  • Before we get started I just want to acknowledge the passing of Shaun Martin as he was part of Snarky Puppy and I'm featuring a video of them here. Rest in peace brother. You were part of possibly one of the most influential and far reaching jazz fusion bands of our time and I would be remiss to not mention your presence in this video. Thank you for your contributions and the lives you touched and for allowing us to learn from the music you created and were a part of.
Moving on to the video! The goal here was to give casuals a little something more to latch onto when they come out and listen to music. I've talked to a lot of people and gotten feedback about what they really enjoy about jazz. Or rather what makes them like a band vs another. What makes some musicians miss the audience completely? I think it's really easy to miss the forest for the trees when you're up there. You're really focused on yourself and how you are playing but you're missing what's happening with the people around you. You need to be relaxed and unafraid if you're going to be really able to listen. And expanding beyond the stage, what is happening in the audience? As you continue to delve down this rabbit hole you quickly get a sense of what the problem is. Jazz is a language that requires study so it quickly becomes unavailable to anyone that hasn't studied the language. However, the sense I've gotten from talking with people, is that they universally enjoy watching people having fun and interacting on stage. That's a big one, the interaction. If you're so obsessed with missing notes and your own playing you're not going to have fun. And if you're not having fun why would the audience? So , this video is my attempt to show some of the cool things that happened on stage during my Dawg Gone Duggit solo when you have a bunch of people really listening to each other. Some of the little things people may have missed in real time. I ran this by some people and they were like, "Woah I didn't even know any of that was happening live." That's a big deal isn't it? I bet you next time that person listens differently. It can't be helped. I think there's a big community here in Ottawa. You get little glimpses of it at jazz fest but boy would it be cool to see people coming out more throughout the year. Hope you enjoy, bit of a longer one here.
** A little PSA here; depending on what you are listening on (phone) it may be difficult to hear the bass and Keys **
**As always if you could please drop me a sub it will greatly help me grow the community and help me continue to do what I'm doing :) **
