It's lovely to see someone as knowledgable as Iain, who has worked on top-end cars (such as the Miura, etc.) be so enthusiastic about what was a 'cooking' hot-hatch (205 GTI 1.9).
I can see the auction price going up in front of my eyes for the cars chosen. Lucky thing being a Tyrrell's special personal pick. If I was the owner I'd be dancing on the ceiling Lionel style.
The 635 for me….i love these….my dad had one for a while but with 3rd Child turning up unexpectedly he traded it for a Volvo estate of the time. We all never forgave our younger brother for that!
Love thee 635 csi - I had a new one in Henna red - manual box - first was left and down - absolute weapon in its day - I sold it after putting 50k miles on it - sold it to a guy in Rotherham - a year later I bought it back from him as the arrival of a baby made him need a 4 door- I ran it again for 6 months then sold it to a friend in Australia who converted it to a racing car - I believe it won Bathurst 500.
I'm gonna say it: I preferred this auction walkaround over Harry's. Harry's are just a little rushed and hectic in my opinion. But both are great and enjoyed either way 😉🙏
Of course they're rushed and hectic, he covers 4 times as many cars and bullet-points them, he doesn't start rambling. Both enjoyable on their own terms.
So refreshing to have an expert who has worked inside the automotive industry for decades and to boot has excellent communication skills and oozes integrity.. Just about everything that the likes of Jeremy Clarkson isn't. Some real corkers in there and I loved the reference to RPJ and the Ford Focus RS. I had an ST and that was quick enough.. 😮
Loved this auction preview, Iain, and especially your words on the e24/635csi. Few cars beat e24 chassis BMW for their immense value: thrilling performance, supreme comfort, iconic design, and easy to maintain (though you're correct finding a rust-free example is key!). I've been hoping an M635csi makes it into your workshop, would love to see a well-sorted one taken for a drive. Thanks so much this channel and the work you and your team do in bringing it to the world!
This is why I enjoy following Iain: he isn't a high-end or exotic car snob. He can get as excited over a 30 year old Peugeot puddle jumper as a Miura. If it's well designed and built, fun to drive - that's all it takes to gain his approval.
Re the 205GTI fan being on constantly , it's the same with Porsche 924s and early 944s. I read years ago this was to prevent the possibility of CO poisoning. Later , when catalytic converters were installed in most cars, this became less of an issue.
Thanks for highlighting the Lexus ,they are silky smooth to drive . If garaged they last decades , I’ve had one for 9 years and only done services , tyres and a battery
That Vetroresina looks lovely. I saw one for the first time earlier this year at a local classic show, a rare and beautiful thing. By the by, thank you for an excellent and unexpected video Iain.
I used to work for BMW in 1980/1 and I drove the 635CSi when it first came up for sale. That car was great fun to drive but the 633i I had as a company car was lighter and much more fun to drive. The 635i was big and bulky and it told in their handling.
Skip brown was a legend, he prepared rally cars. The 1.9S was the road car…8v with a wilder cam. Not heard the fan story before…..My 205GTI fan isn’t always on and I’ve had it 22 years!
Really great to watch Iain presenting all the information, maybe for the winter months a trip round car museums, picking out exceptional in his opinion cars,
My father had a BMW 635 and all I remember was was the leather seats were very slipp and when cornering ate high speed you could not stay in place. The rear window motors both failed due to low use and the exhaust system was very expensive. Other than that I loved it.
Hey Iain, have you ever got commissioned to do a pre purchase inspection? I'm curious to see what points and how your opinions on a used high end classic car is, I wonder if you can make a video in that nature 😁 Love this new auction content, lots of knowledge and it's entertaining to listen to!
Thank you so much for this Saturday surprise Iain. Well, isn't that a coincidence as we are on to a 635 CSi actually, preferably made in 1987, '88 or '89, and in mint condition. The search is on. Many are on sale in Germany but one has to be careful of course that it comes with a full history and fully restored as it would have left the factory; no hidden or concealed issues. The've gone up in value considerably in such condition but they are still very much doable, not costing the earth. Thank you again Iain.
The heater blower fan that runs continuously may be the same reason GM did it back in the 70's, it helped pressurize the cabin to reduce wind noise at speed.
Love this new style of video Iain! It’s nice hearing from somebody who actually works on these cars day in and day out. I wish we got the 205gti in the USA. We did get the 405Mi16 but they’re rare to find.
Some interesting choices among your favorites at this auction. That Champagne Gold color on the Lexus SC430 seemed to have been the most popular, but it truly suits it. I remember visiting a place called Grapevine in Texas in 2006, and I saw loads of these parked outside a high-end venue, rather than their German counterparts.
The Maserati is gorgeous! The best thing about it is no one expects this package in a business limo - front-mid engined V8, dry sump, transaxle. And the only thing that may cause gearbox and clutch problems is quick starts off the line. Treat it as you would a manual - you don't want to floor the gas and drop the clutch in a 2.5 ton car, you'll burn the clutch to cinders. Start smooth, shift with paddles and the clutch will last up to 50k miles.
You‘ve got my voice Iain. Pretty much agree with every picked car of your choice. I used to have a 635 CSi, fancied the 205 GTi, looked for Quattroporte‘s over the year and even have a soft spot for the Lexus SC430 regardless many opinions about it not being a sportcar (which it never tried)
I used to teach English to a test driver from Honda. I was surprised when he pulled up in his Lexus SC430. (I had a 1.9gti with Mi16 engine, and my mum had a 635csi, so I'm pretty chuffed that they get your seal of approval!).
I've a question Iain (if u ever see this) Why does everyone always say it was VW who developed the first "hot hatch"? It wasn't. It was Alfa Romeo with the Alfa Sud ti which was launched a full 3 years before the Golf GTI. The rest came way later. Just something to note perhaps 😊
Mr Tyrrell, please more auction walks . Please more auction walks . Please more auction walks . You and Harry got this market sown up! Great video. Thank you!
SC430 is a massively underrated car. A better buy than a comparably aged Mercedes SL in terms of reliability and refinement (though definitely not in looks!) But it's a Lexus, all you need to do is service it regularly and it will last until the heat death of the universe.
Well, that was quite a change from the usual high quality video you always provide. Very enjoyable. I tend to agree with you on some of the Ford high performance vehicles trending upwards. That Focus RS looks gorgeous. The Lexus is insanely beautiful.
Nice to see something different this time. I admire the BMW 635, also have a sweet spot for the Peugeot 205 GTI. Thanks for all your comments, a balanced choice. Maserati 4 portes beautiful but a risky maintenance! Thank you for this video, Instagram alerted me! Nice surprise.🤩
I could be mistaken but I think we got the Renault 5 here in the US - but they called it "Le Car'. I never owned one. I don't think they sold very well.
I’m surprised you like the Maserati! One of my dream cars, and that’s the perfect colour scheme. I’m sure the flappy paddles, mean it has a manual gearbox, but a robotised change. So I’m sure money no object a manual could be created
I believe there were GM cars that ran the fan all the time, flow through ventilation. Without doing a ton of research I believe it was late 60s through sometime in the 70s.
205 GTI is a gem, especially with those Speedline rims. 308 is also great, could we get a review of the 288 GTO, really great Leonardo Fioravanti Ferrari. M635 CSI was one of my favourites. A bit expensive tyres with the TRX's.
Friend i knew back in the early 90's had a Skip Brown 1.9GTI - one of the best handling cars I ever had the pleasure of being in - plus the bodykit made it a real head turner. Been looking for one for years but have never seen one for sale - shame!
Great reviews and nobody need worry about more in future, as the results of so many auctions are clearly showing so many values are still falling sharply, so they need all the publicity they can get, yet still typically up to 50% of cars don't meet reserve at this time.
True, it looks great otherwise. I would say the 635 csi is my favorite BMW of all time. Even though I love the 850csi too, the 635 just looks perfect and has that wonderful engine. To me BMW from the 70’s to the early 2000’s represents everything right about BMW more so than than any of the terrible looking and overweight sedans and SUV’s today. I’m not even against SUV’s as I still think the first generation X5 looks good to this day
Great picks, Iain, although I disagree with the Maser. Never saw what the fuss was about re. its styling. But each to their own. Good to see the Pantera you prepped!
Iain, this was an interesting departure from your usual videos, though as an owner-driver of Mercedes-Benzes for 26 years I would have included a classic M-B, but that's just me. ;)

Ian, very much agree that some four door cars can be very attractive and interesting. You mentioned Facel Vega as an example, have you ever worked on one or could this be something you could review?
@iain_tyrrell funny story in Indianapolis about 1985 and 86 was a 1963 Facel II for sale at a big antique car and parts event for $5,000 that they couldn't sell for two years. The seller saw me (18 years old) the second year, remembered me and suggested that he could do better on the price. It wasn't rusty but a little faded and scratched up, worn but ok interior, and drivable as is. First one I had ever seen and thought it was very interesting. At that time they weren't really considered desirable and it was a more than I could afford. Bought a 67 w108 250S for about half that instead.

The constant running fan was all Peugeots of that era, not just the 205. The idea ran until a/c became standard. My dealer at the time said it was to stop the cabin air getting stale, I thought that was what windows are for.
Thanks Iain - great content! As an aside bit of info - the early Ferrari 308GTBs single exhaust would eventually cause burn a hole a cause a fire in the trunk. I have seen this back in the day, to a well known artist, who had one! Hence the change to the sport exhaust system...
A special sort of workshop - great idea Iain. Great fun watching your footage - even though I will not have a chance to participate in the auction since I am German (which in fact may be the least reason 😅)
Tell me, what is the car to your left while you were talking about the Lexus? Looks like a 1963 Dodge Dart from the quick glance we get. I'll take that one if that's what it is!!!! Thanks for the Video!
Great departure from the workshop, good to see the focus on affordable cars, plus a couple of pricey stunners. Cheers.
The Peugeot 205GTI would have to be the nicest looking hot hatch ever. The proportions are simple but just so right.
Pininfarina designed, just like the 308 GTB, and it shows 👍
@@SebastianX1.9 Pininfarina only styled the Cabriolet
Pretty much yes, Pininfarina. I have soft spot for Alfa Romeo 33 1,5 quadrifoglio verde. Brilliant car!
