What a car. This front is looking so much better than the later DB5-style, where the headlights always seem to be placed too low. And the sound of a big IL6 is just the best. Thank you so much for showing this. Wonderful.
just for info the Miura in the background is one of my favourite supercars. I saw a lime green one with all the trim in matt black outside a garage in Mansfield. I spent ages just looking at it, I believe it was the then boyfriend of Twiggy the model, maybe someone can confirm it, it was around 1966, one of the first.
My personal favourite. My Grandmother was the house keeper at Sir Davids residence Durker Rood House, Meltham Huddersfield throughout the 1950's and 60's. Occasionally Sir David would either collect or drop her back home in his personal DB4. As a child we would stay in the house while they were away for long periods, the outbuildings and garages housed Astons of course. Great memories.
wow....i would pop up there in late 80's/early 90's, and my girlfriend at the time lived in a small block of terraces just below durkar roods on the little one way street. I lived in Brockholes at the time. First DB i saw was a DB2/4 in Leeds in a multistorey car park, second was a DBS from 71, a J reg parked up in Holmfirth approx 1990.
@@paulwhite2533 I was still in Meltham in those times Paul, now in Matlock, might I know your girlfriend at the time ? I have relatives in Brockholes to this day...
I can't believe that you didn't take the opportunity for a pun to be used at 16:30 to say something like "I guess you expect me to keep on talking? No Mr Tyrrell, I expect you to Drive" 😉🤣
Brilliant, just brilliant. Iain, why you don’t have 2-3 million subscribers, I don’t understand. Maybe it’s just a matter of time. 🤷♂️ The UK’s very own Jay Leno, with a first hand technical difference.
It’s great to see a DB4 getting some love, I’ve always thought they were a special car and look fabulous even under the shadow of the DB5. It’s even better to see a car with a back story like this, to a car person they evoke memories that nothing else, except for perhaps music, can do. Thanks for another wonderful video Iain, and good to see Pete included in this one. It’s great to meet the people at Tyrrell’s Classic Workshop and see their particular skills and what that brings to the business.
That paint color absolutely flatters the shape and lines of this car perfectly! Looked so wrong for this Aston painted in British racing green- because it absorbs too much light, no reflection.

My uncle drove me to school in a Mini Mk1 in 1970 (in Germany). Guess what's in my garage... when I heard that his uncle took him to school in that car, I got a little emotional and could totally understand the man. Even in the Mini you felt like a king, not to mention the driving characteristics... How that Aston nephew must have felt... absolutely amazing!!!

What a piece of art this car is! I don't know what is most exciting, the filigrane engine, the rich seat leather, the clocks on the dash, the hand crafted bodywork or the absolutely stunning blue body paint. Thank you and your team for bringing these absolutely stunning cars back to their original glory as they so much deserve.
What a stunningly beautiful car with a great story going back to its owner. When you look at modern cars and see this, you do wonder where it’s all going wrong. As much as I love modern cars, nothing compares to the beauty of this.

Sir, you are the prototype of a well mannered educated distinguished gentleman. It gives pleasure and joy to listen to your and learn from your knowledge thank you so much. Btw, beautiful car and restoration
The pale blue paint is gorgeous and really does the car. So many are silver for rather predicable reasons and silver does look good, but this suits the car even better. That six sounds absolutely glorious; a deep note hinting at the power within, yet cultured. A bit like 007 in his tux you might say! Thanks for another wonderful look at a very special car Iain.
This video must be pinned to the channel front page Iain. It has to be one of, if not the best of your efforts so far. Perfect proportions of information, nerdiness, education and humour. All this revolving around a stunning looking car with an impressive back story. Top marks!
The very first Aston Martin I saw as a schoolboy in the 1960's was a pale metalic blue DB4, very similar to the car in this video, only it was a convertable. Up to that point the only sports cars I knew were Healeys, MGs and Triumphs. It was like something from a different planet - the most beautiful car I had ever seen. I still think the DB4 with the unfaired-in headlights is the best looking road car Aston Martin ever made.

I so loved seeing the car on our driveway, let alone hearing it as it took off after his lesson. A good friend of mine in his early days as a GP, he had a DB4 convertible. What a wonderful story behind it. Thank you again. Always learning something new on your videos. From the details with the different headlight setups, to the changes in the engine to "make it go", to the explanation from you, with a little help from Pete, about alternators versus dynamos. Incidentally, I'm with you that that blue is a much more beautiful colour on that car than the green.
That color is stunning. I’ve nothing against BRG as my Triumph TR6 is in that color, but an Aston to me should be understated elegance. That shade nails it!

Among the many things I admire about this channel (and I've been a subscriber for years now) remains the way in which Iain (exemplifying the habits of many of his countrymen) treats a cyclist not as an obstacle as much as an opportunity to further explore the dynamics of whatever car he's operating. Here, at 23 mins 20 sec, he has to slow to 15-20 mph due to a pair of cyclists and then wait behind them for second after second after second until the road ahead is clear and he can enjoy letting that powerplant once again do its thing. My fellow Americans, you have a lot to learn in this regard.
Having been a cyclist many years ago, I despair at the attitude of SOME cyclists, because I am often a pedestrian? But when they are merely doing what they should, I have all the time in the world for them. Thank you! I feel extremely privileged to have gone on a spin with you in a David Brown DB 4/5 classic. The shifting appeared to be as smooth as an automatic. Simply articulate shifting. I remember when I took Ballette how coordinated my double clutching became, and I virtually taught myself the art having taken beginning ballet. The vehicle I drove was my father's B.M.W. factory ordered 2002TII of 1974. I was now shifting In my opinion, as the factory might have intended. So your spin in the Aston has brought back all too brief, happy memories. Your driving is par excellant! Thank you for this charming treat! Thank you for your toil in this remarkable growling sports cat. I think I may be becoming partial to British sports cars. Thank you Sir!😅
Fascinating. You tell the story in a way that I am enthralled and an open sponge. This story of this car could have been lost in a sea. Thank you Tyrrell. One of your gifts is teaching.
Iain, just wonderful. I fully agree the comment below on the front end: I like these nose with the exposed headlights far more than the DB5-style hidden lights. And plenty of nerdiness and humor! Please go on! Greetings from Holland!😍👍🙋🏼♂
Great story, what a baller of an Uncle in the day doing the school run in a DB4. Glad the car was restored right and Car is in safe hands and cherished. Oh and Aston - best product placement ever…..😁👍 Simple work of Art that travels and great it gets shown and used. So much eye candy my eyes almost exploded. All of the most beautiful cars ever created under one roof on any given day! That lime Green Miura SV just outshining that perfect jewel of an Aston! I wonder if you guys ever get overcome by it all, and break out into the vapours? Holy moly...
Lovely Aston, remind me of a car a family friendly who was a basically one man restoration and collision repair shop. He'd pick up some collision and light work while a long term restoration or 2 was in his care as space/time allowed. One car that was in with my Corvette was a DB5 or DB6 which had spent considerable time under a oak tree with acorns falling on it. Someone was paying handsomely to form the aluminum back into shape. Quite a rare car especially in the Southern USA. He also had a real Cheetah. and a BMW 3.0 CSL race car come through the shop when I popped in.
What a beautiful car - and such a well presented video. Thank you!

Lovely car in a lovely colour. The shape and proportions of this car are just about perfect. Touring of Milan produced an exceptional design. Your engineering updates are sympathetic and appropriate.
Excellent photographic restoration history on the metalwork. It’s important that you discussed the Alternator vs dynamo comparison. I love any car in green but I’m glad you returned it to its original hue. For me, one of the most attractive things about a vintage Aston is that gorgeous binnacle and instrument panel. When everyone else in the UK were using wood veneers, Aston were doing it in leather- very decadent! Being a Jaguar man I would be interested to know how the two straight sixes stack against each other. I know that the Aston unit produced a lot of more horsepower.
This just solved a mystery for me. There was a close up in one scene of the Bond movie that showed the gearknob as 4 speed yet the DB5 was a 5 speed. Puzzled me for years until you explained the movie car was a DB4 👍🏻
@@martinhitchman4101 The first car used in the film was not just a DB4 Series 5 made to look like a DB5 it was actually a DB5 prototype. Exactly it was a DB4 Vantage Series 5 born as an experimental design prototype/development car and modified into the the DB5 prototype with chassis number DP/216/1. It was the 1963 London Earls Court DB5 Motor Show car and shown in Autocar in 1963 as a DB5. This was a special car, and not just a DB4 made to look like a DB5 like in the case of DBS used in The Persuaders made to only cosmetically look like a DBS V8. A second back up car was used for filming which was actually a DB5 with chassis number DB5/1486/R. This car did have a 5 speed ZF gearbox. There were subsequently 2 further DB5s used for promotional purposes, not used in filming, which were chassis numbers DB5/2008/R and DB5/2017/R.
Looks stunning in that color. Sort of reminds me of Jay Leno's 1962 Maserati 3500 GTi, which has a similar metallic light blue color. Beautiful car too.
Glad to see your dressing-up box was in use again, Iain. Your DJ definitely wins over your Wolf Barnato look with the blower! DB4 always leave me stirred, not shaken. I sold mine in 1985 for just £7000 as a non-runner. I must have been mad!
Very good looking car. Did notice the stance seems to have been slightly modernised with wider tyres and/or slightly widened track, pretty sure the wheels would have been well inside the wings originally.
What an incredible story I’m sure my friends dad had a db5 in that colour back in the 80 s This would be one of my most favourite videos because it is about our own tractor maker who decided to have a go at making cars
Just beautiful. I have owned several cars over the years i.e. Z3 M Roadster, a gorgeous 356 Speedster by Chesil which I bought in Edinburgh after a couple of pints on a whim as one should, a supremely elegant and smooth low mileage CL 600 (2001) in the same shade of Caribbean blue as this Aston ("Chalcedony Blue" in Mercedes terminology), a "billionaire's M5" 2006 SWB 760i Individual (which looked the part and which I loved) etc. but the car I am hoping to send in around 2 years or so to Tyrrell's for a concours restoration (if they are interested of course) is my dark green over tan 1998 Saab 9-5 Griffin because rather inexplicably and in the words of James May when talking about his 458 Speciale it gives me a fizzing sensation. I hope they are at the top of their game as far as 1990s plastic is concerned...
Merci pour cette présentation et pour avoir évoqué l’histoire de ce magnifique exemplaire. On a tous vécu de belles histoires avec nos voitures. Bravo et merci encore pour vos partages!
Nice to hear you mention your experience in Franchoek, South Africa. I'm local, and visited the museum with my friends in the humble MX-5 club just a couple of days ago. Such a special place! The Aston is glorious. Highly recommended for anyone. And the museum is surrounded by our best wine farms.
Amazing. You are either a petrol head or you are not. I had a good friend about 30 years ago, and when I talked about a real 'drivers' car, in relation to any car, he scoffed. Meanwhile, despite his relative good fortune, he drove a Ford Focus, thus proving that to him cars meant as much as a ham sandwich. Being born in 1963, I would love an Aston of the era, but space and other practical considerations mean I have to get my kicks by watching video's like this. Thanks Mr Tyrrell for the channel.
Mr. Tyrell, you are a noble man and at the same time, you and your team are artists, just like those who created art. You, sir, with your knowledge, patience, and manners, help preserve old and proven values, add some new ones, and pass them all on to those who come.
Great car and thank you Iain. I can't help but notice that the roads that you regularly drive for the tests have deteriorated over recent years. I appreciate that you don't have any control or influence over the state of the council's roads.
Lovely historical and engineering tour of this gorgeous car. As a lifelong James Bond Fan, Aston Martin was always on my mind though in this lifetime I ll never be able to afford one (except for the many scale models I own!). Thank you Iain.
Wonderful story and beautiful color for this remarkable vehicle. Sincere thanks for making the time to share these gems with us. Your dedication to excellence is inspiring.
You excelled in your James Bond sketch. Gave me a good laugh. Saw a maroon DBS in a restaurant car park in Dumfries today. It looked like it was an early one with the in line 6 cylinder by Tadek Marek
I prefer the DB4 to the DB5,has a cleaner look. By the way Ian, you forgot to mention the Italian Job starring role for this car. Charlie Crocker's personal car of choice, after he came back from shooting tigers !
If memory serves me the Plymouth Valiant here in the US was the first car to have an alternator. When watching old 007 movies the Aston Martin was the star of the show in my young mind. This particular DB4/5 is so unique and stunning.
What a beautiful car. I did not know about the JB DB4 connection. Great video - I love learning more about wonderful cars by watching your videos each week. Keep it up! Peter
What a great video about such a lovely, elegant car with a bit of humor thrown in for good measure. Such a wonderful sounding motor-you can feel the torque. Thanks for sharing.
Oh Iain, so glad you have posted this, my father had a DB4 convertible back in the day, was only a couple of years old, he told me all sorts of stories over the years. He owned it before my time which is a shame. One story was of how he drove from Bristol to London in the evening for a coffee just for the drive haha oh and to take his new date for a spin haha….. DB4’s have to be my favourite……. thanks 👍 The non faired in lights were sooo much prettier…. perfect
So gorgeous and so much history with this car. The restoration work is most meticulous and exact. I prefer this headlights. When he tossed the PPK over the shoulder, I for the moment feared it might land on the Rolls Royce behind. I once handled a PPK and what a terrible gun it is.
A beautiful DB4 and I love the colour. I also much prefer the open headlights to the cowled ones on the MkV and DB5. Out of interest, there was at least one DB5 that was made with the DB4-style open headlights; there was a DB5 called "Quicksilver" (this was done as a badge in the style of the Superleggera badges) that was actually BRG with an Oxblood red leather interior and was specifically ordered with the DB4 style lights. It looked stunning and I had some memorable drives in that car back in the early '90s, particularly across France.
I love the story behind it, thank you for sharing this rather lovely insight. Also a big thank you for the interesting historical lesson on DB 4/5, really fascinating.
You expect me to laugh Mr Tyrrell ... i did! All credit for putting the tux on but also loved the interplay re dynamo and the respect you showed your colleague... your obviously the boss and have massive experience yet showed great respect.......
Lol Fantastic vid as usual and I love the Bond tribute interlude ... absolutely brilliant I so look forward to my Sunday Tyrrell specials thank you so much sir ... absolutely bang on, and Miss Money Penny just got me a beverage shaking not stirred ❤
I do agree about L de N electric overdrive. My Dad's T2000s had one in 1964 and 1971 and my MGB GT in 1974. Said gearboxes changed with the advent of transverse engines and FWD.
I have a liking for the Laycock de Normanville overdrive, however it was jettisoned by manufacturers in favour of the 5 speed gearbox because the said 5-speed was cheaper, more reliable and a more compact solution. In Australia, the 5-speed was introduced in the early 1980s - on cars that were of the rear wheel drive type - ie. not FWD.
'Take it easy , Mr. Bond' ...that lovely drive in the country reminds when it led to 'Shrublands' for the cure to too much heavy living, bacon and eggs and too much coffee.....not to mention the martinis ! You've done it again Iain, time travelling!
Looks and sounds special 🎉 and, being born in the same year, it looks far better for 60+ than I do 😊 The engine sounds sweeter and smoother than many others….. a testament to your ears and I guessed the overdrive before you referred to it, as you made a super slick change earlier in the filming. Having spent many enjoyable blasts in a friend’s GT6, I used to love the overdrive box……. Fine work, not jealous……… much 🙂🇬🇧
What classics you show us mate, you have the best. As an Aussie, may I say that no one makes a straight six sound like the Poms do. The Aston Martin and the old Jags are music to the ear.
What a car. This front is looking so much better than the later DB5-style, where the headlights always seem to be placed too low. And the sound of a big IL6 is just the best. Thank you so much for showing this. Wonderful.
Thank you for watching!
I totally agree Robert, timeless elegance - and sound in spades and over 60 years old .
Same colour as my Dad's old DB5 DUB714C when we lived in Rickmansworth early 70s. Thanks !

So much eye candy my eyes almost exploded. All of the most beautiful cars ever created under one roof on any given day! That lime Green Miura SV just outshining that perfect jewel of an Aston! I wonder if you guys ever get overcome by it all, and break out into the vapours? Holy moly...
Perfect opportunity to break out the white tux. Nicely played. And what a classic beauty.
The perfect specification, with the later (shallower) bonnet scoop but before the DB5esque headlights. The owner is a very lucky man.
When the Walter PPK was thrown it was a perfect opportunity for it to go off and have a cat screech..
love that colour..
I love British racing green, but that blue is epic
Early DB5s were also 4 speed.
@@stevenrobertson4190 I didn’t know that - thanks
@@stevenrobertson4190 It also featured in “The Saint” episode “The Noble Sportsman” in 1964,driven by Anthony Quayle.
Looks stunning in that color. Sort of reminds me of Jay Leno's 1962 Maserati 3500 GTi, which has a similar metallic light blue color. Beautiful car too.
I'm a big Bond fan so the Tux, Martini and PPK where a very nice touch. That blue surely compliments the car.
I really appreciate your sense of humor. And the presentation of the cars is quite enjoyable.
Yes, the wheels are wider than standard
What an incredible story
I’m sure my friends dad had a db5 in that colour back in the 80 s
This would be one of my most favourite videos because it is about our own tractor maker who decided to have a go at making cars
The combination of your love of these machines and your deep mechanical expertise -- there's nothing like it. "Show Mr. Tyrrell to his room."
I would be fascinated to hear about the differences/similarities between The AM engine and the Jaguar engine.
There’s a video there….
One of the most beautiful cars ever made 👌👍🍺
Merci pour cette présentation et pour avoir évoqué l’histoire de ce magnifique exemplaire.
I love the body lines around the headlight, where the bonnet and mudguards dip down into a hollow.
Another fascinating video, Ian! After sitting through the whole thing, I was shaken... but not stirred.
Wonderful story and beautiful color for this remarkable vehicle. Sincere thanks for making the time to share these gems with us. Your dedication to excellence is inspiring.
Love the geky tech the history and the humor! Thanks a lot Ian!
Timeless design, always had a soft spot for this era of Aston Martins. That in-line six sounds superb.
You excelled in your James Bond sketch. Gave me a good laugh. Saw a maroon DBS in a restaurant car park in Dumfries today. It looked like it was an early one with the in line 6 cylinder by Tadek Marek
As always a joy, especially the great stories that come with cars. Got a kick out of your comedy as well. Thanks
I prefer the DB4 to the DB5,has a cleaner look.
By the way Ian, you forgot to mention the Italian Job starring role for this car.
Charlie Crocker's personal car of choice, after he came back from shooting tigers !
Fabulous car - the sound! 😍 I love the F40 and Miura just hanging around in the background while you’re discussing the dynamo 😁
Love the background scenery...Did he just throw a PPK onto a concrete floor?
DB4’s have to be my favourite……. thanks 👍 The non faired in lights were sooo much prettier…. perfect
I worked at Newport Pagnell for 10 years (1989-1999 Virage-Vantage LM) but the DB4 is my Aston of choice, such a beautiful car
So gorgeous and so much history with this car. The restoration work is most meticulous and exact. I prefer this headlights.
When he tossed the PPK over the shoulder, I for the moment feared it might land on the Rolls Royce behind. I once handled a PPK and what a terrible gun it is.
Lovely story, lovely workmanship, lovely Gentleman driver, lovely presented!
Iain, really enjoying these legacy customer cars and their uniqueness and stories.
16:21 Throwing that gun looked like a close call with the Rolls Royce behind 🤣 Great video as always 👌🏾
Not nearly as close as it looked!
Not gonna lie, that is one beautiful DB4!
Also, the story behind the car is very fascinating. Keep up the great work, sir!^^
Thank you! Glad you like it!
@@iain_tyrrell You're welcome, sir.^^
Thanks
Thank you!🙏
Lol Fantastic vid as usual and I love the Bond tribute interlude ... absolutely brilliant I so look forward to my Sunday Tyrrell specials thank you so much sir ... absolutely bang on, and Miss Money Penny just got me a beverage shaking not stirred ❤
I thought Daniel Craig had given up the role but here he is on You Tube back in character.
Stunning as always! Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work😊
What a colour! Stunning. Surprised we haven't seen that on other makes.
In Australia, the 5-speed was introduced in the early 1980s - on cars that were of the rear wheel drive type - ie. not FWD.
Such a beautiful car in an unbelievable colour. I cant believe it was changed to BRG at one point. Fabulous video as always.
The view of the car following the camera car shows how perfect this car looks .
'Take it easy , Mr. Bond' ...that lovely drive in the country reminds when it led to 'Shrublands' for the cure to too much heavy living, bacon and eggs and too much coffee.....not to mention the martinis ! You've done it again Iain, time travelling!
“I prefer not to drive it on its door handles”. Proceeds to drive it on its door handles. Resistance is futile. Bravo sir!
Looks and sounds special 🎉 and, being born in the same year, it looks far better for 60+ than I do 😊
The engine sounds sweeter and smoother than many others….. a testament to your ears and I guessed the overdrive before you referred to it, as you made a super slick change earlier in the filming.
