie and become (sort of) the foundation for a huge record company. That's something. The story is interesting but the music stands on it's own. He has done plenty albums after it. Many of them strong but this is the masterpiece in many peoples minds. Wishbone Ash - Wishbone Ash (1970). A band that still puts out music. They never really reached a really big audience but big enough to continue with more albums than most. If you are a nerd of guitar this album might be for you. Van Halen - Van Halen (1978). Not many guitarists have had more copycats than Eddie Van Halen but it's not all about that. Everyone performs strong here, the production is fantastic and while being a albums for guitarists it's also a great partyalbum for the casual rock fan. Blue Öyster Cult - Blue Öyster Cult (1972). Like Wishbone Ash this album is not a bonfide classic but it is very enjoyable and original. Most people think the band gradually got better and maybe so but there is a certain style to this debut that stands on it's own. The Doors - The Doors (1967). A real classic. Most big bands of the time was english.. The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who, Cream, The Rolling Stones but The Doors was american and their debut could, to me, compare to any of it's contemporaries. If not their best album - Certainly a very strong start. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (1970). Another classic. Wishbone Ash and Blue Öyster Cult has reached their fair share of success but Black Sabbath has become the kings of heavy metal. Like Blue Öyster Cult many think the band got even better but this is being considered as the start of a massive genre and that's quite something. Budgie - Budgie (1971). The albumcover is pink with some weird bird on a horse. What to think? Don't think - Listen. Budgie is like a musical cousin to Blue Öyster Cult or Black Sabbath. To me they have a seriously underrated rhythm section and the heavy riffs are certainly there. R.E.M. - Murmur (1983). R.E.M. has plenty of famous songs but early R.E.M. was something else. If you think Everybody Hurts, Losing My Religion or Daysleeper is speaking for their whole catalog, you are wrong. I think many people who knows several hits have no clue this album or the one's that followed even exists. Sort of a shame. I can appreciate much from R.E.M. over the years and if you never "got them". This might do the trick. Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill (1972). I know music-nerds know about Steely Dan but they are not a band the causal listener knows much about. Listening to them.. I don't understand why. While being complicated music in a way it's very catchy and easy listening. Both Pop and Rock fans should be able to like this album very easily. The Band - Music From Big Pink (1968): These guys was mostly famous for being on some of Bob Dylans most beloved records (to this day!) and wanted to bransch out on their own. Eric Clapton talks more about this band than his own music and they are a bit of a rarity musically. Cream, Hendrix Experience, The Doors, The Beatles and soon Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath along with many others was toward a certain direction musically. These guys weren't. They took a left path and made some damn good music on the way. It's not really Bob Dylan nor say Hendrix but like a missing piece of the puzzle. I didn't get them at first but with time I really liked it and this album is one of the best.
A brilliant review. Thank you for including “Are You Experienced”, “In The Court Of The Crimson King” and “The Doors”. I would have included the first Emerson Lake And Palmer album. You are absolutely spot on regarding “In The Court Of The Crimson King”. I’m old enough and fortunate enough to have seen King Crimson, Jimi Hendrix and The Doors live in the late 60s. Those performances were stunning and revelatory. I was never the same. Bravo!
I was home from college and walked into a record store at Syracuse University. They just happened to be playing In the Court of the Crimson King when I walked in. I bought the record without any second thoughts. Probably the most important and wonderful impulse buy of my life. Still ranks as one of my favorite all time albums and is consistently in my rotation. In fact I think I'll play it right now.
Led Zeppelin's debut. We went from zero Led Zeppelin to max Led Zeppelin in an instant. Honorable mentions to Hendrix, Van Halen, Pretenders, Boston, U2, Elvis Costello, King Crimson, Black Sabbath, Lyrnyrd Skynyrd, the Police, the Doors, and the Cars. Thanks, Barry.
Some great choices! My favorite debut would be Chicago Transit Authority. Boston's debut is outstanding. Steely Dan's Can't Buy a Thrill is another of my favorites.
Absolutely agree 100%. The Cars could have stopped at that album and said "you know what, this is as good as it gets, that'll do us". But would never have been privileged to hear the sublime" Touch and Go " from" Panorama " If there was a weak song on the debut, for me it is" I'm in touch with your world ". " Moving in Stereo "and" All Mixed Up "should always be listened to together.
If you had not chosen In the Court of the Crimson King as THE best debut album, I would have come to your house, knocked on your door and then run away.
A well chosen list and argued with articulate flair...but somewhat surprised to not see the Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks. Still, a superb short list!
Well done again! Can't argue with those, although some are not bands I followed but certainly acknowledge their works for the same reasons you explained. Please carry on. I like these top tens.
🇨🇦 Greetings from Canada! 🇨🇦 Sitting on my couch, sippin’ a beer, surfin’ TH-cam...and your awesome channel appears! A few hours later, and I feel like we’re old friends! I love the way you articulate your thoughts on the music that ignites your soul...and happily tapped “subscribe”. Sitting in a pub with you, enjoying several pints, and chatting away into the wee small hours about music would be time very well spent, I’m sure! Anyways, great list! Like others have mentioned, I was surprised you didn’t include Zeppelin 1, but that’s neither here nor there - it is, after all, YOUR list...! One addition I might make, perhaps an honourable mention if not a replacement of one already included, would be Jeff Buckley’s “Grace”, which regularly gets played front to back in my home. Again, great list! Thanks for putting together these videos! Hope all is well in your world, and you and yours are staying safe during these crazy days of “Pandemic-alooza”...!

Hi Barry! My favourite era for quality rock music is the 70's so I've chosen my favourites from this decade. Difficult to put them in any order but my number one is: Television - Marquee Moon. Others that I consider classics are: Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill , Santana - Santana , Dire Straits - Dire Straits , Montrose - Montrose , The Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus , Kate Bush - The Kick Inside , Boston - Boston , Rush - Rush and the debut album from my favourite band: Blue Oyster cult - Blue Oyster Cult.
1. Mountain - Climbing Incredibly talentend and overlooked songwriter in Felix Pappalardi - a forgotten genious, but in the late 60:ies and early 70:ies he was everywhere. Mountain is so much more than their signature track "Mississippi Queen" - just listen to "Nantucket sleighride" (not on this album though) 2. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin I This had a huge impact on me when I listened to it the first time, and I don't think I have listened to an album more times, and I never get tired of i - never ever! 3. Joy Division - Unknown pleasures Our common denominator 4. Pretenders -Pretenders Awesome guitar rock - RIP James & Pete 5. Three man army - A third of a lifetime 6. Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdome come Only released two albums but both monumental 7. Dust - Dust Overlooked talented band with great hard rock album 8. Pink Floyd - Piper at the gates of dawn Different issues in US & UK. The US issue has "See Emily Play" on it but there are more tracks on the UK issue. I have original issues of both though - lucky meee!!! 9. Judas Priest - Rocka Rolla Monumental -the best they ever did 10. UFO - UFO I Listen to the cover of Eddie Cochran's "C'mon Everybody" and Price Kajuku, the energy and hunger of Phil Mogg has never been seen since Some bonus albums: 11. Humble Pie - As safe as yesterday is Too much talent to be ignored 12.Queen -Queen I Unfortunately it went downhill from there but the next two albums are good too, then they became too theatrical for my liking 13 Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath 14. The Stooges - The Stooges Well, er, another common denominator 15. MC5 - Back in the USA Their first studio album
I usually don't comment on things but this resonated with me. Having mostly seen your videos with a prog rock perspective, I was expecting a lot of Genesis/Floyd/etc in here but I have to say that there is a wonderful diversity in your choices. I can't argue with 8 of your selections - maybe not top 10 but all extremely good - and the other two are the Zappa and Presley albums which I don't know so I can't judge. Thank you for that - it helps me believe that I can trust the things that you recommend. Interesting that John Cale is involved in 3 of the albums and also another that I would consider - The Modern Lovers first album
i agree Boston best, then the cars, then bad company, the doors, then foreigner, pearl jam 10, van halen, Lynyrd Skynyrd Poronouced,Led Zeppelin, Hendrix
Great content as always and covered some of my favourite albums. Thought you might mention "Queen" or "Sultans of Swing" but whilst I may not always agree with your opinion, you continue to give convincing arguments for your picks. Thank you!
Leonard Cohen is a great choice, it would be on my list if I made one, I'm not a good list maker when it comes to the best of or most favorite. So much excellent music to choose from but I enjoy your lists as well as your reasons and thoughts on them.
My personal top 10 list: 1. The Velvet Underground feat. Nico 2. Piper At the Gates of Dawn - Pink Floyd 3. The Doors - The Doors 4. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin 5. Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield 6. Please Please Me - The Beatles 7. Music From the Big Pink - The Band 8. Tales of Mystery and Imagination - The Alan Parsons Project 9. Dire Straits - Dire Straits 10. Grace - Jeff Buckley
1.The Doors 2.In The Court Of The Crimson King 3.Never Mind The Bollocks 4.Horses 5.Five Leaves Left 6.Pieces Of The Sky 7.Marquee Moon 8.The Modern Lovers 9.Forces of Victory 10.Grace
Just by coincidence (?) three albums on your list involve John Cale (Horses, Stooges, VU) who also produced another remarkable debut for Jonathan Richman - The Modern Lovers, which is also a classic (recorded in 1972 but released in 1976, Pablo Picasso and Roadrunner alone are worth to have this album).
Smith and her band did not get in with Cale in the slightest. They rejected every suggestion he made. Eventually, Cale asked Smith why she hired him as producer. Smith said it was because Cale's records always sounded so clear. "You fool" said Cale "you should have hired my engineer in that case!" Oh, and Cale also did the Happy Mondays' debut....
Hi Barry, What an incredible list. I will not even attempt... I find yours covers many genre and cannot dispute any one of your nominations to the Top 10. Especially the Doors and In the Court of the Crimson King... which would be the template of the prog for without this there would be no ELP, Genesis or Yes. PS - Have you received the new Mothers box set. Wishing you a great week. God bless and keep well, Tino
The Boomtown Rats eponymous lp from 1977 and Liverpool band Clinic's Internal Wrangler (2000) are two of my favourites. Love XTC but their first two albums are pretty mixed. Great channel btw.
The Doors and Are You Experienced were both in the group that popped into my mind. Ambrosia, Black Sabbath, Boston, Chicago, Heart, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Montrose and Van Halen. Oops, that's eleven. Maybe I need to consider some of the stuff you talk about that is outside my usual interest areas.
Nice idea and great choices. The debut albums from Patti Smith, Jimmy Hendrix.King Crimson, Velvet Underground. The Doors are also among the best ever written. I would add also the fantastic Led Zeppelin first album. Once again an excellent list.
Martin Hannet truly was the George Martin of Joy Division. It's in it's own universe. I'm glad you added Leonard Cohen as well. 'Stories Of The Street' is my favorite Leonard Cohen song. Joy Division/New Order are my favorites but for debut albums I have to pick The Stone Roses.
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with a couple picks, but your recognition makes me want to search them out. Honorable mention would be "My Aim is True" by Elvis Costello & The Attractions, "Will the Wolf Survive?" Los Lobos.
Great list. I would've put 'Are You Experienced' as #1 or #2. I know it's a tough call and subjective. However, Jimi changed the course of rock guitar for another 55+ years. Thanks for your insightful work!
10. Kate Bush- The Kick Inside. Beautiful songs and voice with thoughtful lyrics. The beginning of a great 5 album run. 9. Devo- Are We not Men: We are Devo. Very unique, creative and fun to listen to. Fantastic production by Eno. 8. Boston- Boston. Clear, clean, powerful, sonic rock n roll. Several classic songs. Every song is very good to great. 7. Jimi Hendrix- Are you Experienced? Ground breaking instrumentation, especially guitar of course. Classic songs. Extremely influential. 6. King Crimson- In the Court of the Crimson King. 21st century schizoid man may be the best first song by any band. Progressive genius. 5. Led Zeppelin- Led Zeppelin (1). Great hard rock with psychedelic edge. A new sound that led to the legendary career. Also very influential. 4. Pink Floyd- Piper at the Gates of Dawn. True psychedelic cleverness with Syd Barrett when he was still in his head enough to create great music. 3. The Doors- The Doors. Must listen for anyone who enjoys music. It's about freedom, life experience, darkness and drugs and so much more. 2. Eno- Here Comes the Warm Jets. As creative as an album can get in every aspect and one of the best guitar solos ever by Robert Fripp on Baby's on Fire. Extremely influential. 1. The Cars- The Cars. I've literally have heard every song on Pandora rotations. Can't say that about any other album All the songs are great.
Hi very interesting thanks, I would consider the thoughts of emerlist davjak by the Nice and Elp's first, Btw the nice toured towards the end of 1967 with Hendrix. Pink Floyd Amen corner and the Move ffs. That must have been a hell of a night! Cheers
Not read through the comments, so apologies in advance for any duplication.. ELP (self titled) CAMEL (self titled) Chris Squire (Fish out of Water) Steve Hackett (Voyage of the Acolyte) Bo Hansson (Lord of the Rings) Mike Oldfield (Tubular Bells) Plus a much lesser known band .. Autumn (Oceanworld) sadly their only offering, but damn good... A mention for a couple of not so proggy, not so rocky debuts.. Christopher Cross (self titled) Suzanne Vega (self titled) Another great post Barry 👍
Please please me, the 1975, piper at the gates of dawn, the libertines are among my personal favourites but certainly there are some superb collections here that cannot be argued like king crimson and the velvets.
Great list , I am very interested in listening to a few of these to expand my taste in other categories of music, thank you for videos I enjoy your outlook on music as a whole
Great list, great commentary. Mine would be different, but that's me. I have to run down a copy of Unknown Pleasures though - I've never heard it and am looking forward to correcting that. Thanks!
Your list is excellent! Here is mine in chronological order: The Beatles Please Please Me, Pink Floyd Piper at the Gates of Dawn, The Doors I, Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced, , Led Zeppelin I, The Pretenders, The Cars, Joy Division Unknown Pleasures, My Bloody Valentine Isn't Anything, Portishead Dummy.
Great list! Here’s mine: - Nina Hagen Band - Nina Hagen Band - Roxy Music - Roxy Music - Heart - Dreamboat Annie - Dire Straits - Dire Straits - Kate Bush - The Kick Inside - Blondie - Blondie - UK - UK - Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant - Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus - Pretenders - Pretenders - Steely Dan - Can’t Buy A Thrill Ok, that’s 11 albums. What can you do…
Great picks. I would also consider... Van Halen--Van Halen The Cars--The Cars Pearl Jam--Ten The Smiths--The Smiths Boston--Boston Black Sabbath--Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin--Led Zeppelin I
A nicely argued list. Of course, I disagree with about half of it but isn't that the point? For example, the best rock album ever made and therefore the best debut is the Modern Lovers album. Or so I've thought for more than forty years. Much of it was also produced by John Cale. Other great debuts, in no particular order, include Pink Flag by Wire, Entertainment by the Gang of Four, Talking Heads 77, and--the baby of the bunch--T H E by Tricot.
I've enjoyed all of your lists so far. It's your gig, you set up the TH-cam account etc. I disagreed with your choice in the Roxy Music worst to best, but know that subjectivity is the bright light of navigation here. And so, of course, I'm going to suggest Roxy Music's debut should be on this list because it was so startling, so different and so unprecedented. Surely Dr Feelgood's 'Down by the Jetty' has to be circling near any top ten debuts list. I'd point as well to Weezer's 'Blue' album, plus The Chameleons' debut 'Script of the Bridge'; Kate Bush's 'The Kick Inside' has certainly got to be considered too. But your list clearly reflects a certain taste in music and it's not a bad list at all. Okay, you're caught up with the Crimsons, some of it revolves around doors, you take joy in division, I'm sure even your own mother wouldn't freak out at Frank - though it might be a strange experience. How come you didn't mention Elvis nicking his cover design from The Clash? Interesting post. I'm never going to see a 'best of' list anywhere I fully agree with. In the mean time this was pretty good. Keep doing your lists.
A bit out of the era of your picks, but the next class of amazing debuts has to include Boston and The Cars eponymous releases and Pretty Hate Machine by Nine Inch Nails.
A sadly but understandably overlooked debut album was Moby Grape. The 12 songs were all released as A/B sides on singles and at the time comments were this album pulled it off. They followed the with a set at Monterey topped only by Otis Redding (the prior year I think). Then the wheels came off as the follow up album was not as strong. And then the "we had a manager that" happened and they were not allowed to perform under their name or even play their music live. So a great rock album was pretty much forgotten. Do give it a listen.
I was old enough to attend the Hyde Park gig although I was luckier still to attend a free arts festival at Goldsmith's College, South London a couple of days before. King Crimson played on the back lawn of the college with an accompanying light show and strobes. Amazing times.
Fine feature as always Shout out to "Wishbone Ash" a brilliant debut record from what were four young lads Pioneered the twin guitar concept before the Allman Brothers did it A classic debut record
That "Marquee Moon" didn't make your list is a wonder. It is a debut album so utterly astonishing that it near completely overshadowed the remainder of Television's career.
Impossible to make a definitive list, but he did a good job. Love Joy Division at #6. 5 glaring omissions for me: The Clash, The Who Sing My Generation. Never Mind the Bollocks, My Aim is True, and Piper at the Gates of Dawn .
Everyone has their own taste in Genres I respectfully agree with your choices 👍👍 These days, the technology is just not the same anymore And going to see a band is hit&miss in the 50’60’& 70’ was a different experience LIVE WHAT YOU SAW IS WHAT YOU HEARD I personally have Transit Authority in my top 10 You Sir most definitely know your music and bands TY
No arguments with the choices so thoughtfully presented in this vid, or those in the comments section. As worthy as they all are, for me the most surprising and mind bending first listen to a debut album was a midnight listen to the newly released Violent Femmes debut. Stunning at the time. I’ll never forget that experience.
How, oh how did you forget to include Fever Tree's debut album on this list? Ah, well. I still appreciate your intelligent and witty reviews in spite of this glaring omission. Cheers!
I think part of what makes his videos so great is his knack for striking just the right balance between the obvious and the unexpected. To achieve this, seemingly obvious picks must sometimes be omitted. Besides, if I remember right, he didn't rank Led I all that high in the band's discography. My personal ranking of Led Zeppelin albums has I and II alternating in the top spot...
@@HuddshouseofRockNMetal I disagree, I think their first album is their best and got progressively worse. Same with their concerts, I saw them four times, the first time they were second on the bill to B.B. King and they were great, by the last time in 1976 they were pretty bad and I left early.
So many excellent debut albums...here are two you didn't mention: CAPTAIN BEEFHEART AND THE MAGIC BAND-TROUT MASK REPLICA and PINK FLOYD-THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN. Thanks for a great show as always!
I must say though that "Trout mask replica" was not Captain Beefhart's debut album, that goes to "Safe as milk" which also would be in my top-20 list of "best debut albums"
Brilliantly done - some picks in there of which I’m not familiar with or don’t know so will be checking those out. On the whole, cannot disagree with these mentions. Joy Division was a superb choice. Probably the best and definitely my fave of the albums listed My top 5 debuts, slightly more indie sounding perhaps, goes like this: 1 The Stone Roses 2 Joy Division 3 Oasis 4 Black Sabbath 5 Led Zeppelin
1) Are You Experienced? 2) The Aerosol Grey Machine 3) The Sky Of Mind 4) Gish 5) Out Of The Cellar 6) Fogarty's Cove 7) Voyage Of The Acolyte 8) Core 9) ...And Then I Wrote 10) Ten
Dude, you sure chose the classy stuff of the 60ties. And my hat off to you for choosing the incredible CK album as number one. Have you heard the story of the painter of the cover? If you listen to Greg Lakes life album "Songs of a Lifetime" from 2013 he tells the story of this young gifted man , who apparently very shortly after died.
Can't argue with the top 3 (4) here, (I was going to suggest them as I was getting nervous that he had not gotten to the Doors, Hendrix, or KC yet...), but I would also like to toss in the Cars, The Police Outlandos d'Amour, and, of course, Led Zeppelin I. The intro to that album is possibly the greatest "we have arrived" moment in all of popular culture...
YIKES....How can Boston's debut album be missing from this list? It was amazing and blew everyone away, as the songs; guitars, and vocals we outstanding. Also, a lot can be said from for Heart's snd Van Halen's debut albums as all three above provided a rock sound never heard before. Also worth mentioning are Foreigner's and Bad Company's debut albums which both provided a new unique rock sound.
Glad Jimi Hendrix & Patti Smith are on this list, though many albums here I've not heard before. My top ten 1st studio albums are: Jimi Hendrix: Are You Experienced Big Country: The Crossing Talking Heads: '77 Marillion: Script For A Jester's Tear Melissa Etheridge: Melissa Etheridge Heart: Dreamboat Annie Yardbirds: For Your Love Goldfrapp: Felt Mountain Big Brother & The Holding Company: Big Brother & The Holding Company Jeff Beck (Group): Truth
I started watching thinking that my favourite debut album would be overlooked, though I guessed that The Doors and The Velvet Underground would be there, but you didn't let me down. Number Six - Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division. Thank you!
A dark, but wonderful album.
@@classicalbum There's a video out there of Henry Rollins raving about it as one of rock's greatest albums.
When I learned Jimi's "3rd Stone from the sun" and combined it with Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" - I realised that Syd had ripped off "Steptoe and Son" and Jimi had rewrote "Coronation Street" TV theme tune. Freak Out!

I agree with a lot of them
My favorite is Blue Oyster Cult

STEELY DAN , YOU ARE RIGHT ON THE MONEY
TUBULAR BELLS , DOORS , KICK INSIDE ...

I love the album pity most of the tracks have been ripped off from other artists
Good list but you forgot to include GnR's debut.
I love U2 but their first album is good but not a classic. Boston is very good for sure.

Dire straits
Excellent list, very well thought out! I would also add (honorary mentions?) Brian Eno’s Here comes the warm jets, and Roxy Music’s debut album...
Oooooh. I love Here Comes The Warm Jets. Great album.
Some great choices! My favorite debut would be Chicago Transit Authority. Boston's debut is outstanding. Steely Dan's Can't Buy a Thrill is another of my favorites.
Terry Kath was and his work created is what made him the best
Jimi Hendrix once quoted “he is the greatest Guitarist ever”
Agreed. Adding The Cars and Queen to your list would be my humble suggestion. 😊
The Cars first album is my favorite debut of all time.
Yes, flawless from start to finish.
That is a wonderful album.
Just jammed it the other day and forgot all the great songs on there.
Cars is definitely up there. My favorite debut record is Boston’s first album
Yes, great choices, and Foreigner's debut was also their best.
Absolutely agree 100%.
The Cars could have stopped at that album and said "you know what, this is as good as it gets, that'll do us".
But would never have been privileged to hear the sublime" Touch and Go " from" Panorama "
If there was a weak song on the debut, for me it is" I'm in touch with your world ".
" Moving in Stereo "and" All Mixed Up "should always be listened to together.
Epitaph is the single-most, beautifully-haunting prog rock song I've ever heard. It's especially relavent today.
If you had not chosen In the Court of the Crimson King as THE best debut album, I would have come to your house, knocked on your door and then run away.
I trust it would have been a very stern knock.
@@pkmcburroughs I trust the knock would have been in 13/4
Wind Cries Mary described as "whimsical"? Huh... I think it's one of Hendrix's most touching, wistful, and melancholy songs.
Emerson lake and palmers debut is my favourite 2nd is in the court
I always thought Santana's first album was a terrific debut effort and 50 years later, even more so.
Agreed
"The Allman Brothers Band"
A well chosen list and argued with articulate flair...but somewhat surprised to not see the Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks. Still, a superb short list!
A great list and I agree with them all!!
I noticed that John Cale was mentioned on at least 3 different albums.
Well done again! Can't argue with those, although some are not bands I followed but certainly acknowledge their works for the same reasons you explained. Please carry on. I like these top tens.
My top three:
1. King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King
2. Chicago - The Chicago Transit Authority
3. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
🇨🇦 Greetings from Canada! 🇨🇦
Sitting on my couch, sippin’ a beer, surfin’ TH-cam...and your awesome channel appears!
Great choices & video ( as always). I would include the 1st album from The Pretenders, Santana ,& 'How Will The Wolf Survive' by Los Lobos.
Pink Floyd - Piper at the gates of dawn . Television - Marquee Moon. Bad Company - Bad Co. Moby Grape and CSN
Never mind the bollocks, can't buy a thrill, safe as milk, you could go on.
@@24031965GAV Bollocks. Their first and only album. A statement and a half that blew away the cobwebs.

Some of These Debut Albums gets Some Hate, but They're Some Great Albums, In my Opinion.
Todd Rundgren's debut may have been RUNT; I'll have to check.....
I remember hearing the 1st Queen album in October 1973 and immediately started telling everyone that I'd never heard anything quite like it.
My favorite Band
Also BOC
But agree with your other choices as well Rock on Buddy
Has to be Boston number one. Start to finish, excellent.
1. Mountain - Climbing
Incredibly talentend and overlooked songwriter in Felix Pappalardi - a forgotten genious, but in the late 60:ies and early 70:ies he was everywhere. Mountain is so much more than their signature track "Mississippi Queen" - just listen to "Nantucket sleighride" (not on this album though)
2. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin I
This had a huge impact on me when I listened to it the first time, and I don't think I have listened to an album more times, and I never get tired of i - never ever!
3. Joy Division - Unknown pleasures
Our common denominator
4. Pretenders -Pretenders
Awesome guitar rock - RIP James & Pete
5. Three man army - A third of a lifetime
6. Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdome come
Only released two albums but both monumental
7. Dust - Dust
Overlooked talented band with great hard rock album
8. Pink Floyd - Piper at the gates of dawn
Different issues in US & UK. The US issue has "See Emily Play" on it but there are more tracks on the UK issue. I have original issues of both though - lucky meee!!!
9. Judas Priest - Rocka Rolla
Monumental -the best they ever did
10. UFO - UFO I
Listen to the cover of Eddie Cochran's "C'mon Everybody" and Price Kajuku, the energy and hunger of Phil Mogg has never been seen since
Some bonus albums:
11. Humble Pie - As safe as yesterday is
Too much talent to be ignored
12.Queen -Queen I
Unfortunately it went downhill from there but the next two albums are good too, then they became too theatrical for my liking
13 Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
14. The Stooges - The Stooges
Well, er, another common denominator
15. MC5 - Back in the USA
Their first studio album
What about Boston. Wasn't their debut album the highest debut of all time??
Not a fan but when it came out, one could not escape it.
This isn’t a Grammy list...
as a Teen growing up
in Boston at the time
I hated that album ~ sorry
did they have a SECOND album? in our lifetime?
i agree Boston best, then the cars, then bad company, the doors, then foreigner, pearl jam 10, van halen, Lynyrd Skynyrd Poronouced,Led Zeppelin, Hendrix
"Pastoral psychedelia". I like that. Always a pleasure to listen to you talk about music.
Black Sabbath (1970).....Given how important this album became to a whole genre of music, I was surprised not to see it listed.
Sabbath and Zeppelin for sure.
I have most of these; I got them when they were new. It never dawned on me that I had exceptional musical taste starting when I was 13.
Blue Oyster Cult debut album
I love their Black and White period and the great cover art
Interesting choices
Thanks
Great content as always and covered some of my favourite albums. Thought you might mention "Queen" or "Sultans of Swing" but whilst I may not always agree with your opinion, you continue to give convincing arguments for your picks. Thank you!
Leonard Cohen is a great choice, it would be on my list if I made one, I'm not a good list maker when it comes to the best of or most favorite. So much excellent music to choose from but I enjoy your lists as well as your reasons and thoughts on them.
My personal top 10 list:
1. The Velvet Underground feat. Nico
2. Piper At the Gates of Dawn - Pink Floyd
3. The Doors - The Doors
4. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
5. Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield
6. Please Please Me - The Beatles
7. Music From the Big Pink - The Band
8. Tales of Mystery and Imagination - The Alan Parsons Project
9. Dire Straits - Dire Straits
10. Grace - Jeff Buckley

Excellent top 10!! Two of my choices would be Nick Drake's five leaves left as well as van Morrison's astral weeks.😁
1.The Doors 2.In The Court Of The Crimson King 3.Never Mind The Bollocks 4.Horses 5.Five Leaves Left 6.Pieces Of The Sky 7.Marquee Moon 8.The Modern Lovers 9.Forces of Victory 10.Grace
Great list, Barry. Some classics on your list. Unknown Pleasures is wonderful and of course The Doors debut. Great stuff.
The Modern Lovers debut one of the very best albums of all time
Have to agree. "I'm Straight" has always been one of my favourite songs; it still makes me laugh every time I hear it.
Smith and her band did not get in with Cale in the slightest. They rejected every suggestion he made. Eventually, Cale asked Smith why she hired him as producer. Smith said it was because Cale's records always sounded so clear. "You fool" said Cale "you should have hired my engineer in that case!"
Oh, and Cale also did the Happy Mondays' debut....
Hi Barry,
What an incredible list.
God bless and keep well,
Tino
Unknown Pleasures and The Doors are very, very special to me, and were two albums critical in the shaping of my musical preferences today.
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with a couple picks, but your recognition makes me want to search them out. Honorable mention would be "My Aim is True" by Elvis Costello & The Attractions, "Will the Wolf Survive?" Los Lobos.
I sincerely consider Television's debut album 'Marquee Moon' to be THE greatest album ever made. Surprised it's not here
Marquee Moon &
the 1st Psychedelic Furs
Your right!!!
Agree
It is a great album.
Aerosal Grey Machine / Van Der Graaf Generator , Caravan / Caravan , Soft Machine / Soft Machine , Wishbone Ash / Wishbone Ash , Budgie / Budgie , Hawkwind / Hawkwind .6 great debut albums . 6 of my favourites .
Great list. I would've put 'Are You Experienced' as #1 or #2. I know it's a tough call and subjective. However, Jimi changed the course of rock guitar for another 55+ years. Thanks for your insightful work!
ZZ Tops first album is the best thing they've ever done. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pavlovs Dog, Rodriguez and Steely Dan all released incredible debuts
Pavlov's Dog! What a band! Their second was just as good as the first, if not better!
ZZ 1 was fine but I thought they improved on it with the next two. Nice to see someone appreciating it though.
I'm finally going to own a King Crimson album it appears, enjoyable walk!
Hi very interesting thanks, I would consider the thoughts of emerlist davjak by the Nice and Elp's first, Btw the nice toured towards the end of 1967 with Hendrix. Pink Floyd Amen corner and the Move ffs. That must have been a hell of a night! Cheers

CAMEL (self titled)
Chris Squire (Fish out of Water)
Steve Hackett (Voyage of the Acolyte)

Another great post Barry 👍
Please please me, the 1975, piper at the gates of dawn, the libertines are among my personal favourites but certainly there are some superb collections here that cannot be argued like king crimson and the velvets.
All good choices. Mine include U2, Pretenders, Cars, Van Halen, Chameleons...too many to mention
I've really enjoyed your vids, only just found you. Thanks.
Thanks!
A couple come to mind, Led Zeppelin 1, and Pearl Jam's Ten

Here is mine in chronological order: The Beatles Please Please Me, Pink Floyd Piper at the Gates of Dawn, The Doors I, Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced, , Led Zeppelin I, The Pretenders, The Cars, Joy Division Unknown Pleasures, My Bloody Valentine Isn't Anything, Portishead Dummy.

- Roxy Music - Roxy Music
- Heart - Dreamboat Annie
- Dire Straits - Dire Straits
- Kate Bush - The Kick Inside
- Blondie - Blondie
- UK - UK
- Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant
- Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus
- Pretenders - Pretenders
- Steely Dan - Can’t Buy A Thrill
Ok, that’s 11 albums. What can you do…
Great picks. I would also consider...
Van Halen--Van Halen
The Cars--The Cars
Pearl Jam--Ten
The Smiths--The Smiths
Boston--Boston
Black Sabbath--Black Sabbath
Led Zeppelin--Led Zeppelin I
A nicely argued list.
Don’t know where it would land, but Boston’s debut album is a definite for me.
Roxy Music 1st must be on the list in my view. By any standards.
Love Are You Experienced? My favorite song interesting enough is Love or Confusion!
Straight up 👋🏾, it's so seldom played much less mentioned with Manic Depression coming in at a cunts hair second... 🍷🗽✊🏾🇺🇲
A bit out of the era of your picks, but the next class of amazing debuts has to include Boston and The Cars eponymous releases and Pretty Hate Machine by Nine Inch Nails.
great list...patti..leonard..velvet underground...crimson...all ten great albums...cheers...peace...rocky
Just to stay consistent (though I think his first three albums are fantastic) you should have put John Cale's "Vintage Violence" on here.
Sounds amazing, I've seen King Crimson several time over the generations and never seen them use a light show, so this must have been special.
You forgot Gentle Giant debut album, is simply awesome!!
Fine feature as always
Shout out to "Wishbone Ash" a brilliant debut record from what were four young lads
Pioneered the twin guitar concept before the Allman Brothers did it
A classic debut record
That "Marquee Moon" didn't make your list is a wonder. It is a debut album so utterly astonishing that it near completely overshadowed the remainder of Television's career.
Arcade Fire their first album Funeral is stunning and they never bettered it
Piper At The Gates, Zepp 1, and Music From Big Pink, oh & Fresh Cream ! ✌🏻🎸
Impossible to make a definitive list, but he did a good job. Love Joy Division at #6. 5 glaring omissions for me: The Clash, The Who Sing My Generation. Never Mind the Bollocks, My Aim is True, and Piper at the Gates of Dawn
.
The Cars???

Everyone has their own taste in Genres
I respectfully agree with your choices

Thanks Barry!
My "Top 4" are:
4.) "The Grateful Dead"
3.) "Led Zeppelin I"
2.) "The Doors"
1.) "Black Sabbath"
Great rankings and commentary! ❤
Cheers!
I’m surprised that Led Zeppelin 1 wasn’t there. That’s one of my favourites. I agree with the rest though.
Maybe because Zeppelin got better and better as time went on. Zep I isn't considered their absolute best.
@@HuddshouseofRockNMetal I disagree, I think their first album is their best and got progressively worse. Same with their concerts, I saw them four times, the first time they were second on the bill to B.B. King and they were great, by the last time in 1976 they were pretty bad and I left early.

Good call!
I must say though that "Trout mask replica" was not Captain Beefhart's debut album, that goes to "Safe as milk" which also would be in my top-20 list of "best debut albums"
@@aekangelo You're right. I realized after posting this reply that I was mistaken. Glad you caught it.
Brilliantly done - some picks in there of which I’m not familiar with or don’t know so will be checking those out. On the whole, cannot disagree with these mentions.
Joy Division was a superb choice. Probably the best and definitely my fave of the albums listed
My top 5 debuts, slightly more indie sounding perhaps, goes like this:
1 The Stone Roses
2 Joy Division
3 Oasis
4 Black Sabbath
5 Led Zeppelin
I owned that Crimson album, Epitaph one of my favourite tracks ever (that gloriously dark Mellotron), but was unaware it was a debut...hmm.
1) Are You Experienced?
2) The Aerosol Grey Machine
3) The Sky Of Mind
4) Gish
5) Out Of The Cellar
6) Fogarty's Cove
7) Voyage Of The Acolyte
8) Core
9) ...And Then I Wrote
10) Ten
What a pleasure to listen to the English language as it's MEANT to sound :) Great insights as usual !
I liked how Zappa introduced his list of influences with “Please don’t hold it against them.”
I have did an episode of 'beneath the covers' on that album for my patreon
The Outfield: Play Deep
The Cars
Stone Temple Pilots: Core
ASIA
Cyndi Lauper: She's so unusual
Boston
Gwen Stefani: Escape
Love Crimson. But that's a good list.
I was looking for someone to mention The Outfield. Love that album.
Chicago Transit Authority (1969), the first album by Chicago, anyone?
Great record
I can think of a few, ELP , Montrose, Police - Outlandos de amour ,Queen 1, Roxys 1st,
I forgot The Stranglers, Rattus Norvegicus what an album that was !
Mine is the first Foo Fighters album.
Glad Jimi Hendrix & Patti Smith are on this list, though many albums here I've not heard before. My top ten 1st studio albums are:
Jimi Hendrix: Are You Experienced
Big Country: The Crossing
Talking Heads: '77
Marillion: Script For A Jester's Tear
Melissa Etheridge: Melissa Etheridge
Heart: Dreamboat Annie
Yardbirds: For Your Love
Goldfrapp: Felt Mountain
Big Brother & The Holding Company: Big Brother & The Holding Company
