I love that and how you actually like them. It speaks volumes! Bc I used to think I couldn’t paint or that I hated painting but when I found the right brand/type I realized it wasn’t necessarily me it was the paint. And I think that’s soo important. Soo many ppl say they can’t draw or create art but I think everyone can they just haven’t found what works for them.

Hey! I use those heavy body paints actually and they work best with a gel medium. (The set those come in usually comes with a transparent mixing white). I’ve found that water and gel medium and paint all together turns the muddy and gloopy paint into something more manageable. And yes, these are heavy body so I find they are best for when you want the texture of the paint or brush strokes to be visible.

I’m glad even though you find acrylics strange to use, you still gave them another chance for Himi and discovered they’re not as muddy and itchy as you’d think they’ll be! As always, it doesn’t matter what art medium you use or how cheap or pricy it may be- you manage to create masterpieces EVERY SINGLE time!! I mean of course you do this since years, but I for example first need time to get to know a new art medium and how it works best before exploring what I’d like to draw and try out with it ;D

I usually only draw sketches since I always thought that my drawing looks better in that stage rather than when I started to colour it (I love the fact that you can do shadings, texture, blending and all of that with just a pencil), but there will be a time when I wanted to do some paintings and I usually use acrylics for it. And opposite of you, I struggle with watercolor since sometimes I thought it looked too thin and for me it didn't blend too well, perhaps it because the type of paper I'm using and also the brand of watercolor I'm using. Seeing you have fun with something you used to struggle with and the fact that you're brave enough to try it out again in the first place is really inspiring to me as an artist, perhaps I'll give watercolours a second shot :)

You're supposed to dilute acrylics with acrylic medium, that's why it feels like mud. It's a petroleum based product and not water soluble, so trying to dilute it with water actually breaks the paint bonds and makes it blotchy, patchy and muddy. When you use acrylic medium to dilute it (like you would use water for gouche), the main types you can use are Matte or Glossy depending on the finish you want. Go to any art supply store and they can show you the different mediums and explain how to use them. 🙂
I hope you try acrylics again using a medium, I think it would enjoy it more! I did my BFA in large-scale painting (focusing on acrylic) and large-scale drawing (focusing on Charcoal and pastel) and came to love acrylics for it's versatile uses through using different types and quantities of mediums! 😃

The big thing for working with acrylics for me is getting your hands on a few different mediums or additives. When using high end acrylic paint I would suggest looking for water mixable or looking at different add ins, you can get different types of thinners, texturizers, and I think possibly things to make them thicker. Just like you would with oil, but with acrylic. Water and acrylic doesn't mesh as well because it'll just dilute it or make it a mess, but you can get acrylic thinners.

Very textured wood makes the painting so much more special because it would never be the same on ANY other piece of wood. I like acrylics and have a wide variety of brands, including super cheap and some pricier kinds and the textures are all wildly different. From runny enough to drop out of the tube, to thick like frosting. Mediums can help with the texture a little and mixing with a palette knife instead of brushes if it's too thick and goopy. Usually, the better quality and the more opaque, the thicker the paint is.
