Doing sterling work Peter, don’t let it defeat you.
On your differences between groups in our small community, I think the difference is :
    (a) model assembler those who will build a kit (mainly Tamiya) that doesn’t require fetling and then get the enjoyment from painting to perfect detail.
    (B) model builder who will construct, correct, scratch enjoying the process of creating an as perfect replica, but paint is paint get it looking ok and move to the next.
What we could almost do with is an alliance where the builders build and the assemblers paint.

I feel with you, Peter, having just battled, swore and sweated my way through the Kitty Hawk 1/48 Dauphin II, a ridiculously over-engineered kit with plenty of fit issues. But, Hallelujah! I'm now well on my way with the Airfix 1/48 Hunter f.6. What a beauty of a kit! Great tooling, and the fit is amazing. I now can't wait to get to my bench. Your proposed options all sound good. If you really want a mojo-builder after your current Kinetic experiences, then the 1/48 Tamiya F-35A would do the trick!
This really is so well engineered that the parts just fall together.... There is a lot of intricate, fiddly painting to do in the weapons bay and undercarriage bays, and depending on the version you go for, there could be a lot of fiddly decal/transfer application (I got a RAF Lakenheath decal set from Hannants to use, so most of that fiddly RAM tape isn't needed!).
However, the quality of engineering and fit of the parts is second-to-none; it's not quite that "shake 'n bake" meme, but, you won't need any filler.... 😉
I'm progressing nicely with it, after giving up in disgust at the relatively 'new' Italeri 1/48 F-15E (which comes supplied with Lakenheath markings, which is what attracted me to the kit in the first place)....
The kit is a pig! 😡
Hardly any two parts fit properly! There are few location points, and where there are, they don't align, and the upper fuselage half is shorter than the lower!! The angles cut into parts where they butt together aren't matching, so they don't align - and if you sand them to match-up, then the pieces just don't line up at all!!
Even the ejector seats are a pain to align/fit, and the instructions are 'vague' on almost ever point of contact of any part of the kit!
Forty-odd quid wasted on a kit that looks like it was made by half a different [not model] manufacturers with rather vague directions and dimensions, that are then stuffed into a box for resale......
Avoid this one if you ever feel see it and feel tempted! 😆

I worked on the real ones of these and I smile. Not many people can say they have heard a sidewinder growling with lock on during testing it’s well nervy! Well done with the gun pods you fitted the handles, normally the bombheads would misalign the rear fairing to the main gun pod body and kick the rear fairing at the back and make four new holes for the spigots, also the link splitter would fail and when the aircraft landed a load of unlinked links would flay around in the airstream and damage the fuselage.

Happy new year! Highly recognizable frustrations. As I ' build' the Kinetic 1/48 A-6A/E Intruder last year I dare to argue that is even worse. Ludicrous instructions, poor fits and consequent filling, sanding and improvising. It's cherry on the cake is a canopy made out of 4 clear non fitting parts. Complete horror story. The only good things that came from it were me learning to fill and sand even more and better. And after finishing it, I rewarded myself with Tamiya's pitch perfect fitting 1/48 F-4B (which also has some challenges but within tolerances).

Hi Peter. Sprue Goo made with styrene sheet is very soft, takes time to dry and doesn't set very hard. That's because of all the pigment in the styrene sheet to make it white. Contrary to popular belief, styrene sheet is not 'pure styrene' far from it. Try making some with clear sprue. (no pigments in the styrene so it is a 'pure' as you are going to get). Add a tiny drop of lacquer paint to it so you can see it when you're using it. It sets quicker and harder than when you use styrene sheet and is especially good to use in areas where you will need to replace lost detail. Panel lines etc.

I built Kinetic’s Mirage IIIO recently. The instructions cover sheet is oriented in portrait like yours, but all other pages in between were portrait....but printed in landscape! As a result, the top third of each page was missing. I bought the same kit again (wanted to build a French polished airframe) and the instructions were printed with the same fault! No real errors in the instructions themselves apart from Australian pylon choices, but I had to download them from Scalemates to be able to read them. For a AU$80 kit, that’s unacceptable. The Kinetic Mirage outer wings don’t fit too well to the bottom halves, but everything about their F-104 kit is wonderful.

I worked on the real things for a couple of years: Nothing interesting on the outside. I built the Meng version and it very nearly emulated taking temazepam. Put me to sleep. BORING subject matter regardless of ease of build. Grey. Flat. Bland. More grey. More flat facets. More blandness. The real thing’s incredible but...Build anything else.

Yes and no. The first thing you do after cutting the nose halves off the sprue? Offer them up to each other. They either join at the nose or behind the seats.. Not both. It’s only after you locate the nose-weight section in between that they join well.
I’m finding that with everything so far. If everything’s not in place, you’ll not get a good join. Some of it’s sublime, but I’m not advanced in the build enough to say one way or the other definitively. But I’m enjoying it nonetheless with it’s Big Ed set.

Some times a kit just wants to fight back. I've had a similar journey with the GWH MiG-29 for the 1/48 SIG. It's always frustrating when the kit has great levels of detail, but the engineering and parts fit just doesn't work very well, and eventually you find you're just going through the motions to get the thing finished without the enthusiasm for it.
I'm looking forward to getting back to a mojo building kit after that one's over the finish line (something without half a million decals, for starters). Kinetic were quite poor in their first few years. I was hugely disapointed with their Mirage III and 2000. (Someone needs to do a high standard tooling of the Mirage family) However have to say that since they have launched their gold range, Kinetic kits have being superb. The F 104 is an incredible kit .

Peter I think you have to build the tamiya mosquito, if you do not build it now when will you, as you say you really want to and it will certainly be a lovely kit, my view is build hte kits I want to and enjoy or they wil sit in the box and before I know it I wont be able to build them

I do know what you mean...it can feel competitve and one can be put off by that. But it was ever thus with some of the modelling magazines too...just ignore it and enjoy the fun of building kits: Maybe buy some older ones you did when much younger and enjoy them again? 👍🏻

After a gruelling build it’s good for the mojo to try something completely different. I suggest the Tamiya Sheridan which should be an enjoyable build 🤞

I really believe Kinetic’s philosophy is “take the money and run”. I’ve unfortunately built one kit thus far, their MQ-9 UAV Reaper. Fit and finish was amazing well in some areas but in others it’s as if you were building two kits the same subject but from different manufacturers. And the instructions were THE (for me) absolute worst. I had to constantly guess what parts and where they went half the time. Virtually none of the numbers matched the actual part. Kinetic has best get their act together. In the year 2023 no excuse for it other than a “we don’t care, we’ve got your money” attitude.

If you take something. that has already been engineered into the final shape and your primary job is to apply glue, then you are an assembler or model builder. Neither modeller will do anything significant to the model beyond some detailing or minor scratch building. If you start with a lump of wood, styrofoam, plastic sheet, brass etc and an idea in your head, like my dad use to, you are a model maker. Whatever you do, if you are having fun, it doesn't really matter which category you are in.

Kinetic Gold series are way better- the F-104s are good, Ive build several. The earlier kits, great subjects, but poor fit and instructions as you say.

Seriously?? I built the Kinetic Starfire (their first kit) and while it was not Tamigawa it was easy enough to produce an acceptable model. If you want a real challenge try the Special Hobby Albacore or their Mil Mi-1 Hare. Hard work but a much greater sense of achievement when your friends at the local IPMS club praise the result. And no I am not a champion builder, in fact I have only ever entered one show competition; I feel confident enough to display my builds on the club stand at shows and am happy with that. I don't make a song and dance about bad instructions or complain about a bit of fettling, filling and sanding, I just try to rise to the challenges, as best I can, as they present themselves. I take your point about first time builders but building Tamiya standard kits ALL the time would be boring and would not do anything to improve one's model building skills.

Yes. Seriously. Whilst I take on board your points, when you consider the £60-£70 asking price, this is not an acceptable level of quality.
