My staff at my shool was terrible!! She could've let the students know there was a family issue and she would not be available and would reschedule their appointments with other counselors or for when she was able to come back to work. It would have made them look bad if they shut of her mic or pulled her off stage. It would basically show that they are guilty and trying to cover up - not to mention the social taboo of "silencing a child", and the media fallout would have been a hundred times worse. The only thing they COULD do was stand there and wait for it to end and do damage control afterwards. Honestly, it was a brilliant move by the student because they would have brushed ot under the rug if she "aired her grievances" on a letter or in the privacy of their offices because they protect each other and their jobs so nothing would have been done. Epically if she had waited until after the graduation - they would say shes no longer a student and dismiss her. So doing it this way forces them to hear her and address the issues because now the media and everyone else knows and are watching their response.

Her speech is forcing the school to acknowledge and address the issues she faced. Sometimes that's the only way to change things for the better for future classes of that high school. I am surprised she was allowed to finish her speech.
When I was in high school the administrators had to approve the speech before it was read. They had student submit their speeches 1 month in advance to analyze the document and see if the actual speech was appropriate (no religion, politics, etc)
But you could easily and quickly change speaches, that's what she probably did!
If they stopped her, it would more validate her position that's my opinion ✌

They couldn’t say what they really wanted.
“It’s a shame she said this in a public forum so that we had no chance to silence dissent and sweep these complaints under a rug.”
Finally, some smart gal can think outside of the box
@Barry Barry who?
Very courageous of her. I love the school's comment that ignores her talking about her positive influences at the school. Her speech is forcing the school to acknowledge and address the issues she faced. Sometimes that's the only way to change things for the better for future classes of that high school. I think most students in her position would've felt and wanted to say the same, it's just hard to be courageous like that and most students just bite their tongue and give a fluffy speech.
We need to raise our kids to be unafraid like her. A true inspiration.
I agree but this could've been prevented if she just talked with the district
†JΔE † true but they might not listen beside this gave a clear open message
@@snakebolt2459 yea but guess who's going to investigate... the district.
They have to listen because the district funds the school. In fact there is a yearly district check in schools to see everything is in order because a district wouldn't want to give free money to a school who doesn't do jack
But I agree 100% this gave a bigger message no doubt. If it was sent to the district it would've been anonymous and wouldn't give the message of standing up to your school staff

Well it was very self centered. It wasn't boring to her alma mater!
Well it is kinda self centered.. i mean "you didnt support me" you didn't help me". She took away all the good things that other teachers did. With that kind of an attitude no school is going to want her.

Rotten Apple with a username like yours. You should know that one bad apple spoils the bunch.
Regardless of "unfounded claims" of the intoxicated teacher (as I read in some articles), the teacher acted a certain way that made students uncomfortable or suspicious, and that's not okay either. I'm glad she got to say her piece and I hope she's thriving now. I would've had a lot to say if I had the guts to do that
Turns out the teacher was suffering from stroke? I feel bad for the teach now cuz stroke can indeed make you look intoxicated as part of the aftereffects. She could be lying but there is some evidence of it so it was probably a misunderstanding on the students part
"It's unfortunate that she's taking away from the positive."
For her there is no positive because you guys didn't do your jobs properly. It's unfortunate that the people you think would be there for her weren't.
the positive is that they're graduating....she probably brought up topics that other students had already tried to put out of their minds because high school was about to be behind them instead they had to have those topics in their head during graduation
Teachers like that are why so many young men and women lose their ways, how can our future be bright when their present is filled with dimwits that only care for a paycheck and themselves...
@@jansonshrock2859 Good. I would never want to graduate if it meant perpetuating the toxic environment and just pass the buck for future generations to suffer. I would remember back at this proudly, because we would've overcome the atrocities the school allowed. There are real problems in school districts with teachers and staff having addiction problems. This is one step in helping the system but there shouldn't be a bunch of finger pointing after this. Teachers and staff are generally decent people that have stressful lives. For God's sake they have to deal with kids being failed by the system which is seemingly neat impossible to change. Rob yeah, unfortunate that it took that to get the school to pay attention. What was great was that she explained exactly what she learned as a result of the school’s failure.

Karen Flores you could say that but something that happens way too often in high schools that no one really talks about is how teachers know the power they have and how they will sometimes abuse it. My college counselor has purposely submitted college apps of students she disliked late.
