- Rick from Zoom UK dropped by to give us the lowdown on the new Zoom G3Xn Pedal, which Steve couldnt help getting involved with.
Have a listen as he tries out the more portable offspring of their flagship G5n, which works in a modular fashion so you can create, save and recall your own custom patches quickly and easily.
The included ZOOM Guitar Lab software enables you to manage your patches and download new effects and amp/cabinet emulators. It includes both a Patch Manager for effects chains and an Effects Manager, with a simple graphic user interface that provides point-and-click control over re-naming or re-ordering your custom patches.

I let a Line 6 Firehawk go and then missed having a multi effects unit so I bought one of these. Less money and sounds really good...smaller footprint and I always end up just using a few tones. The Fender amps which I like are very useable. Thanks for this. Zoom effects are very underrated.
Andrew Butcher I did the same thing but bought a G3. Still a great pedal but I miss the layout of the Firehawk. I am however inspired to play once again.
I use the Recti and the Marshall JCM800 both with a TS pedal and using the RCT cab. Absolutely amazing tones specially for older punk rock and modern pop punk

How to activate wah? We need to stomp on of the three footswitch or there is switch under the expression pedal? (Like we activeate normal wah)

I use the Bogner Xtasy model for pretty much all my sounds and it's soooo good, so juicy. That model alone is worth the price...

I don't agree when people claim budget effects aren't comparable to higher end fx. If these.sounds were on a record no one, besides a sound engineer, could discern the difference.

Totally agree. I’ve played them all and it’s more about the player than the gear. A great player will make anything sound great and useable. Probably debatable if a sound engineer could tell the diff too.
I wish zoom updated the g5 with similar download-new-models feature. it feels abandoned, though it still sounds good )
Why did they remove the Marshall 1959 amp?
Hi. Is this good for recording an album ? Is the sound pure and deep enough for a high quality result, recorded ? Thx.

To get a great sound for the preamps and cabinets would you need to connect to your effects loop return behind the amp or can you just connect via guitar input?
To amp's return. It sounds much better.
Does anyone know the patch that is used in the beginning song?
when connected into fx return what is the best way ? with cab sims on or off ? or just maybe cab sims is on with mic is off ?
ajie infamy recommend using cab sim/mic sim when not using your actual cab and mic. For example when recording directly into a daw or recorder from the Zoom.

Be awesome if it ran on batteries as well, shame ZOOM missed that out whereas the similar priced BOSS units have it but prefer the sounds and the fact you can edit the signal chain on this.
You can run it on a power bank. You just need a 9v USB to DC cable. Works a treat!
does this pedal can be use as a master volume??
Not sure what the patch is Enoch, but its definitely the Tom Scholz Boston guitar effect he created as an engineer. Tom Scholz created all his own effects and gear.

How can I give a new patch a name to find it back? Like 103 = turn into "Rock" or so?
the numbers dont change but when you hit the menu til you see the save function, scroll to save and select, then it asks which # to save to, then you can also name it (choose patch and then name). can somebody explain to me if patches for the G3n also work for G5n? Since both use Guitar Lab i thought there might be no issue.
the one issue you might run into is the amount of fx possible on one patch. Which the max for he g3n would be 5 or 7 if you're not planning on using an amp sim, or 9 to 11? fx (G5n users can you confirm is his is correct). Apart from that I don't think you should run into an issue
Can you remove presets you don't like to make it easier to select the ones you do like?
Yes. Just save over them. Alternately, you can save a preset into an open save slot (there are 75 presets, 75 open slots), and then have whatever you use most frequently in the lowest numbered slots. Hope this helps.

Is there a way to run this so the 3 function switches don't shift through patches, but turn on and off effects within a patch?

Can you tell me how the headphone setup works on this ? Can you just plug in headphone in the back and play? without using and interface or amp. Just the guitar and the g3xn.???? Help.
Metal Head Hippie You can, but you'll need to be using an amp model in whatever patch you're using to get it to sound good... and don't skimp on decent headphones.
Metal Head Hippie depending on the size headphone input you might need a 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch adaptor.... (guitar cable end size to ear bud end size...)

Works great... as long as you use one of the amp models within the unit it sounds awesome thru headphones... no external amp or interface needed...
What head phones would you recommend ? I'm looking at the Sennheiser 280- 380pro or the philips SHP9500. Or what do you use if any? Thanks for getting beck to me. Helps appreciated.

I want one, but i need to see a 'looper' demo. first. Do you have a video for the Looper. I want to use the pedal in a live performance scenario (open-mic's) so i'm hoping i don't have to 'double-tap' to stop the loop. I want to replace my RP-500, which only has a 20s loop memory :-( .
I have one of these and the looper is actually very useful... no double tap required... seperate buttons for "play/overdub" and "start/stop" the loop volume level is also independently adjustable relative to your main signal... you can even set the loop to FADE OUT instead of just stopping short if you want... only problem is you cant save loops (once you turn the thing off everything goes bye bye...) the 40 second loop time is nice though... but if you want to engage the "undo" feature (meaning you can undo the last layer you just added) it reduces the loop time down to 20 sec... I've used it live at acoustic gigs I play for certain songs and it gets a great crowd reaction... ("wait, how's he DOING that???) Lol the average non musician thinks its magic haha....

Hey guy, thanks for the tip. However, i bought the pedal and have been playing with the 'Looper' and the only 'stop' option i see is to 'double-tap'. Is there some hidden option somewhere you could tell me about to make it a 'single-tap'?
i think i found it, but it doesn't work if, for example, i want to record my 'loop' for use later in the song. Say for example i want to record a 'Verse' part in order to have ready to play later with the Solo. If i start recording the 'verse', then single-tap the 'stop', it kills/cancels/erases anything that was recorded. What i want it to do is to; 'Record' the loop, single-tap 'stop', but save it for when i need it later. I don't necessarily want it to playback immediately, and having to 'double-tap' the stop button doesn't lend well to a live performance.
It's a cool pedal, just not what i was looking for. Concerning Loops, it also doesn't save the loop if you want to switch to another 'patch' (i.e. Record a clean rhythm, then switch to a 'solo' patch). It does let you turn fx on/off but only within the patch you recorded the loop in.

Can't get mine to link up to my pc to download the latest patch. USB connection doesn't work.

The g3xn usb port is just used to download and save patches. The g5n usb port can be used as an interface

should I get this pedalboard? I play in a small venue (can be filled with my 20w mustang 1) and I need more flexibility on my sound whilst playing live and still being able to get really specific sounds at studio. I read this have a software and USB connection, so. should I save money to get it?

Just purchase my G3XN today and was expecting that this is the latest model of the multi-effects pedal from my previous G3X. Now when I reach home I connect the USB to the laptop just like how I did it for my G3X to start recording through the MEP to the laptop apparently its not how it works. My question is. Is this G3XN can directly record to the laptop or not?

When is a developer going to concentrate on the effects and bin the amp modellers/simulators? Some amazing sounds in this but the modelling side holds me back from trying it. Many players alreadyhave a good amp...

G3n is the latest model. It has more sound, option to download effects and amps etc.
+Jack Baroso The G3n is the new model, so obviously they've improved the quality of the effects. What has been lost is the FX loop and the XLR output. Also, they've most probably done away with USB recording.

+Jason James Depends on a lot of factors. The following questions may help you:
1. What is the budget?
2. How many effects do you want in the signal chain? (G3Xn- 6, G5n- 9)
3. Will you be using it in your pedalboard, or as a standalone unit?
4. Is size a constraint?
I have a boss me 80 and it costs a bit more but this thing still sounds good and can get u thru most gigs , wat else do u need unless u just want high end gear so ppl can drool over your stuff i guess!..

At 10:17 processor got hanged .. automatically normal compressor appeared in the first slot... Zoom has this problem.. if not zoom shall ruled the market for tones...

Though it is one of the most budget friendly guitar multi effect processor.Dont buy g3xn" guys instead go for g3n".After using g3xn for a year the inbuilt expression pedal has started having problems. Using the "wah " effect and the" pitch shifter" has become a nightmare. Have tried calibrating the pedal and also resetting the unit but still these effects sound like a "slicer effect with fluctuating repetition of the wah" even though the pedal is only pressed once. Have also contacted the support team hope they respond to my mail. I have been using the unit only indoors for personal use and the chances of getting the unit pedal dirty is out of the question. Will be posting a video concerning the problem on my channel..starting to regret choosing "g3xn over "boss me25
