Kamasi Washington reminds me so much of my 2nd cousin, who is a jazz saxophonist by the name of Pharaoh Sanders. They have a similar sound. I bet Pharaoh Sanders had an influence on Kamasi. Their music sound so similar.
Finally a new breed of young musicians being allowed to push the creative envolpe of Jazz forward without corporate radio interference and commercial formula air play expectations.
This song best describes life and all the multifaceted aspects of it. The good and bad, the morose pitfalls to the triumphant victories. The peaks and valleys, its a never-ending dance, a musical explosion. It replicates the Big Bang Theory but this universe was made my Kamasi Washington.

Everytime I hear the part from 7:36-7:48, I imagine an angry man thrashing around his apartment, slamming his fists against the wall until his hands are bleeding, after finishing an entire bottle of Jim Beam, full of depression and anger, mad against the world, screaming at the top of his lungs. That part in the song always makes the hair on my neck crawl
First time listening to this guy. Definetly sets the tone for the album, and sounds godlike at times. No wonder it's called the EPIC. Looks like i may be in for a treat!
2015 has been a standout year for music and here is the most ambitious of them all: #KamasiWashington's #TheEpic encompasses the entire history of jazz (as well as covering Debussy's Clair de Lune) and is vast in its scope and length (almost 3 hours)--it is a landmark album the likes of which we have not seen since the heyday of John Coltrane and Miles Davis in the late '60s. The Epic captures the spirit of our times. 10-person band (Kamasi the bandleader on saxophone, two bassists, two drummers, two keyboardists, trumpeter, trombonist, and pianist), a 32-person orchestra, and a 20-person choir.
Heard this song...while coming from Virginia Beach about 3 weeks ago..just got the end of it. Wow!!! Very different and love how the solos improvised, beyond the regular scope of a solo! Incredible and with the back round singing....wow.
Recently got into Mr Washington and managed to snag a couple tickets to go see him in the Olympia in March. Can't wait for this. You going to see him again 67 mark?
Absolutely beautiful. Not sure what took me so long to get around to this record, but now I must have it! That sung harmony in the background has me digging out my "What's Goin' On" LP....
This is so beautiful! Takes me back to Pharoah and forward to the synthesis of all that is right and holy at the same time. Thank you Kamasi and Brainfeedmedia.
Blew me away COMPLETELY!!!! What a gift to this world. Thank you for posting Brainfeeder!! And thanks to Gilles P for the radio paly also. Changng of guard is right
Man. Like the title suggests on this album. Absolutely. I was trippin hard on 4 drops when I first heard this. Life changing haha. Keep coming back to it. The cat. Kamasi . Fuck man, so epic. I love the vocals in this. And that sound kamasi does that makes it sound like he’s really strangling that sax. What a phenomenon. Peace and love big K and all you peeps reading this, from tha land down unda!
Although practice and research goes into playing, it's Kanasi's product. To put him into a comparison and genre is not the only truth. It's good, that's all that matters. Listen with an open heart....
This song haunts me like I imagine a recovering heroin addict feels 10 years sober...the trauma of its beauty leaves this song on my brain for Weeks after I listen to it. +kewlkey Fender I disagree with you wholeheartedly. Great musicians often are great as children/teens as well. I know musicians personally, that as youth were technically proficient enough to not only play music like this, but create it and score it for bands/ensembles as well.
I should explain myself more. I am a teen who plays alto and tenor saxophone a jazz-band. You are right that there are many children and teens who are technically proficient enough to play music like this, however in my experience the majority of teens lack the ability to play a piece like this as an ensemble. Again I could be wrong as I am going purely off of anecdotal evidence.
Right..the progression of the strings doesnt work but does...a beautiful tension building clash with smooth angellic voices layered over the top..bass man runnin a muck..this album is off the wall
When I first heard aboout this album I was in doubt this could keep my attention for very long because of its rediculous length. I was wrong, I even the have the feeling the record could be twice as long and I would still not get tired of it.
+Luna Rivera +William Snow Shame that there aren't better ways for music like this to come to light but they say that diamonds have to be dug out of obscurity

I have yet to explore Charles Mingus! That's why music will never get old...ever!
+Vernell Thomas all of the Mingus essential band is good personally my favourite is moanin and good bye pork pie hat
+Alex Collett Sinfield Of the 12 or so Mingus albums I have, gotta say Ah Um is my favorite. But this Kamasi Washington is KICKIN'

7:36 Ngl this made me tear up. Incredible playing, you can feel so much emotion put into these notes
Never heard strings fit so well into a jazz piece; amazing. Love the piano solo!
Ayin Villagra There is an old version of Black Coffee that starts with a haunting cello... I'll see if I can find it for you.
Thanks's! I'd appreciate that.
+Chorifly Also listen Bill Evans with Symphony Orchestra .. it's brilliant
I think you might also love the album 'Brubeck Plays Bernstein Plays Brubeck' from 1960, it's pure awesomeness!
Seriously? Thumbs down? WhoTF would do that? THIS. IS. PHENOMENAL.
This artist must be heard! Coltrane, Parker, Dolphy, Webster, Garett and now comes Kamasi Washington!!! Bravo.
I think this is one of the recent examples of music that can bring enjoyment of jazz to more people.
He is A VERY strong musician. There's *POWER* in this 💪🏿✊🏿👌🏿💯❤️
Where do you go from here Mr Washington!?!?! Hope you've not peaked too early?!!
Wonderful compositions, wonderful band, just wonderful!!!!

8:33 is the coltrane money note right there
Was thinking the same. A lot of people are throwing around the Pharaoh Williams influence, but i've always heard a lot of Coltrane in his tone/style.
