  • @Cubo81
    @Cubo81 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm lucky, I lived that era to the full.. An era where electronics only served to turn on the headlights, where cars easily reached more than 800hp without assistance and were dirty, hard to drive, dangerous.. An era where safety it was just a suggestion and we were speeding at more than 200km per hour on narrow, dirt roads, with non-existent grip, in the middle of two rows of crowds in the center of the track... An era where the drivers, before getting into the car, calmly a shot of whiskey, a cigarette and a few passionate kisses to the girl on duty.. A time where death was seen as a traveling companion.. A time of great clashes between car manufacturers with blows of power, turbos and everything needed to make driving the car faster and faster.. The golden era of Group B was something magical, unreal, dangerous and wonderful.. And it will never come back... What a shame...

      20 valve 5 cylinder, 2.1 litre SOHC, a very unusual spec but as distinctive as they come, they said it developed around 600bhp by 1986, not far off 300bhp per litre, F1 only achieved more than that by fitting truck turbos to engines that would fry itself to bits in a fraction of the time the rally cars engines would.

    I don't think there was anything wrong with Group B, the problem was the spectators. Trying to fix that by slowing the cars down is like doing no-parachute sky diving from 8,000ft instead of 10,000ft. It doesn't really matter if it's Group B or the Indy 500 it a traffic jam on the 405 - don't stand in the road.

    • @rp3351
      @rp3351 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, the risk of killing the spectators could've been easily mitigated by moving the spectators, but the late Group B cars had a not so slight tendency to kill the racers as well, and were truly exhausting to drive.
      Progress in engines performance hadn't been matched yet by advancements in suspensions, tires and brakes, and safety measures were still in their infancy.
      Just two months after the deaths in the crowd at the Portugal rally, Henri Toivonen and co-driver Sergio Cresto perished in the Tour de Corse rally, exactly one year after another Lancia driver, Attilio Bettega, had died there.

    • @lesnuitssanskimwilde7986
      @lesnuitssanskimwilde7986 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I hated the spectators behavior at those events, so stupid. But let's admit it the category was doomed. The fact that engines was turbocharged was the main factor. For example the peugeot 205 started with a little more than 300 hp and ended up with about 500 hp in 1986 which was insane for such light weight cars and the roads used.
      What they could have done is forbidding super/turbo charged engines and/or RWD, think lancia stratos, metro 6R4 (with a smaller engine).
      Instead we had those lardy, super efficient, bad sounding turbocharged 4 cylinders cars.

      hmmm 🤔. when you put yourself in harms way, harm might just collect. maybe we are coming to the realization that no one should or has to die in motorsports, specially spectators. the spectators who died while watching group-b rally inches from the course could have watched from somehow else other than the outer portion of a fast corner. I don't think drivers want to be responsible for the deaths of spectators or their navigator. Governing racing bodies don't want to be responsible for the deaths of spectators either (regardless of legal waivers). Safer motorsports are best for all. so, in the end, we aren't raising wimps, just smarter, wiser ppl. There are still plenty of ppl who would stand in front of moving cars...just look at the pedestrians with their nose in their phone while crossing the street not paying attention to the cars driving by because what's on their phone is more important than their life....

    While group b was awesome, I am frankly tired of the myth around it. By the end of group a, cars were as fast, if not faster, than group b cars while costing about 10 times less to develop. Not to mention today's rally cars which are absoute monsters and easily make around 600 bhp, more than the group b cars. Nostalgia is good, but in short doses.

      They don't make 600 bhp full time, plus one wonders what's the fuss with the rally1 hybrids when Ogier was doing fastest splits without the electric motors. Not to mention Group B cars weighted nothing and had an absurdly monstruos deploying of that power.
      Who cares about being fast. Group A cars looked boring in comparison, Alen said he could drive the Integrale with one hand after the S4. Group B cars were pure drama. I prefer them even upon modern WRC cars, as these offer GREAT spectacle (jump way higher and corner way faster), but don't have nowhere near the charisma of the Quattro or the 037.

      Mate it's like F1, today F1 are faster, safer and easier to control than the ones of the past.
      But that's what make those old machines a myth, they were crazy fast even for today standard, without electronic controls or assist, without an automatic gearbox, without that million of sensors that will say the condition of every inch of the car, without even abs or power steering, racing on tracks that had less than half of today safety standard.
      The man and women who drove those analogic speed demon machines were crazy and insane, and every race they were one inch from death. They were like modern time gladiators.
      The myth it's not about the machines, but with the whole time, more crude, harder and harsher where being a pilot was nearly a death sentence. Yet those drivers went into this hell for the stake of their passion of going fast.
      Even the spectator risked their whole life for just being near those pilots and machines. The whole nostalgia it's about those times that had no safe filters or limitations, everything was left up to people to decide. Meanwhile today rules are insane, like having limited set of tires or gas emission requirement on damn racecars.
      Just an example is smoking cigarettes in the car or in the box, it may sound stupid but today even that thing it's not permitted anymore.
      It was a time where people, pilot and car engineers had no boundaries with the freedom of doing everything for full expressing their potential, even if that made your life at risk.
      The only close thing today it's the motorbike race in the isle of man

      500hp or more on gravel with an H shifter, almost stock suspension, immense torque and pathetic downforce handled by not so healthy drivers being extremely tested on stages with guard rails made of humans. Yeah, myth. You probably also think that footage of Senna driving a V10 Mclaren in Monaco with only one hand while changing gears with the other, acting like it's an everyday Corolla, is kind of overrated.

    This is fantastic! Reminds me of the old WRC x SEGA RALLY videos, but even better.

    actually, most rally car drivers do what alot of atv riders call "power shifting" meaning, not touching the clutch. also many transmissions had semi automatic conversions, and up down shifting like a dirt bike or atv. im not saying all, and not saying everyone, but most do power shifting. figured id throw this in here. im sure not ALL engines are happy with "power shifting" its usually, getting into high RPM and then just jamming it to next gear without touching the clutch as to not waste time. . .. use to do it on my 2-strokes constantly without fail. itll groove up your clutch sure. but is there any other actual way ? chime in, if someone ever road or drove something race worthy.
