Hi Peter so there is a couple of things I do to manage space with displaying models, occasionally I dispose of model if its starting to fall apart or something like that but I don't do it often. but I rotate what is on display every 6 months or so, some go into plastic boxes in the attic and other come out of plastic boxes and go back on display. You can double you display space that way. It also has the advantage of triggering regular cleaning. Great video as always.
Luckily I've got a son who is a kitchen cabinet maker. He is currently buiding me a large display cabinet with big sliding glass doors that will prevent dust from getting into it. Dust is my biggest issue with models. You can almost guarantee that you will break an aerial or some other tiny part off every time you dust the models.
Very nice one Peter👍. I'm using the Mastertools (Trumpeter) Display cases nowadays. These seal dustfree and I stack them in a 'normal' cabinet. Love you display cabinets though.
Impressive collection Peter. i Have 3 cabinets ,corner unit (Glass) 5ft high 8 glass shelfs cost £200 and i added my own led lights and installed thin draught sealer around the door , zero dust, next cabinet £100 again 5ft high 1ft squared(Glass) 8 glass shelfs own led lights and draught sealer zero dust, last one mexican book case all wood 4ft by 3ft 25cm deep 4 shelfs added led lights , bought a large made to order acrylic sheet for the front which is screwed in bookcase cost 70 squid acrylic sheet 60. . No dust for me accept my 1/48 B29 and PBY a bit big for a cabinet :P and ive still run out of space , Ikea do some nice display cabinet for very reasonable prices, you have to be careful with lights halogens can melt your models.
@@leefennell Thanks Lee! But no, she disapproves strongly and warns I will be sleeping in the lost ark soon unless I get a shave: She thinks it adds 10 years on me!
Nice to see your lovely model collection, they do look great in those display cases. As nice as those cases look, I don’t think I would pay quite that much for something that isn't dust proof. Years ago I built a wooden case with sliding glass doors that is dust proof ( which I'm just about to add some glass shelves into ). I also use Trumpeter display cases and while my displays do not look as good as yours keeping dust off my models is more important to me as I hate having to dust them. When it comes to display stand, I perfectly understand why most kits dont come with them, since a lot of modellers would not use them its just a waste of money and plastic.
Not just pilots. Like bombers with gunners that are visible need figures for their spots as well, and I hate when I get a new vehicle in 1/35 like a truck and it doesn’t have a driver in the box. And then have to scour the internet to find that the only figure that will fit is always out of stock or has not been produced in 10 years. Some companies are worse than others but like the hobbyboss gmc cckw with 40mm aa gun shows a full crew on the box but don’t include any of them, that is the absolute worst
Nice video presentation Peter. Thank you for showing your model collection to everyone. Your aircraft model kits are constructed and finished to a very good standard, especially the Spitfires, Komet, Me109, Focke Wulf 190, TSR-2, Buccaneer and F-15 Strike Eagle. May I also commend you on the Ferrari and McLaren F1 race cars. The best part about the modelling hobby is the enjoyment of making the kits and the satisfaction from seeing the finished product. Displaying completed models is all part of this. There are various cabinets at different budgets on the market. I personally have purchased bookcases with glass doors and shelves from IKEA to present some of my models. I would recommend buying the best possible display cabinets that your budget allows without breaking the bank. Trumpeter manufacturer some very nice stand alone display cases for their 1/200 battleship range, however they are expensive but professionally show the models at their best. Keep up the good work Peter. In the future would it be possible to do a comparative presentation on the positives and negatives of different brands of paints/paint systems? I know a number of novice and experienced modellers who would benefit from this (Including myself).
I'm not super fussy with detail on my models and I feel I complete them to a resonable standard - I always use rattle cans or brushes for my builds, prodominantly luftwaffe aircraft, once completed they hang from my ceiling which is now half full of a range of aircraft from 1/72 to 1/18 scale. I do dust them occasionally but to be honest I find they don't tend to get rediculously dusty being up so high from the ground. I really enjoy being able to look up and see a massive dogfight between all different aircaft types from ww2 going on. This really is a fantastic hobby and one that can give you immense joy and a huge sense of acheivement! Keep the videos coming Peter 😀
I build across a number of disciplines, including wargaming figures. For the figures I've tended to magnetise a 4l or 9l rub boxes and stone painted and unpainted models in them, they're less good for display, but make good storage and transport cases. For model railways currently i have most in foam lined bigger rub boxes. I'm just getting back into aircraft and will need to think on how to display them. I expect rub for storage and rotating them in a smaller display cabinet if i figures out where to put one.
The only model I ever painted with a Tamiya rattle can was my Tamiya Jaguar Mk 2. This was pre-TH-cam so I didn't have the benefit of experts like yourself to show me the best way to do it. I ended up using 3 cans as I kept getting runs in the paint (entirey my own fault), but in the end it came out looking realy nice and still looks good. I have never had the desire to use them again. I can get a much better gloss finish with my SMS airbrush, especially using the SMS lacquer paints. I don't bother wet sanding them after painting as the finish is good enough without that. A few coats of SMS super lear high gloss finishes them off perfectly.
I liberated Liskeard leisure centres old trophy cabinet out of their skip (with their permission) whilst installing new gym machines around 10 years ago. Will be perfect for my 1/72 fighters
Thanks for the showing off the displays, Peter. Awsome builds that deserve to be on show! I'm in the process of fitting some clear doors to a Billy Bookcase™ however, the dust is winning. 😂🤦🏻♂️
Only way to win sadly is to pressurise the cabinets, which means sealing them and venting the air to create a pressure so the dust is trapped on filters where the air comes in. Effectively how a pc case is these days in some ways.

Important topic, Peter. I design and fabricate my aircraft in flight display stands out of mostly stainless steel that can pose the model in multiple positions and carry an electric power supply. With a dedicated room (3.2 meters x 5 meters) there are three even spaced floating shelves, the centre shelf at 1.26 meters high with 50cm spacing between the top and bottom shelves. End wall has a closet and cabinet opposite of the wall with a window. There are 34 built models on display mostly 1/32 and 1/24 with room for more than twenty in work and stash projects to be added that will have enough space without making the room look cluttered. Like the Apollo, I have a PIG Model 1:1 scale King Tiger L/71 (1.12 meter long) shell posed in a corner atop a 64cm tall stand. Six small dimmable ceiling lights that can aim and two 2.5 meter double row led enclosed lights give all the illumination needed. I retired from owning/operating a business requiring a showroom. The best display fixtures and cabinets are built for retail shops. In Canada, there are many companies that change their layouts or go out of business and the fixtures (like my glass shelves) and cabinets are available for a fraction of the cost at outlets like, 'Habitat for Humanity' or used furniture stores. Dusting my monoplane WW2 and jet aircraft models is not too much trouble, even the 1/35 Elco PT boat as they are closed up. For intricate models and figures I have the cabinets. Example is the two Merlin engines from the Airfix 1/24 MkIXc kits that were not needed for the in flight displays are in a cabinet. A video shows the custom stands made for the aircraft and the engines on my channel.
Absolutely agree about the stands. ESPECIALLY AIRFIX! They are price gouging on those things. Older viewers will no doubt remember the range of bagged kits that you used to get from Woolies for 2/6d or thereabouts. Even they, at the bottom end of the Airfix range came with these stands (and pilots). It's not as if Airfix have bothered to make new moulds since then, judging by the ones you show us in the video. The Concorde looks impressive up there climbing away. Far better than it would sitting on it's stick insect landing gear. Nuff said. *Cabinets.* For those on a budget, a similar sized cabinet as yours but half the width can be had from Argos for about £220 or even lower prices elsewhere. The difference is these are not illuminated (edit: seems they have one light), and are just furniture items, rather than "professional". *Dangerous chemicals!* what about *dihydrogen monoxide?* It kills thousands of people every year. Inhaling even a small amount can be fatal. Yet, we are it is in thousands of household products, even food.
Those stands were included in the original Airfix 21/- kits from Woolworths right from the start, I still remember using on on the first kit I brought, the Albatros D Va, with my pocket money in 1956, and they were always present with every subsequent kit up until the 1970 when I stopped buying kits. in the late 90's and e3arly 2000 I picked the hobby up again and was very surprise3d that the stands were no longer supplied, not that I usually used them but it was nice to have the option, now withy the new releases with optional undercarriage with no stand being supplied you're kind-of forced to build the model on its undercarriage. It's good to see that the two new beginners kits are now being supplied with a stand, hopefully this trend will continue and hopefully make its way to the normal range of models.
The one model i have a case for (Tiger 1 from Tamiya) had a case from a Toy show at the nec. They used to have a stall near the entrance and did made to measure ones.
I recently found a company online that does custom sized Acrylic display boxes that are stackable if the same size. They are fairly reasonable too, £45~ for a case large enough for an Airfix Nimrod. Snapped up five for my V-Bombers and the Nimrod. Rest of my models are in a lit bookcase with glass doors, yet incredibly I’m still at war with the dust zombies…..
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab Boxxco, they are designed for Lego but are great for models. Simply tell them the internal dimensions you need and they make it. The back can be Clear, Black or Mirror finish and the base is black plastic that can be painted, finished with terrain or have a diorama base on (these you have to provide) I intend getting some of those pre printed hardstanding sheets.
I rarely build aircraft models, and really no armor. (I mostly I build cars and scfi subjects) But I enjoy your your videos - always entertaining sir ! 👍
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab today I gave a bunch of built aircraft to the local jet museum to sell. I usually keep them for a while then move them on to make space. If I sold them privately I'd be lucky to get what I paid for the kit in the first place.
Hi Peter could you tell me where you get the magnifying lights from,I'd dearly like one especially as they remind me of the aliens from War of the worlds, thanks Martin
Hi Peter, very interesting once again, great to see your fabulous collection. I suppose kit manufacturers would put the stand issue down to “Costings”, unfortunately for me I usually place my aircraft on a stand, I accept it’s my choice, so I have to pay for that…begrudgingly. “Airfix” begins with the letter A, a good shape for a stand base, clear plastic or black, maybe time for a rethink lol. Now where do I put that last model I made?….
Agree completely that for aircraft models it is unconscionable we have to separately *BUY* both an in-flight stand, AND A PILOT in most cases! The few pennies both would add to the price cannot make that much difference surely?
I have some of my armour builds under old clear plastic plant propagators. Works well for them but sadly most of my aircraft builds are exposed to dust.

Here in NZ glass cabinets are quite expensive, ikea is only available by importers who triple the retail price. We do have an ikea store coming so hopefully they don't follow that trend and we can have affordable display cases.
I feel your pain. I've tried to get hold of good cabinets here in NZ and it's very difficult unless you want to spend many 1000's. My father has a few glass cases that he got from Crackerjack. They are quite cheap, and not too bad quality, but the gaps around the doors are too big for my liking. He has a lot of motorbike and car models displayed in them. They are not large, but for a few models they are quite good. My son is building me a very large cabinet with big sliding glass doors that will be almost dust-proof and also have LED lighting built in. I'm trying to convince him to start building them for other modellers.
If I were to do it again, I would take all the money I spent on my modelling and spend it on scuba diving equipment and scuba diving trips and camera gear for scuba diving. I blame my dad for becoming a modeller/hoarder....
Great video about your cabinets and displays, as for you comments on a nanny state and banning of rattle cans, it unfortunately has to be done, we are inundated with “products” that are in abundance where several individual manufacturers will market their version of essentially the same products. Although you will I’m sure disagree with this opinion as is your right, there is frankly a far bigger picture that needs to be considered regarding disposal and the harmful effects on the environment, I’m no tree hugger, but at one time model making was a small industry and it didn’t have such an environmental impact, there is tooling costs material shipment and processing and the bottom line where we demand ultimate quality so to bring costs down to meet our expectations we outsource to less regulated manufacturing and then complain that the quality isn’t as expected! There any no of aspects that need to be taken into consideration to give us things which we all take for granted and ”normal” and dare I say expect entitlement at whatever cost to the cause, I’m just as guilty as any one else who participates in this hobby I see a italeri 1/32 must have or a 1/12 Tamiya desirable and out comes the card and bingo my fix is satisfied till the next time. We live in a world of total excess and it’s now “normal”. Example from driving across the country to take our offspring to some event that they “must” attend be it comic con or dances or athletics etc etc, and it all costs ,the infrastructure to attend, the fuel the production of the vehicle, etc etc. Sorry but we simply don’t give a toss any more, you mentioned that you had an fault on one shelf that it was scratched, years ago you “I’m talking generally “ would have been happy to pick up a similar cabinet from a shop closure sale and be grateful for it but now? Now, it has to be this, and this cabinet has that etc etc. please don’t misunderstand me Peter but you’re just one individual who has a keen interest in a hobby but this is a business that’s huge in environmental issues. Along with all the other social activities, online shopping, sporting events that are globally popular etc etc. it’s the runaway train, so when some country considers banning a can of pressurised paint don’t knock it and attempt to discredit it as a nanny state policy, congratulate it for having the balls to actually try to make this world a little better, after all you will still have a mixing jar and acrylic or enamel thinner to mix with your paint as will I “ when I get a airbrush that is! “ Regards and keep producing thought provoking and entertaining videos the world would be a far worse place without the bog “O” giving his penny worth! 👍
Its bad enough that airfix says you must buy the stands separately, but these are the old stands. They dont fit any airfix kit produced in the last 15 years.
I just dont understand why they (airfix) dont release the style of POSEABLE stand that come with the dogfight doubles sets but as single model stands....it would cost them NOTHING as they DO have the tooling and DO include them with the df doubles
@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab fantastic to hear that Peter...i could understand if it was a new tooling that they would have to invest money into but as i said they ALREADY have the tooling in place so it wouldn't cost them a penny......airfix just dont care and haven't cared for quite some time
When I have built my model I throw them in the plastic recycling bin. When it's finished that's it I move on to the next one. It's all in the building and painting not the displaying for me.
Tamiya Canada ban Absolutely zero knowledge of why the ban has been introduced (if it even has been - only an internet assertion 'cos Darren down the pub told me) and already the "nanny state" whinge is let loose. I googled it to get some background and all I can see is whining on modelling sites; no news sources of any repute. Let's gather some facts first, folks, before we clutch our handbags to our bosoms.

Don’t know about 21/- but I seem to remember Series 1 at 1/3d, Series 2 at 2/6d. All these years later, I’m still hooked.👍🏻
@@richardstout6364 What's the name of the company, Richard?

Boxxco, they are designed for Lego but are great for models. Simply tell them the internal dimensions you need and they make it. The back can be Clear, Black or Mirror finish and the base is black plastic that can be painted, finished with terrain or have a diorama base on (these you have to provide) I intend getting some of those pre printed hardstanding sheets.
My 1970s vintage dogfight doubles by Airfix all came with "large" A stands so you could get both planes onto
@@MichaelCampin Yes and today they reissued the kits with an even better version: They should expand on that to other kits.
I rarely build aircraft models, and really no armor. (I mostly I build cars and scfi subjects) But I enjoy your your videos - always entertaining sir ! 👍
Cool, thanks! 😊
Such nice models & well displayed, but they take up so much space! Much better dumped in storage boxes hidden in the garage.
Hi like your cabinets but also what are those lamps you have on your model bench I really need one
@@digegr61 They are lightcraft LED lamps
Thats a good topic. Ive been thinking the very same thing thing.
It was you who got me thinking about this one! 👍🏻
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab today I gave a bunch of built aircraft to the local jet museum to sell. I usually keep them for a while then move them on to make space. If I sold them privately I'd be lucky to get what I paid for the kit in the first place.
Notification ON, Peter😂
The trick is every once and awhile my young son gets into the cabinet and starts playing woth a model, then it breaks, now I have more space
@@makoajohnson2341 That is a very radical solution, Lol! 😂
Do you use HEPA air purifiers in the rooms where you display your models? That could reduce dust considerably
No, what are they?
The modeller could make there own znd i agree stands should come with aircraft kits or sci fi
Hi Peter could you tell me where you get the magnifying lights from,I'd dearly like one especially as they remind me of the aliens from War of the worlds, thanks Martin
@@martinmountford3281 Thanks Martin, The lights are from Lightcraft.
@@leddyzee247 Yes but the 60 year old ones are just embarrasing now...
Agree completely that for aircraft models it is unconscionable we have to separately *BUY* both an in-flight stand, AND A PILOT in most cases!
The few pennies both would add to the price cannot make that much difference surely?
Lots of great information ta! Those cabinets are ring twitchingly expensive ✌️
Very! 🫣
Take lots of piccys then sell it, give it away or bin it. It's the journey that matters, not the destination. 😀

I have some of my armour builds under old clear plastic plant propagators. Works well for them but sadly most of my aircraft builds are exposed to dust.
Hi from stoke ,great video peter and some beautifully done models ,im an absolute beginner in model making having inherited my late brother in laws set up and stash of which he sadly didnt get to start ,of the 50 ish models he had i think i want to try the willy jeep it looks very nice on the videos I've seen on it when complete, can i ask where would i buy the dio mats to stand it on ?
👍👍
Peter, are you OCD like me and have to keep the box and all docs/manual etc for every kit ? I need another room just for the boxes. Hah !
@@paulthurston2883 Yep! 😆
If I were to do it again, I would take all the money I spent on my modelling and spend it on scuba diving equipment and scuba diving trips and camera gear for scuba diving. I blame my dad for becoming a modeller/hoarder....
I try and give away my models after I run out of room. I always have a tough time giving them away. Most people don't want them.
I only do 1/72 you can display more of them if you don't have much room and the wife won't let me display them in the living room 😮
Love the cabinet but here in Japan it would take up half the space of each and every room. ☹
Did you ever build the Bentley in British Racing Green Peter
@@MichaelCampin No, never had a Bentley
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab it was a great kit but a tad complicated
We might have to agree to disagree on this one occasion. 😢
Fare enough Peter, I’m still a faithful subscriber…👍
We would end up with untold stands which we would not use and the price of kits would go up
@@brucejackman3446 They are doing that already!
Its bad enough that airfix says you must buy the stands separately, but these are the old stands. They dont fit any airfix kit produced in the last 15 years.
Exactly
BLÅLIDEN IKea for the Saturn V
that's what I use
I just dont understand why they (airfix) dont release the style of POSEABLE stand that come with the dogfight doubles sets but as single model stands....it would cost them NOTHING as they DO have the tooling and DO include them with the df doubles
@@Damien-q8t Yes...I am going to raise that with them at Telford.
Ooof! Seems a bit wasteful? Could you not donate them or sell them? 👍🏻
