Everything has a cost. All results have sacrifices. You can't expect to make money from tourism, but don't want to be impacted by the presence of tourists.
Laos was bombed into oblivion be the U.S., and the surviving population was used to see tshirts for a penny a day. So when you say “everything has a cost”, the country didn’t have many options-they were limited by U.S. hegemony, among other factors.
Don't think the locals are complaining as tourism brings in the much needed money and jobs. Only ones complaining are the western media, who does not like to see Laos progress and wants Luang Prabang to forever be a backpacker's haven.
Every age has its charm. I was in Luang Prabang in 1997 and again in 2013, and I'd be happy to go back and visit again. Some things will be worse than before, some will be better than before, and some will be the same. That's called development.
with you’re logic you’d justify anything and everything, as long as it was called “development”. As if the only way to develop one’s country is to debase and commodify your culture and the inhabitants. It may not be obvious at first, but when you think about it, it’s dehumanizing.
@@xx133 Look, this is only (or mostly) in Luang Prabang. There are so many other parts of Laos that will never be much affected by tourism. It's really no different from Venice in Italy, another city that is highly dependent on tourism. Both Venice and Luang Prabang will survive just fine.

Laos has been one of the poorest countries in South east Asia if not Asia. I'm sure it's nice for some tourists to get their 'peace and quiet' for a few cheap bucks and then leave to go back to their nice developed countries and nice paying jobs. While the Laotions remain living out their lives making a couple of dollars a day. How else can they better themselves if not through more investment and well, more tourists.
Lao people don't complain. Lao people happy and welcome all of China to come enjoy beautiful nature and activities in LAOS. The More Chinese tourists visit the more Lao people gets to eat and live better.
Not everyone works in tourism, even Laos people appreciate `peace and quiet`. You can still have quality tourism w/o the need of loud karaoke boats... But that's the problem of local authorities & politic, so up to them.
there'd be some risks (throw in debt issues/debt traps, and political leverage from China), but no one may complain, especially given how much they're disillusioned with the opposite side, that is the West, who's known forever since recent years.. for war. A defensive war of attrition and political infighting perhaps. But so long if it actually benefits Laos and other nations without possibly harming them in the process., perhaps that sentiment may change and perhaps, I do want to see them thrive, assuming if it goes well and the West may someday change that sentiment as well (which given how other people see it, they wont)

Unfortunately, this peaceful town being overwhelmed by huge numbers of tourists, often with little respect for local people and their customs, is not getting the balance right.
I went to LPB 6 years ago, and again 2 weeks ago. It felt totally different. The local people didn't seem as happy as before, there were heaps tourists everywhere, many of them Chinese indeed and many businesses had Chinese signs around their shops and hotels. Either to cater to Chinese tourists (understandable) or owned by Chinese. Never have i been to a place where to many hotels were sold out. If you'd look on agoda durign the weekend. You'd only find 10-20 hotels that weren't fully booked and they were all between 100-600 euro a night. I've literally never seen anything like that before and i feel sad to say to i will most likely not be returning to LPB.
'SLAMS'??? Why use such a misleading negative word when the locals appear happy about the increased income from tourism?? Is it because this is propelled by Chinese investments??
You expect the city to get hand outs from tax payers or you want them to have an economy to get out of poverty?? You want to keep it prestine, then forever subsidize the city with tax payer money then.
The title leaves out that 99% of the tourists are Chinese. China did the same thing to Venice Italy. Sent huge cruise ships of people there week after week and destroyed the city. Plenty of documentaries on that as well.
Italians don't mind thousands of Chinese workers in sweatshops in Florence to make their designer bags, but when it comes to tourism they want Germans instead. Of course, Italians always had a flexible moral compass. That's how they ended up on the winning side in both world wars.
