    There’s always something that comes along that makes you realize Coltrane is even better than what you already thought

    This is some amazing shit! We should all be deeply grateful that things like exist -- there will NEVER be another Coltrane and any example of his work is priceless. And it's definitely Philly Joe Jones. Trane wasn't working with Elvin during this time -- Philly JJ was his go to drummer.

    Great clip, glad I stumbled on it. Trane is one of the a very few artist that you can tell in one note like Miles. I feel an Elvin like presence in this clip... here is what I think. Trane had reel to reel recorders he practiced with. They were sitting in a hotel room on the road somewhere and just got high. They were having a drink and Trane hit the record and picked up his horn. Listen to how laid back the groove is. Cats was wasted hahahaha...

    Many drummers used to play in telephone books with brushes and this is very clearly a pair of brushes here, playing in a telephone book. You can hear typical snare drum rudiments / phrases AND the ghost notes in between, something that could be reproduced much better by a pair of brushes. Elvin Jones learned by playing in telephone books with his brother, as well as many, many other ones.

    @musikaudios You are soo right, people are clueless these days to anything that's not packaged & sold in stores. Practically anything that's not fragile can be a percussive instrument! These guys played horns that were held together with rubberbands and they STILL sound like gold.

    Yes, that´s it, a phone book, it is very clear that he is playing on a phone book. Many jazz drummers used to practice on these types of surfaces, specially when they were in a small room and there were no drum-sets.

    @Flextones Yes it is the theme '' Four '' AND they are trading fours too.
    The '' someone '' is not only keeping time behind him, but also is improvising too. Last thing, a '' percussion instrument '' sometimes could be something very simple, like a Telephone Book ( Elvin Jones´s brother for example used to teach him how to improvise and/or acompany other players only in Telephone Lists ).

    @musikaudios You TH-cam criticizers you pay too much attention on details to correct them instead of simply enjoy the deepness of music. Man, it is SO SIMPLE. I only tried to find a title that could fit with what is happening on this ' video ' - or ' audio ' file. Maybe as I am not american and not british my english is not perfect but anyone who cares more about music than to correct titles I bet they enjoyed it a lot ( and still enjoy ) with their not armed souls. Free your mind.

    i think that the more i listen to this recording the more one truth stands out.
    clearly someone recorded a duo between john and a tapper.
    the sensitivity that john displays is staggering, considering the advancements we tend to associate with him i.e. 'sheets of sound'.
    i think this is one of the most astounding displays of empathy and humanity that i have ever witnessed.
    - that in itself convinces me that it's J to the C
    (also listen to him say 'we're trading fours now' at 1:28)
    :)

    It’s sad how many people who think they are familiar with Trane can’t recognize his “musical face” here. Recognizing a musician like Coltrane is a lot like recognizing a human face. No matter what the angle, time of day or age, you know it’s them in an instant. And so it is here. An this is especially evident in subtle nuances that have to this day defied perfect imitation. So cool to hear him like this!

    This is in the same bag as he playing in '56, similar to the way he played on Relaxin'...
    People are just used to his studio sound, which is much more present when there's a designated mic for his horn! Like think how he sounds for a few notes in the very beginning of his solo on (I believe) "If I were a Bell" it's sounds a little distant & dark at first like he was running to the mic! Same sound....

  • @musikaudios
    @musikaudios  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @khaosx12 Of course that is a type of practice. You can call it rehearsal or a jam inside home or anything similar, but that is a practice. It is another musician with him, playing in a surface, like many drummers from the past used to do. About the ' damn picture and the title ' , is it so important comparing to the rarity that this archive is ? Sound is more important. And what you mean by ' impersonate yourself with the pioneers ? '

  • @musikaudios
    @musikaudios  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are the one who need to listen to Coltrane PRE Miles quintet era, even PRE ' Trane & Monk ' duets ( although it was a quartet, it was a duet ) . Go to listen to Coltrane in Blue Note sessions with other leaders. You can´t suggest as you did to someone to listen to ' ANY ' Coltrane album or live performance because his style changed a lot over the years.

    It's absolutely Trane. It'd be a lot easier to imitate his later playing but to be able to pull off an imitation of how he played during his Prestige years, with that time-feel? No way man - this is Trane, nobody has that feel.

    This sounds, to me, very similar to a track of one of the four albums Coltrane recorded with the Miles Davis Quintet around 1956-1957 (Cooking, Steamin', Working, Relaxing).
    Not sure which though, but it definitely sounds like it is off one of those albums.

    • @ricardodossantos749
      @ricardodossantos749 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Peter! Trading four bars seems to me pretty good too. What is more meaningful is to confirm that there are still many people with musical sensibility despite the fact that the environment does not look favorable for musicians such as drummers Elvin Jones and, in fact, Edison Machado, his fellow musician from Brazil . To be honest, I do not really appreciate the taste of many drummers nowadays, in spite of their great exploits. Miss that contagious rhythm with such elegance and energy, full of spaces. Therein must be missing the tap dancing, as suggested by SahvannahAmaka.

The only thing I know is that you first came to this video to correct what I wrote as a title. So I need to tell everyone who corrects the title that they ARE trading fours. And they are doing that as some sort of practice. It is not a live gig and it´s not a studio sessions, recording session. Again : you call it a rehearsal, a practicing or anything similar to that.
