Coming from an actual 1.0 Focus (125hp) owner, I can tell you this engine does really good mpg numbers. The best I've gotten was around 72 mpg on an 86 mile trip (Mixed interstate, City and 2 lane paved Farm roads of Illinois) and only used 1.2 Gallons. I usually average on road trips about 45-50 mpg doing 1-2 mph over the speed limit on the highway.
I will say it's not fast but it does get out of its own way and I'm confident on passing people and the sound of the engine is much more rewarding than a 4 Cylinder.

@@truantray It doesn't work out that well in practice. I test drive one of these when I bought mine. There's no low end torque and all the power is at upper RPMs when boost builds.... But if you rev it to build the boost, your fuel economy goes in the dumper quickly and it becomes difficult to match it's rated economy. I settled on the naturally aspirated engine instead and I regularly matched EPA ratings without even trying and got 47 highway with plenty of hills the one time I tried hypermiling it.

This little 3 cylinder engine won engine of the year three times in a row by the way. In Europe you can even get the Mondeo (= Fusion) with this engine, which makes a ton of sense. Normally there would be a 1.4 or 1.6l 4 cylinder engine with similar power, but now 3 cylinder engines can do the same job more cheaply and economically.
There are even examples from the other end of the spectrum. The BMW i8 has a 1.5l turbo-charged 3 cylinder with 228 hp in addition to its electric motors. We'll see many more in the years to come. Expect cars of all shapes and sizes to come with smaller, more efficient engines.

Americans acting surprised you can put 4 people in a 125HP car with modern car ammenities (even if the powerband is limited, you have a shift knob for a reason). It's nothing like the "bliss" of 5 grown men and swimming bags canned in a Daewoo Matiz with a 800cc i3 making 50HP (talking about razor-thin powerbands), climbing the winding roads of Andros. With air-conditioning running.

The problem with an Auto-stop system is that there is an extra lead-acid battery that, like the regular battery, will fail every 2-5 years with similar costs. The results of the dead extra battery vary from car to car. Some have just an error light requires a scan tool and a diagnosis before it is known that the extra battery needs replacing rather than there is something else wrong with the car. Will be a bigger deal when the car is aged.

I bought one of these brand new for $13,000 (no trade in) off the lot with a protection package from a dealer. I NEVER would have paid the $19,000 sticker price for a Focus. I will say that it depends on how you drive it, I average around 38 mpg on my daily commute which is about 50% city, 50% rural highway without the auto start/stop turned on. Best mpg I have gotten is 47. Overall, decent car. You can get a new/used car that gets better mpg at the same/lesser price, but you can't get a quieter car that is fun to drive while still maintaining acceptable mpg at the same price. Also to everyone saying that "my 1990s X-car gets better mpg", you are probably right; I love my Honda Insight but I would probably die if I got in a wreck at highway speeds.

I have a 2014 Focus ST, and I agree with you about it being not a very good car to learn stick on. My first car was an 83 Civic, and it was a great car to learn stick on, you could feel everything.

Best vehicle to learn to drive stick shift on is a 4x4 truck or jeep. Take beginner in a field put in 4 wheel drive - low range and they pretty much can't stall it out. And unlike a Corvette the danger of the vehicle getting out of control from too much horsepower and launching too fast makes for a safer easier way for a beginner to learn the clutch feel and shifting.
